When Captain Marvel was announced, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Especially when they announced her to be the strongest Avenger. But wait a minute… don’t we already have the Hulk and Thor as the heavy hitters?
Captain Marvel official synopsis
Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.
Who is Verse?
The movie starts off with Verse having nightmares. She wakes up as a woman with no memory of the past or who she is. They call her Verse because thats what one half of her dog tag said: Verse.
And that differs from all other Marvel movies. Another difference from the usual origin movie from Marvel is that Captain Marvel has all of her powers but beware, as a voice warns her: What has been given can be taken away!
Captain Marvel and her team are off to an extraction mission to rescue a spy. The team are lured into an ambushed however and the skrulls take Vers prisoner.
After she breaks free, Vers manages to take an escape pod and crashes into Blockbusters. Welcome to Earth and more importantly: Welcome to the 90s.
I have to say that from that point on, the movie picks up the pace. So many 90s references starting with her shirt that she proudly wears: NIN but people who grew up in the 90s know what band it is! The Nine Inch Nails. One of the greatest bands I know from the 90s.
More references are The Fresh Prince, Heart and TLC’s Waterfalls. But also the use of language is akin to the use of language in the 90s so don’t be surprised when you hear something like “Thats the killer”. Oh, how I loved that part. I miss the 90s expressions sometimes. They were so lit ;)
Emergency on Planet Earth
Once on Earth Verse runs into a deskjockey named Nick Fury. He is a less cynical version of the Nick Fury we met in earlier movies. In fact, this Fury is a complete rookie and yes; he still has both eyes and hair!
It’s also the point where Verse starts getting flashbacks about her previous life.
She finds out that the person the skrulls are looking for is a Kree undercover agent named Wendy Lawson. She is rumored to have invented a hyperspeed drive that can cross a person from one end of the galaxy to the other in no time. Yes, i am aware that space is infinite, but u get catch my drift right? ;)
While looking for Wendy they run into Sister from another Mister and co team member Maria “Photon” Rambeau and her little daughter Monica. Now, if you are like me and love to read the comics then you have a very good idea of who Monica Rambeau is. She is none other than the other Captain Marvel who changed her name later on to Photon. She has the ability to change into any form of energy you can think of. So think gamma rays, infra red and cosmic rays.
I couldn’t help but cheer when I heard the name Monica Rambeau and I sincerely hope we get to see her in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She played a pivotal part in the Avengers comics all throughout the 80s.
Together with Maria and Nick Fury, Captain Marvel save the day and a whole race.
The movie doesn’t end there but I fear I will spoil too much of the movie if I continue to write.
The Good
Another origin movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe but with a twist. The twist works out well and I hope Marvel will continue to surprise us with those little twists otherwise the Marvel formula will run its course sooner or later for the origin movies.
A nice introduction to Captain Marvel’s powers. By the looks of it, since they didnt put it on full display, she really will be among the strongest Avengers. But to call her the most powerful being of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? We need a whole other movie for that.
The Bad
The movie is filled with flat characters. The team of Captain Marvel, you literally won’t know a thing about them except for the weapons they wield. It could have been given a tiny storyline.
The Cameos
As you all know, Stan Lee passed away in 2018. But before he passed, he filmed a few cameos. This was the first of the rumored four that he has shot. And it is an emotional one.
Ronan the Accuser, the big bad from Guardians of The Galaxy part 1 is in the movie. We see him a few times but we see him so little that I find that his role is reduced to an extended cameo.
Many more 90s references and even back to the 70s. So be on the lookout for The Fonz, Steve Urkel, 90s music and 90s slang!
