The Marvel TV shows announceed at the Disney D23 were very riveting and exciting. A lot of announcements of Marvel’s television shows that will feature on Disney+.
And there is some good news too about the Disney+ streamingservice: They are releasing the episodes of their new TV shows on a weekly basis. Which means that we can talk a bit longer about our favorite TV shows instead of having that awkward office conversation: Hey have you watched Orange is the new black? How about that series finale huh? “Oh shut up, I just got to episode 5…no spoilers”.I think it’s refreshing to have that.
Marvel TV shows on Disney+
Now on to the main event. Marvel announced several television shows three of which had already been announced a while. Namely, Falcon and Winter Soldier, Loki and WandaVision.
All three of those are shows that have been set up in plotlines in Avengers: Endgame except for WandaVision, or at least I couldn’t find it.
In Avengers: Endgame we saw Loki disappear with the gem in his hands. Who knows where he ended up but some parts of the plot have already been revealed: Loki will be creating mischief throughout history.
Also in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America donned his famous shield to the person who deserves it the most: me! No wait, that was a typo. Honest! Captain America gave his shield to Sam Wilson a.k.a. Falcon! They did it in the comics and it worked but will it work on the small screen? I am skeptical but I have been skeptical before of some choices Marvel has made in the past but all of them worked out so far.
Falcon and the Winter Soldier have cast Emily VanCamp to reprise her role as Sharon Carter. And in even bigger news Wyatt Russel has been cast as US Agent.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Vision was stripped of his gem and killed by Thanos. I watched the Endgame movie but I could not find any plot thread that could possibly tell me how Vision will be revived.
And then I saw this:
It’s a beautifully made painting. The shadows are perfectly done. If you look closely at the background. The setting reminds me of a 1950’s perfect home. And that’s what bugged me about it. I was reminded of the storyline where Wanda created a subreality where life was perfect. It led to her believing that she had kids and lead the perfect life. Just as perfect as the painting.
Only time will tell if I am right and that that is the jumping point of WandaVision.
WandaVision has expanded their cast with Kat Dennings and Randall Park set to reprise their roles from Thor and Ant Man.
Marvel TV shows, the new batch
If you think we got spoiled with the three shows described above, then you are sadly mistaken. The TV shows were just the tip of the iceberg.
Marvel announced not 1 but 3 more TV shows. She-Hulk, Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel.
She-Hulk pretty much speaks for itself. The character is an icon and not just because she is the niece of Bruce Banner (at least in the comics she is, you never know with TV). From the comics this is basically a small synopsis about who She-Hulk is: After a bloodtransfusion Jennifer Walters from her cousin Bruce Banner, Jennifer develops the same mutation as her green cousin. But when she transforms she retains her personality and smarts unlike the Hulk.
Although I am not sure if that still applies after Avengers: Endgame with the Hulk now being Professor Hulk. Or Smart Hulk, whatever your preference.
Then there is Moon Knight. I had long hoped that this character would appear on the small screen. First, I hoped for a Moon Knight show on Netflix. Because Moon Knight would be a perfect fit for the Marvel’s Netflix universe. But that didn’t happen. So imagine how overjoyed I was when Moon Knight was announced.
Who is Moon Knight?
While working for the African mercenary Raoul Bushman in Egypt, the group stumbles upon an archaeological dig whose crew includes Dr. Peter Alraune and his daughter Marlene Alraune. The dig had uncovered an ancient temple where artifacts included a statue of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Intent on looting the dig, Bushman kills Dr. Alraune. In response to Alraune’s murder, Spector challenges Bushman to personal combat and is defeated by Bushman and left to die in the sub-zero temperatures of the desert night.
Long story short: Spector is saved and given a second chance at life by Khonshu if he agrees to become Khonshu’s avatar on earth. Spector does and creates several identities to keep in touch with different walks of life and goes out at night as the vigilante Moon Knight to fight crime as the avatar of Khonshu.
Ms. Marvel
It seems only yesterday that Kamala Khan got her own comicbook back in 2014. I read the first few and while I liked it, I got busy and never finished her first run in the Marvel Universe.
What sets her apart from the other superheroes is that Kamala is a moslim superhero. She was the first muslim to appear in the Marvel Universe and her first comics were well received and she became an icon in only just five years.
She is so popular that she now has her own Marvel TV show and I can’t wait to see it. Her powers include polymorphing and she can stretch her arms and legs as well as change her appearance.
What do you guys think weekly episodes instead of binging? Do you already have money cast aside for Disney+ ? And what do you make of the announcements of the Marvel TV shows at the D23?
