Assassin’s Creed Valhalla splits Eivor’s special moves into two categories – abilities and skills. This guide will explain what Skills and Abilities are, how they differ from each other, how to learn and master them and what are the best ones to take early on!
This guide does NOT contain story spoilers. It only shows and explains what you need to know about the Skills and Abilities systems in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and which to learn as fast as possible to get an edge and a bit more depth to your Eivor build.

What are Skills and Abilities in AC Valhalla
Skills and Abilities in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are special moves that you can perform in certain situations and under certain conditions. They follow a similar formula from the previous games of the series Origins and Odyssey. To an extend, though.
Skills are earned by spending Skill Points. You earn Skill Points by exploring the world, fighting and completing quests. Abilities are learned by finding Books of Knowledge in the world or completing story quests.
How Skills work in AC Valhalla
Skills allow you to perform a certain action under a specific circumstance, but the action is free. You do not spend any resources doing so, which means you can do these actions endlessly if you have the opportunity for that.
How Abilities work in AC Valhalla
Abilities are another type of special moves that Eivor can perform in combat. They require a resource called Adrenaline. Adrenaline is a familiar feature from the previous games in the series. You build it during combat and thanks to a few specific perks and passives you can earn or use, you can increase the build-up process. Adrenaline also fills up on its own in time.
How Adrenaline works in AC Valhalla
You start with one Adrenaline Slots (or Bars) and can add more through the Skill Trees system (more on that below). Each Ability you use spends Adrenaline. Some abilities spend one bar of Adrenaline, while others might spend less than one. Adrenaline builds up from light attacks in combat and from performing special things in fights. You can replenish it by eating some mushrooms available in the fields and some times in strategic places during story quests.
AC Valhalla Skill Tree and Skills Overview
The Skill Tree is hidden at first and you uncover its segments by spending more and more Skill Points. Each time your “level” meter at the top right of the Skill Tree screen fills up, you receive 2 Skill Points
Check out the guide on how leveling works in AC Valhalla to find out more about the things that affect your combat performance, how XP, Power and Skill Points are all connected in one system.
Skills Screen Overview
When you start the game, you begin from the middle of the Skill Tree. The way Skills are situated around the starting point really makes it look like you are going around on a Skill Tree, visually.
To access the Skills Screen, click on that word from the top menu bar. In the top right corner you see an empty square that fills up as you complete quests or do any activities in the game such as raiding, exploration or mini games.
When the symbol fills up blue, you earn 2 Skill Points. To actually learn an active Skill from any of the trees, you have to spend a number of Skill Points on Passives. The small icons are Passives, while the big ones are Skills.
In the bottom middle of the screen you see your current Power Level rank. This is equal to the number of Skill Points you have spent so far on the Skill Tree above.
You can reset all or a single Skill node at any given time. Right-click on the node to reset it and get the Skill Point back to relocate it elsewhere or click the button in the bottom right corner to Reset All Skills at the same time and create a fresh new build.
In the lower left you see a number of Skill Points currently unspent. If it displays a zero, this means that you have no more points to spend at the moment. Play the game to earn more.
The Skills are separated in three differently colored Skill Trees or segment. I have explained each one of them below.
Differences between the 3 Skill Trees
Skills and Passives bring you different kinds of boosts and perks based on what your current equipment is. If you are wearing a Raven Armor Set and prefer to play more stealthy melee, the Revan (yellow) skills are your best choice to start with.
Each of the three paths offers different kinds of Skills and Passives. Make sure that you wear the type of gear that you are investing Skill points into.
All Skills from the Bear Skill Tree
The path of the Bear is marked in red. The Passives and Main Skills in this category focus on improving your melee combat performance. If you are the type of Eivor who doesn’t shy from a raw battle toe-to-toe, this is the tree for you to start with.

Best Skills to pick up early
No matter what Skill Tree you prefer, find the +1 Adrenaline Point and get it as soon as possible. Having an extra Adrenalin bar will allow you to use your Abilities more frequently and will increase your performance drastically.
For any stealth assassin the Advanced Assassination skill is a must-have. When you attempt to assassinate a stronger target this ability will allow you to do it in one go without having to finish off the opponent in open combat.
Another great addition for the same gameplay style is the ability to chain assassinations. It’s called Chain Assassination and is close to the Advanced Assassination in the skill tree.
Yet another great addition from the same tree is the Assassin’s Cantrip. When you parry an attack, you will throw a smoke bomb at your feed and disappear. This further increases the deadliness of your Eivor character.
The Sprint Attack is one of my favorites. It is a low tier skill and can be picked up early one and gives you a nice mobility option. Plus it has a cool animation.
If you play on higher difficulties and are not a master Assassin’s Creed Player yet, Grit may be of help to pick up early as it will allow you to restore some portion of your health in combat.
The Perfect Attack skill from the Red Tree is a great one to have if you like open combat and fight multiple enemies a lot and often. It will help you do more damage by not doing anything overly complicated or dependent on various circumstances.
One of the most fun and best damage dealing abilities is Stomp from the Bear Skill Tree. If you build your Eivor to have other supportive perks to knock enemies down, Stomping them will prove to be a very effective way to eat through their HP bars.
What are Mastery Points and how to earn them
There are a total of 400 Skill nodes in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Skill Tree. When you reach Power Level 400, three new Skill Nodes will be unlocked. They are called “Mastery Points” and you can indefinitely spend points on them.
When you reach Power Level 400 you will begin earning Mastery Points. You earn them the same way as before – completing quests, solving mysteries, hunting and defeating bosses and so on.
The Mastery Points are separate from the Skill Points and they will appear on the bottom right of your Skills screen. From this point forward you will be earning Mastery Points instead of Skill Points. Even if you reset your Skill Points, these could not be used to increase the Mastery perks.
The Mystery Points nodes appear in the middle of the tree. When you spend Mastery Points on the nodes, a little number below them will let you know how many points you have spent so far on this node, just FYI.
Each Skill Point spent on Mastery Points increases slightly a number of combat perks for your character. You cannot reset Mastery Points at this moment. You can spend up to 30 Mastery Points on each Mastery Skill. Here is the list of benefits for each one:
Bear Mastery
- Melee Damage
- Melee Resistance
- Health
Raven Mastery
- Assassination Damage
- Evasion
- Health
Wolf Mastery
- Ranged Damage
- Ranged Resistance
- Health

AC Valhalla Abilities Overview
Abilities in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are split into two sections – Melee and Ranged. You can have up to four abilities slotted for each one of the shortcut bars. A total of eight abilities can be slotted at the same time. You can freely remove and replace abilities in the slots.
To add an ability to an empty Ability Slot, open the Abilities Screen and click on the Ability. A pop-up will show asking you which slot you want to place the selected Ability into. Press the corresponding number from 1 to 4 (on PC) to place that ability there.
When in combat or before combat begins, use that same shortcut to activate that Ability. Some Abilities require a target, others might be a self-boost or grant you certain perks and bonuses for a short period of time.
There are 11 Abilities for the Melee Side and 11 for the Ranged Side. Each ability can be found and later upgraded.
Abilities Screen Overview
To open the Abilities Screen, click on “Abilities” at the top left from the menu bar.
On the left side you see the Ranged Abilities, on the right side are the Melee Abilities. Each one has two small dots under it. Once you discover a new ability, you get it in Tier 1. You can discover the same ability later to upgrade it to Tier 2 for additional bonuses and stronger performance.
If you hover over an ability, it will display a detailed information and a short animation of what exactly this ability does for you and a hint how to use it.
To learn a new Ability or upgrade an existing one, you need to find something called Book of Knowledge. These are hidden in many different places across Norway and Endlang.
What are Books of Knowledge and how to find them
Book of Knowledge is an object you can interact with in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to learn or upgrade an Ability. It looks like a pedestal with a book on it.
The Books of Knowledge are hidden usually in dungeons, in churches, crypts and caves. Some of them are easy to find, while others may involve some tricky parts to get to them.
When you approach a Book of Knowledge, the gold dot on your map and radar will turn into a gold book icon, notifying you that you are close to a new Ability or upgrade to one!
It doesn’t matter which Book of Knowledge you discover first. The next segment of the guide will give you the locations of all Books of Knowledge, but don’t pay attention to my numbering them “1” and “2”. Whichever you want to get first, you will still get Level 1. Whichever you get second, you will get the Upgrade of the same Ability.

Best Abilities to learn early on
One of the best damaging abilities and easy to perform is the Rage of Helheim. I would recommend you go for it first. Its Book of Knowledge not hard to find. With the upgrade this ability becomes a great boss-beater.
If I had to pick a favorite ability, though, that would be the Harpoon Impalement. This is unbelievably powerful and I would not be surprised if Ubisoft nerfs it in a future Assassin’s Creed Patch.
Poison is a strong weapon on its own, so I would recommend you use the Poison Melee Ability as well. It’s given to you as part of the story at a certain point, but is well worth the slot.
Blinding Rush is a good method to run through a place undetected. Very useful if you have something to pick up, but wish to avoid a fight. Especially useful if that area is meant for higher Power Level exploration and you want a precious piece of new armor or weapon!
A great and easy way to get rid of dangerous foes is to use Kick of Tyr. It sends them flying and you are often fighting in high places, so plenty of opportunities for your enemies to fall.
On the left side I’d advise you to get Martk of Death. It deals great damage to multiple enemies.
If you want to save yourself a little it of trouble while exploring secret passageways or if you like to fight multiple foes at the same time, the Incendiary Powder Trap ability will come handy. It’s very powerful and also works well with several Passives from the Bear Skill Tree.
The Man’s Best Friend ability is precious and with its upgrade it becomes even more fun. You start feeling like a pet-master or whatever that class is called in your favorite MMO game.
As it may seem obvious from this segment of the guide, I much more prefer melee combat, so it was hard for me to pick more than these two Ranged Abilities to recommend.
What is the Best Build in AC Valhalla
While there isn’t actually a Best Build in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, I would still give you a strong recommendation for one to have fun with and feel strong and agile at the same time.
The Stealthy Raven-focused builds tend to yield better and quicker results. Swinging heavy axes is mighty cool, but very slow and clumsy. And I am not a fan of primarily shooting arrows in an Assassin’s Creed game. Although this mechanic is by far the best in last three games that I have played.
As an agile assassin you can be very mobile and quick around your opponents, stabbing them from the back and now allowing them to touch you even.
I have listed some recommendations for skills and abilities to pick up as soon as possible in the respective sections earlier in this guide. When you are going for a specific build, make sure that any part of your gear supports it.
If you are going for an Assassin Build, you want to focus on the Raven Skill Tree and compliment it with a proper Armor set like The Mentor Set.
Advanced Assassination is a must-have in any case and it is going to be your go-to skill for so many encounters. Chain Assassination is also a very very useful Skill. Brush with Death gives you a nice advantage if you are precise with your dodge, which is not hard at all.
In addition to the so-called important skills from above also make sure you pick up all +1 Adrenaline Slots and have as many of the Passives that boost your combat performance with a Raven set and the pair of weapons you are using. Yes, I strongly recommend you go for daggers/seaxes for an Assassin Build.
Suttungr’s Claw and Yngling’s Seax are a perfect combo to use in addition to the Mentor Set. This is my preferred Assassin Build and it works very very well.
To complete the gear build I like to use the Hunbeorth’s Bow or Iron-Cloud. Having the extra Stun perk is great, but some times Speed is king. A plus is that the Iron-Cloud is Raven Ligh Bow, so it does get an extra benefit from all extra Raven Gear passives in the Skill Tree.
The Abilities I recommend you to go with it are the Harpoon Impalement (perfect for Elites), Rage of Helheim (for bosses) and Incendiary Powder Trap for exploration and blowing things up, because it’s fun. Anything else feel free to choose as you see fit.
In the Rune Slots I prefer to stack damage-boosting perks such as + Attack, +Poison and +Damage ones.
As you progress through the story and reach the EndGame you would have accumulated more than enough points to pick up Skills and Passives from all trees. Until then I recommend you to follow this guide and see if this playstyle fits you and entertains you. If you prefer to wield a Spear or a Heavy Axe or even a Flail, then by all means don’t think that this build I am describing is the only viable one. Not at all. You know you can dual-wield Shields, right? That’s insanely fun too! Enjoy!
This concludes my guide. If you spot a mistake or a missing ability or a hint that could be added to improve the experience of reading and using this guide, please, leave a comment or reach me at info@vulkk.com or on Twitter and Facebook.
