How to Find and Defeat Titans in ANTHEM

ANTHEM: Where to find Titans and how to defeat them

Vulkk by Vulkk|

BioWare’s looter-shooter Anthem offers various challenges. The giant Titans in Freeplay as well as in some of the main missions, are among the most challenging opponents. Killing a Titan is not easy or quick, but the rewards are worth it, especially on high difficulty. They do have a weak spot that you can exploit. Knowing where to find a Titan and how to approach the fight, will allow you to kill these giants even solo. You also need them for Corium when crafting The Shield of Dawn.

There are different types of Titans. Some are easier to defeat, while others take a lot longer and require more careful approach. In the video I am showing you a smaller Titan, part of a World Event, completed solo in Hard Mode with a lvl 23 Ranger. The images below show a Ruin Titan (spawns Ash Elementals), which is a world boss type of titan and is a lot stronger. The mechanics and attacks they use are the same, though.

HOW TO DEFEAT TITANS IN ANTHEM

The Titan has a few special types of attacks. They are all very deadly and if you are not careful, your long and hard efforts could end in a disaster in a matter of seconds. Below I have each one of the attacks described along with tips of how to avoid them.

Spawning Adds

Anthem Titans How-to Guide - Spawning Adds

The adds that titans call frequently have the habbit of rushing towards you and your teammates, exploding when they get close or take too much damage. Kill them off or simply take the damage when you can afford to do it. It’s best to clear them all as soon as they spawn.

Defeating them away from the Titan would allow you to easily pick up the health and ammo drops when you need  them.

The adds could be of a different type. In the image above you see Ash Elementals, but they could also be Scorpions, for example. They always rush towards you and explode if/when they reach you.

Fire Rings Channeled Attack

Anthem Titans How-to Guide - Fire Rings

When the Titan leans forward and touches the ground with its hand, you should expect one of the most annoying and dangerous attacks – the fire rings. Several rings of fire will spawn at the Titan’s spot one after another and begin expanding in a wide circular shape until they disappear.

The rings can move on the ground or on what I would call “second floor”. To avoid them, I suggest fly high and just wait them out. If you want to speed things up, you can also jump over the ground rings and either fly above the “second floor” ones or go under them. When things get hot, however, it is not always possible for you to avoid getting hit.

On a smaller titans, part of a world event or mission, this attack can be weaker in the sense that the rings may only spawn and expand on the ground, not on the “second floor” (in the air).

Catching fire will put your engines on cooldown, not allowing you to fly for a short period of time. This makes the next few seconds of  the fight even more complicated, so always do your best to avoid catching fire.

The Storm Javelin lass has a huge advantage in this fight over the other exosuits, because of its ability to hover for a much longer period of time. If you are struggling to kill a Titan for a mission or achievement and you have the Storm exosuit, just put it on and go to Freeplay or the specific mission. Even if your main suit is better geared, the hover mechanic of the Storm will give you unfair advantage.

Energy Sphere Attacks

Anthem Titans How-to Guide - Energy Sphere

The Titan can either spawn an energy sphere on your current position (can be on the ground or in the air) or form one above its own head and throw it your way. In both cases they hit hard if you don’t avoid them.

To avoid the stationary energy sphere, all you have to do is move slightly and/or dodge. It doesn’t have a very large radius. The one the Titan throws at you is tougher. Wait for it to come close and then dodge or run away from your spot. This one tends to follow you some times (seems to depend on difficulty and whether the Titan is in Freeplay or part of a mission).

Energy Beam

The Energy Beam attack is one of the most deadliest of all in the Titan’s arsenal. Whenever you see him bend forward and start “extracrting energy from the earth”, he’s preparing for this attack. Look for cover to break line of sight (LOS) or dodge and strafe quickly. The attack is very powerful, but the Titan is slow and wont keep turning to chase you if you keep dodging to one side. Pretty much any large object can break LoS.

Titan’s Weak Spot

Anthem Titans How-to Guide - Weak Spots

Despite its size, Titans have a weak spot, just like any other creature you fight in Anthem’s wild and deadly world. In the case of Titans, their weak spots are a bit trickier. They only appear when the Titan is attacking. If you are fighting it solo, this could be a great challenge and certainly will be time-consuming.

Most of the Titan’s attacks are slow and/or have a precast and/or channel attached to them. As soon as you see him starting an attack sequence, notice how his back, chest and hands start glowing. This is the moment to hit him hard. Aim for these exact spots to cause maximum damage with your weapon. Using special abilities is easier, because in most cases you do not need to aim so precisely to cause maximum damage in the short window while the Titan is attacking you.

If you fight in a team, simply stay behind the creature and use your best attacks as soon as the weak spots are revealed.

In the image above, the Titan is preparing to spawn an Energy Sphere. In this very moment you can see both of his hands glowing near the wrists. Those are the weak spots. Concentrate your attacks there. In some attacks the Titan also exposes a weak spot on his back, just below his head. To hit that one successfully, though, you will have to either be very fast or be in a group, where someone else has the Titan’s attention (aggro).

The fight with a Titan can be split into two phases. In the first half of its HP, the Titan can only be attacked in his weak spots while he is attacking you. In the second phase, when he drops below 50% HP, his hands weak spots remain “active” all the time. His chest and back areas open up only when he does certain attacks, though. Remember – they are the weakest of the weak spots.

WHERE TO FIND TITANS IN ANTHEM

Some times you need Titans for an achievement or for a special item they drop or… Specifically for the timed challenge (event) “There be Giants”, there are four spots where these creatures usually spawn in the open world of Bastion. You may not always see them available. if that happens – just move on to the next spawn point.

Below are the locations on the map where you might encounter a Titan. Please, note, they are based on my personal experience. You will not see a Titan there always. If you don’t, respawn in Freeplay and check again.

If you need Titans for another reason (achievement, perhaps?), you can find them in several faction-related missions and contracts. Doing the side story missions for Dax and Matthias from the Fort is a good way to meet and defeat Titans. Daily Missions (if you are done with the story ones) are also a good source for Titans, among other objectives, of course.

There’s a Titan also in The Heart of Rage Stronghold. It is one of the boss encounters, but its mechanics are identical to all other Titans.

Shotguns are extremely useful if you are in a Ranger or Interceptor javelin. Because of their mobility, you can navigate around the Titan, avoiding his attacks and dealing damage from up close with this powerful weapon. From a distance, it is up to you to pick anything you like. I personally prefer fast RPM weapons. Powerful high tier Snipers work too with a proper build.

WHAT REWARDS DO TITANS DROP

Anthem There Be Giants Titan Event Vinyl Challenge Reward

The vinyl you see in the image above is the reward you get for completing the There be Giants world event in Anthem, for which you have to find the four named Titans in Freeplay and kill them in any difficulty.

As with pretty much everything else in Anthem, the loot drops and rewards from Titans are also random for the most part. The one place you will need to kill Titans for a quest is when you are trying to craft the Shield of Dawn.

Based on your current level, group and difficulty, the rewards will vary in both quality and quantity. In Freeplay Titans are considered a form of a world boss. As such they do have a chance of dropping some juicy loot, but nothing is guaranteed.

GET CORIUM FROM TITANS FOR THE SHIELD OF DAWN

Anthem Crafting the Shield of Dawn

Titans drop Corium – one of the required elements for Crafting the Shield of Dawn. Defeating them is the way to get it. I may be mistaken or it could be a bug, but my tests show that in lower difficulties the Titans leave their weak spots open for longer periods of time. If you are in a hurry to find and kill some Titans, consider doing the Triple Thread and Hidden Depths missions if you haven’t completed it yet. At the end you will fight three Titans there.

TITANS IN THE ANTHEM LORE

Anthem Titans Lore

According to the game’s lore Titans are a major force, and a force to be reckoned with! Once a rare creature, titans have been continuously coming out of the Heart of Rage over the past few years, and so we’ve gotten to know more about them than ever before. Titans reproduce by growing an “offshoot”, a smaller copy that just breaks off and walks away. But smaller doesn’t mean less dangerous! If you happen to come across one, you may be lucky enough to catch them in a bad mood and see it shoot energy from its chest! What puts a titan in a bad mood? Just about everything! Truly unforgettable!
