Cloak and Dagger has been canceled by FreeForm. The show consisted of two seasons and will never see a third.
Cloak and Dagger were superheroes in New Orleans. Which differs from the usual since almost all superheroes apparently seem to operate in New York. All major threats show up to New York. I suppose the bad guys want to see the Statue of Liberty and sightseeing before they decide they want to destroy our world.
But the show was still set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cloak and Dagger MCU Origins
When Tandy Bowen and her dad drive home from ballet, an oil platform from Roxxon explodes. Her dad dies in the wave of the explosion while Tandy gets hit by an energy wave from the blast.
Meanwhile Tyrone Johnson is being dissuaded by his brother Billy to steal a car radio. An agent named Connors finds the two and shoots Billy, who drops into the ocean. Tyrone jumps into the sea after him but Billy turns up dead while Tyrone is hit by the same energy wave as Tandy did.
They both end up unconcious on the shore.
Years later, Tyrone is a straight A student in high school while Tandy steals from the rich and avoids her mom and her new lawyer boyfriend. When Tandy and Tyrone run into each other at a party, their gifts manifest themselves. Tandy finds out that her daggers can kill and she kills a former target of hers with her light dagger while Tyrone finds out that he can teleport.
Over the course of the show we see that the two of them learn how to control their powers better and better. But also new ways to use their powers as well.
Differences with the comics
The comicbooks of Cloak and Dagger are different. Yes, their names are the same but their character backgrounds are completely different.
In the comics, Tyrone is from Boston, Massachussets, stutters and has a speech impediment. His speech impediment prevented him to warn his friend who was shot by the police. However his friend was innocent. And Tyrone never really got over that. He runs away from home where he turns to a life of petty crime.
When he sees Tandy, who is an upperclass girl being the daughter of a multimillionare mother, he wants to steal her purse. Instead her purse gets stolen and Tyrone gets it back for her.
When a naive Tandy agrees to accept an offer from some shady people, Tyrone joins her as a way to keep an eye on her. The two of them however fall into the wrong crowd with an alchemist experimenting on them with synthetic heroin.
They both gain powers after the experiments with Tyrone being able to teleport himself via the Darkforce Dimension and Dagger gaining the powers of light daggers.
So you can see that the TV show and the comics have swapped their backgrounds completely.
The cancellation means another Marvel TV project is gone. We first saw the cancellations of Marvel’s Netflix shows and then Agents of SHIELD got canceled after 7 seasons. Earlier this year, Legion was canceled on FX while Ghost Rider was recently scrapped. This means we will only get to watch The Runaways and the upcoming show Helstrom.
