The Punisher and Jessica Jones have been canceled by streaming giant Netflix. And this means that Marvel has no TV shows left anymore on Netflix. All of them, including Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Daredevil and now Jessica Jones and The Punisher have been canceled.
The Netflix statement
Netflix issued a statement via Variety and had the following to say:
“The Punisher” has been canceled after its second season, and the upcoming third season of “Jessica Jones” will be its last, Netflix confirmed on Monday. The announcement comes after Netflix gave the ax to its other Marvel series: “Daredevil,” “Iron First,” and “Luke Cage.”
“Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’ will not return for a third season on Netflix,” Netflix said in a statement. “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come. In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones.’ We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others. We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”
So did I! I am one of the fans they are talking about. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Marvel’s Netflix. From Daredevil to the less popular Iron Fist.
I remember watching the big announcement back then when Marvel announced The Defenders. I found it a big moment in television history. First it was the movies moving towards Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and then they pull the same stuff on TV.
Jeph Loeb’s statement
For those who don’t know Jeph Loeb, he is the head of Marvel Television. So kind of like Kevin Feige but then for TV. He was a comicbook writer for years as well and he certainly created some classics such as, but not limited to: Batman: Hush, Spiderman: Blue and Daredevil: Yellow. But he also jumped the shark a few times like Wolverine surviving an atom bomb.
Loeb issued a statement today that was not just a statement but more a loveletter to the fans. And Jeph promises us more Marvel on TV real soon.
It had never been done before.
Four separate television series, each with different super-talented showrunners, writers, directors, cast and crew, coming out months apart and then…
…they would meet in a single event series all set in the heart of New York City.
We called them The Defenders.
And together we were thrilled by stories of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and even the Punisher joined in!
They said it couldn’t be done.
But Marvel assembled amazing teams to write, produce, direct, edit, and score 13 seasons and 161 one-hour episodes.
Take a moment and go online and look at the dazzling list of actors, writers, directors, and musicians who graced us with the very best of their craft.
We loved each and every minute of it.
And we did it all for you — the fans — who cheered for us around the world and made all the hard work worth it.
So, Thank You!
On behalf of everyone at Marvel Television, we couldn’t be more proud or more grateful to our audience.
Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that.
As Matthew Murdock’s Dad once said, “The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it’s how he gets back up.”
To be continued…!

In conclusion
While I am saddened by the cancellations of all of Marvel on Netflix. And at least three of them were critically acclaimed and financially more than viable, I do think that Marvel is moving on to bigger and better things. Such as the Loki TV show with Tom Hiddleston and Bucky & Falcon with Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie and what to think of Scarlett Witch & Vision with Paul Bethany and Elizabeth Olsen. I think Marvel will set the bar even higher with their upcoming streamingservice Disney+.
