EA and Respawn debuted a brand new trailer for the upcoming third-person action-adventure video game Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. The 2 minutes long clip is called “Cal’s Mission” and shows bits and peaces of the game and its narrative that we have not seen before. Will this trailer make you (even more) impatient for the full game to be released, let’s find out together! Below I have a breakdown type of an article with lots of images picking on specific moments from the trailer and sharing insights, observations and speculations about the game!
The Triple Force Friday lasted about 45 minutes and aired tonight – on September 26 on StarWars.com and the official Star Wars YouTube channel. The event was designed to premiere toys, apparel and other new products mostly related to the three big titles coming out this Holiday season. In order of release dates we have:
- November 12 – The Mandalorian – a TV Show premiering exclusively on Disney +.
- November 15 – Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order – a video game available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, developed by Respawn Entertainment under EA’s hood.
- December 18 (20) – Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – the ninth and the final movie from the Skywalker Saga.
The Jedi Fallen Order segment was the first one. It included a short interview with Cameron Monaghan, who plays Cal Kestis – the main protagonist in the game.
He didn’t say much, but rather appeared there to share his excitement for being a part of the Star Wars global cast with his physical performance and voice-over for his character in the game.
Cameron also previewed a few new toys and a cool looking t-shirt inspired by the game.
The main topic of this article is the new trailer and it aired only several minutes into the live stream for Triple Force Friday live event. The trailer was only a minute and 57 seconds long, but showed us a few new places, some dialogue between Cal and his crew and a few inspiring battle scenes and action moments.
“In the Galactic Empire, the Inquisitorius has only one mission: seek out and destroy all remnants of the Jedi Order. Learn more about what Cal Kestis is searching the galaxy for and why the Empire will stop at nothing to bring him down.” – the description of the video on EA Star Wars YouTube channel.
Let’s break down the more interesting things from the trailer in a few images with commentaries, shall we! Each image is followed by a short commentary text describing and analyzing what is shown on it.
In the very first few seconds we see Cal running towards a ship, where Cere (played by Deborah Wilson) shouts at him to hurry and get on board.
Cal was running from what appears to be an Inquisitor. It is likely that this was the same one we saw in the Celebration 2019 gameplay trailer – the Second Sister Inquisitor from Darth Vader comic-book Issue 19.
This must be very early on in the game as Cere is expected to be part of Cal’s crew and this is the scene where they meet for the first time as we learn from the following conversation in the next scene.
Deborah Wilson does not look like an alien in the real life and I sure hope that this crazy-eyes effect (more like a bug) is coming from the fact that the trailer was promoted by Xbox and thus the graphics would be lowered. Or perhaps she is not exactly a human… I don’t know what to believe, heh…
This was an epic moment that attempts to show how rich the game is diving into the Star Wars lore. I could not tell if this is Kashyyyk or any other known or unknown planet, but based on the green exterior, the follow-up scene of Cal walking through a dark cave reminded me very much of what we saw at Celebration. So my bet is that this was a scene from Kashyyk.
“He’s searching for something. Something very precious to the Empire” – are the words that the narrator speaks during this gorgeous environmental cutscene. What could it be?
Is Cal searching for the lost knowledge of the Jedi? For a way to restore the Order after Palpatine and Vader destroyed it?
The Jedi Order logo Cal is brushing/cleaning up in this shot suggest that he is looking for a secret related to the origins of the Jedi. Sure would be nice to finally delve more into the Ancient times of the new Star Wars Canon and learn more about the Jedi Order and its history. We go a glimpse of it in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but not nearly enough.
“Are you with us?” The question that does not need an answer. If Cal would have said no, this game would have turned into something completely different than what it is advertised to be. In this shot we see Cal and his new friends/crew agreeing that they are “done hiding”.
The character behind the camera asks “All right, where we going next!?” while the four planets rotate on the screen before us. The developers explained at Celebration that the game is not linear, despite the fact that the trailers and gameplay demo suggest it to be very linear.
You will be able to choose where to go next. How much of a free choice will that be and how often will you be able to make it. What planets will you be able to travel to and from whenever you want. These are questions that this new trailer, sadly, does not give answers to.
Big giant creatures and perhaps bosses will be frequent opponents standing on Cal’s way by the looks of it. Every time you see a big empty and narrow arena, expect a giant creature, a droid or something else nasty to appear and start attacking you. This mechanic has been invented years ago and I think Jedi Fallen Order will be pulling it very often.
That’s not a bad thing, of course. I don’t want to sound pessimistic about it. Just pointing out that it’s not very innovative. Nor very surprising.
The few action/combat scenes we got to see were either new and never before shown or very well-made sinematics. I quite like the variety of ways Cal is using to defeat his enemies. I sure hope these don’t get boring after 2 hours of gameplay.
If you have some 45 minutes to spare, check out the full archive of the Triple Force Friday Global Reveal of new Star Wars products. The event was fun and interesting. It featured a lot of the new and some old legendary actors – the cast of the Star Wars Saga.
That was my analysis and breakdown of the new Jedi Fallen Order “Cal’s Mission” story trailer. I hope you found it interesting. I have been impatiently waiting for the game to be released. Now, after another trailer, my hype levels have risen up quite high again.
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order comes to your PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One on November 15 (Friday, of course). The game is available in two editions and can be pre-ordered now.
How do you feel about this game? Is it something you are excited to get and play for yourself or are you planning to see reviews and gameplay first, then decide if you want to buy it?
