This guide will help you learn the mechanics and find out the possible strategies for how to defeat Suttungr in Jotunheim, in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla!

Who and what is Suttungr in AC Valhalla

According to the legends when two treacherous dwarves murdered Suttungr’s parents, he set out to avenge them. In exchange for sparing their lives, the dwarves offered him a magical Mead, which he hid in a vault inside the mountain Hnitbjorg. Along with his daughter Gunlodr, he guarded it jealously, until one day, Odin came looking for it…

Many legends have a nugget of fact at the heart, even if the tale itself is fantastical. The Mead, in particular, seems a metaphor for something else. Equally, Suttungr may be a representation of some powerful ruler from unrecorded Norse history.

Suttungr

In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla you meet Suttungr in Jotunheim as part of Eivor’s dreams after he drinks form Valka the Seer’s potions. You participate in a feast he organizes for you and during that feat you sneak into the mountain’s hidden cave to steal the Mead. The giant catches you and this is where you fight with the giant blue guy begins! To find out how to defeat Suttungr, check the next section of the guide!

How to defeat Suttungr in AC Valhalla

Suttungr is not a very difficult boss to beat. He is very large, but not very quick and his special attacks are for the most part easy to predict and avoid.

When Suttungr runs towards you, he will try to grab you with his hand. This attack is easy to avoid by running away, going behind him or dodging.

Suttungr has a weak spot in his left knee. If you want to use Ranged attacks, this is where you should aim.

His right elbow is also a weak spot. You have to wait for them to be revealed in specific positions the boss takes.

In general for any melee builds, the best place to be is behind the boss. His movements are not very fast and his turning is slow enough for you to have plenty of time to move as he tries to turn to face you.

When Suttungr lifts his left hand and you see this animation (image below), a rain of ice will begin right after this short channel.

Suttungr will stick his sword into the ground. When the ice rain begins, look for the “safe spot”. It is near a lit fire cauldron. There are several fire cauldrons around the battle arena, but not all of them will be lit. Only the lit ones will provide cover for you during the ice rains.

While the rain lasts, which is a few seconds, you will have to fight the boss in this tight area, marked on the ground.

At 50% Health the boss will enter in Phase 2, following a short animation. He will pick up an iced long axe from the environment.

Suttungr will then throw that axe into the fire cauldron and destroy it.

The boss will start using a new special ability thanks to his axe. He will project lines of ice coming at you. Dodge or run to avoid their hit. Get to the next lit fire cauldron. The ice will not reach you there.

Suttungr will still rush towards you, but this time instead of grabbing you (both his hands hold a weapon), he will swing his long axe at you. Again an easy to avoid attack by dodging.

When Suttungr throws his axe into the cauldron to break it, move towards the next one in preparation for one of the boss’ special ice attacks.

While running under the ice rain, your movement will be slowed. You will be taking constantly damage over time until you reach the safe area. There are only four fire cauldrons, so you will have to finish the fight before Suttungr destroys them all.

This boss fight is rather short, but the “safe area” mechanic makes it more fun in my opinion. It makes it unique and different than the other boss fights in AC Valhalla.
