Who is Fenrir in AC Valhalla
According to the legends, Fenrir is the great wolf prophesized to devour Odin during the battle of Ragnarok. He is the son of Loki, and his siblings are the goddess Hel and Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent. Despite Odin’s effort to find a loophole in the threads of the Fates, events continue to unfold as foretold.
In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla you will meet Fenrir three times in Asgard as part of Eivor’s dreams sessions under the influence of Valka’s potions. First when it’s a small pup. Later on when it’s grown to a regular-sized wolf (this is also the first boss fight you will have against the beast)…
The final boss fight in again Asgard, after you have been to Jotunheim, defeated Suttungr and Loki and are now back in Asgard for one final task – to defeat the great wolf Fenrir – the beast is incredibly large in size now. It is part of the quest “Binding Fate”, which is part of Chapter 5’s “The Fate of the High One” story arc. The fight takes place in Asgard and is after your journey through Jotunheim.
Fenrir’s Abilities and Special Attacks explained
The fight is split into three thirds. After you take a third of the wolf’s Health, you will have to approach it and attempt to Bind it.
This is a triggered command that will pop up as an interaction option when you are close to the boss.
Eivor will throw the rope around the wolf and attempt to catch it and calm it down. On 66% and on 33% this is a mandatory mechanic. A short cinematic plays out and the outcome is a failure. The fight continues.
After each third of Health loss the wolf will add a new ability to its arsenal and will get even more ferocious and angry.
In the first part of the fight Fenrir will jump and turn around a lot. There is no special and dangerous frontal attack to my knowledge, though.
The wolf may jump against you very quickly, attempting to bite you, but this attack is very predictable and easy to avoid with a quick dodge or a roll.
Fenrir will often burrow and “swim” underground fast in random directions, but always makes wide circular turns. This is a mechanic the wolf used in your previous fight.
On the image above you can see the trail Fenrir leaves while moving underground. If this trail hits you, you get knocked back and you take damage.
The animation of the wolf surfacing up is quite long and you cannot damage it during that phase.
You have to wait for it to drag out of the ground all of its body and four legs before your hints can start dealing damage. Don’t waste your stamina or Poison / Fire Abilities earlier.
Sometimes the wolf goes underground twice in a row. If you see it get up quickly from the burrow mechanic, this is a sign it will do it again right away and continue to swim underground.
If the wolf surfaces right where you are, it will throw you in the air, then bite you hard and take a healthy chunk of your life away in a heartbeat. If it does start to eat you alive, spam-press the LMB or light attack button on your controller.
In the second phase of the fight, Fenrir will gain a new ability. The wolf will burrow its head into the ground and dig up a giant log. It will start swirling it around.
Fenrir will throw it at you in a moment. Time your dodge properly to completely avoid any incoming damate.
Below 33% Health Fenrir will jump on the rocks surrounding the arena and start throwing large boulders at you. They are very easy to avoid, just keep running. Save your Stamina, don’t dodge.
The most annoying Ability of that boss is when it runs in a circle, creating a mini tornado. around itself. It’s very very deadly if the running wolf hits you while doing this.
It’s almost instant death (on higher difficulties, at least). With each circle Fenrir makes, it widens up the radius of the tornado. I was not able to discover a way to interrupt this. You just have to wait it out at a safe distance.
Meanwhile, there will be flying rocks out of that tornado in any direction. Their reach is limited, so if you are far away enough during that ability phase, you will not have to worry about the rocks.
When the boss is on very little Health, the third and final Bind will trigger. This is the end of the fight.
It’s interesting to note that the three binds are actually you gradually binding the wolf with the special cord made by Ivaldi. First, you wrap up his neck and chest, then you wrap it around the middle part of its torso and finally around its rear legs and mouth to completely conquer the beast and pin it down unable to move, finally.
Tips on how to defeat Fenrir in AC Valhalla
Now that you know what Fenrir can do during the fight, let me share a few strategies and builds you can use to defeat the giant beast easier.
A great build would be a nice upgraded and proper Bow-Build. I would not recommend a Predator Bow. Hunter Bow or Light Bow seems to be the best option.
Fenrir has four weak spots for ranged attacks. They glow in bright green (ish?) color and are located on the elbows of his legs. All four of them.
Keep in mind that both melee and ranged attacks won’t do anything if the boss is just surfacing up from an underground swim session or if you are at a point in the fight where you have to do the Bind mechanic.
Range-fighting him in the third phase is also a good idea because the tornadoes may happen right on top of your head and you will lose a lot of HP trying to get out of it.
Fenrir is incredibly fast and agile, but not very dangerous from close distance. Except for the tornado ability, which is very deadly.
A long-reach melee weapon seems pointless in my experience. The wolf turns and swings very fast and its movements are very quick in general. You will not gain much of an advantage if you rely on Gungnir’s longer distance, for example.
If you have been reading my other Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Guides, you know that I am not a fan of bows in this game (or any AC game for that matter). My best success in my kills while testing the fight for this guide was with my favorite Raven Assassin Build.
I like having Poison running on Fenrir all the time. Grit is a useful skill to have here as usual. Brush with Death not so much, though. The beast is just too big and too chaotic to attempt to time your dodges properly.
Try to stay under the wolf and hit its belly or back legs. The only downside to this style is that you always need to be aware of a potential upcoming tornado ability from the boss.
There are a lot of arrows lying around the arena and flowers to pick up to replenish your Health if needed. If you get the Arrow Reinforcement skill you will be able to pick up any arrows that didn’t hit their target. This is an essential skill for any Wolf Build, I’d say.
