Marvel's Avengers videogame trailer fails to make the case to make us buy it

Marvel’s Avengers videogame trailer fails to make its case

Square Enix revealed the Marvel’s Avengers game trailer on the E3 and the result was a washed up version of what the game could be!

Personally, I am not a big fan of movie franchises releasing a videogame. Most of the games turn out to be total failures. Think of the Iron Man videogame or The Matrix or The Hulk videogames from the past. Most of them lacking compelling gameplay or an invigorating storyline. The same that I think will to Marvel’s Avengers.

My issues with Marvel’s Avengers

I watched the trailer and I really didn’t like the art  direction of the game. The designs look a bit like Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and “something else” , I can’t exactly put my finger on it. I mean, Captain America looks a bit like Chris Evans but then again he doesn’t. It’s just a tadbit different to make sure that Square Enix bypasses copyright infringement on Evans’ face.

And these fake Avengers gives me the annoying feeling of milking that proverbial cow. It would have been better, I think, to have Square Enix find their own path and build up a universe from that point on.

On top of that, Marvel’s Avengers graphics aren’t exactly Next-Gen. With the Playstation 5 unofficially announced for 2020, can Square Enix actually afford to make the game look like it’s been made with DirectX 9? I don’t think they can. And what else I think is odd is that Square Enix will release Marvel’s Avengers straight after their own remake of Final Fantasy 7. Which surely will dominate sales in that period of time. So the question is: Why would Square Enix cannibalize themselves?

What I do like about Marvel’s Avengers

Let’s wait and see what the gameplay is like. I always did think that a game is more fun to play if the gameplay is nice and intuitive.  With intuitive gameplay you can replay a videogame a few times. Which I think is a must have for any singleplayer game.

The stuff I do like about Marvel’s Avengers is that the heroes are customizable. More and more skins will be available as time goes by. I mean who wouldn’t want to play with the Iron Man armor of the 1960s? Just make sure that you bring a power plug so you can recharge in any place in the world since wireless loading was beyond comprehension of people back then.

The fact that there won’t be any microtransactions ingame makes me happy.  Microtransactions are the bane of gamer’s existence in my opinion. Story DLC I can live with. Who can forget the Mass Effect 2 extra story DLC?  Or more recent: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s Fate of Atlantis? All that I would pay for. But extra skins? Like in Fortnite? No, thanks.

And Square Enix is making the game. The same guys responsible for Tomb Raider. I am a big Tomb Raider fan and I have played all the Tomb Raider games since the reboot back in 2013. If they can make the gameplay a little bit like that then the game may actually be saved after all. Who knows?

Should you get this game?

Moviefranchises and videogames don’t get hand in hand together. The past has shown that games like The Matrix, Iron Man and The Hulk that were created as an extra marketingtool for the movies,  were mostly rushed, felt unfinished and worst of all: they still made you pay top dollar for that product.

That said, with Spiderman on the Playstation 4 being one of the biggest sellers in 2018 and no, I haven’t forgotten the Batman’s Arkham series either, shows that games based on moviefranchises can become a success but only if they have forged their own path and set in their own universe.

Whether or not Marvel’s Avengers falls on the second part of my conclusion remains to be seen. With more trailers coming out and developers maybe doing livestreams we can get more insight in the gameplay. But for now, without all that, I myself wouldn’t buy the game.
