Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Orlog guide and strategies

What is Orlog in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, how to play it, how to win it and what rewards do you get from this Gwent-like mini-game!

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has a lot of new mini games added their list of activities. There is the drinking game, the fishing but you can also gather resources or hunt legendary animals. But if you are ever tired of all that then try the new game in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Orlog!

What is Orlog in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Orlog is a newly invented game that is reminiscent of Gwent from The Witcher 3 and more card games from other games. But beware: Before you know it you will forget all about the invigorating story of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and spend all your time rolling the dice in Orlog. And the game does not even provide you with significant rewards or anything except for unlocking more things that have to do with the game itself. Oh and that Orlog Champions trophy.

The basic rules of Orlog in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

As with any game, the goal of Orlog is to defeat your opponent. In this case you take away all their healthpoints which are located next to the player’s bowl (the grey stones).

The game starts with a coin-toss to see who gets to roll the dice first and then chose whichever dice they want to play. There is a maximum times that you can roll and it is three. Same goes for your opponent.

After the three rolls you get access to the God Favor. Resolutions phase is up next and with each dice that you have chosen in that particular order and the God Favor too ofcourse. If you or your opponent does not win, the next turn starts. After the third roll the game will automatically use the dice faces that have been rolled and there is no more rolls after that. So whatever you roll last on the third try will be your dice.

The game’s resolutions can be very quick or it can go on for a while. It depends on who you are playing and your own playstyle.

There are five different dice faces you can roll in Orlog:

Axe deals 1 melee damage
Arrow deals 1 ranged damage
Helmet blocks 1 melee damage
Shield blocks 1 ranged damage
Hand steals 1 God Token from your adversary
The dotted outline means that you have a God token at the start of the resolution phase
  • Axe: Deal 1 melee damage, can be blocked by the Helmet
  • Arrow: Deal 1 ranged damage, can be blocked by the Shield
  • Helmet:  Block 1 melee damage from the Axe
  • Shield: Block 1 ranged damage from the Arrow
  • Hand: Steal 1 God Token from your adversary
  • The Dotted line: The dotted line gives you a God Token

The dices are to deal damage, block it or to steal a God Token from your adversary. Next to that, the dices can also be outlined with a dotted line. This means you get to have a God Token at the start of the resolution phase, which is what you will need in order to spend the God Favors (more about God Favors later).

Please note the following: The orange-bordered dice can have any symbol. For instance, a hand dice with an orange border not only gives you one token, but it steals another from your opponent.

There are six unique dices. Each one of them has two symbols with dotted borders. If you hover over the dices, you can see which dice has what options and determine if you want to keep it or roll it again.

What are the God Favors

God Favors is what makes Orlog so much fun because they are extra superpowers that you can add to the game and you are using the powers of the Gods!

You stack up a bunch of God Tokens throughout your game and you can have up to three God Favors on you, each one of them has up to three levels of intensity.

Just imagine that your opponent has six health left and you have seven God Tokens left. You can, in theory, focus on gaining a single God Token and defend your health points throughout the Resolution. When you select a God Token, go for Thor’s strike and choose the second level. This deals five damage to your opponent and you get eight tokens in returns. And the game will be yours.

You can get God Favors by beating Orlog players from all over the world of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Just go to a village, town or a camp and there usually is an Orlog player waiting to take you on. You can find them by checking for the icon of two dice on your map.

These are the God Favors that are available and could see potentially more added to the list.

  • Thor’s Strike: Deal damage
  • Idun’s Rejuvenation: Health
  • Vidar’s Might: Remove opposing helmets
  • Baldr’s Invulnerability: Adds helmets / shields for each helmet / shield already rolled
  • Skadi’s Hunt: Add more arrows for each arrow already rolled

Note that each God Favor has different requirements when it comes to God Tokens, so keep an eye on how much you need to spend for each level.

Explaining the Thor God Favour

Using Thor’s might to gain an advantage is essential for a win. So far in all games, Thor’s might made the difference. Thor’s damage cannot be blocked by shields or helmets, so you’re getting results for your effort for sure. The only way to counter Thor’s might is to use a godly power to heal their damage. And even then, the opponent is spending favors to undo your spending of favors. It puts them in the position of reacting to you, giving you a tactical advantage. Saving favors and spending them on Thor is a simple, straightforward path to victory.

If you can make early use of Thor, then wait until your opponent is down to have health or below before you can even do five damage to you. If you are able to create such a distance between you and your opponent then do not hesitate to go all in and reel in your victory.

It really depends however on who your opponent is. The AI of the opponent is set in such a way that they vary their strategy. And just that creates your window to focus on a single type of damage. Rolling five axes for example and watching your opponent’s pick of one helmet, two shields, two arros and a hand fail to protect them from your assault. But in order to create such a situation you will need to have your opponent roll first so that you can tailor an even more refined strategy if they go first. So a little Game Theory mathmetics is at hand here. If your opponent pick a shield, go for axes, if they go for helmets, you pick the arrows. And with Thor your Resolution can go very fast and will do either a lot of damage or put your opponent on the defensive.

So far the Thor God Favour is the best for all matches since it is almost impossible to counter. So use Thor’s might but use it wiseley and you may get that trophy real quick.

Tips and Tricks to win at Orlog

There are limitless possibilities to win at Orlog in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Ubisofr created a smart and unique system that relies on tactics, strategy and skills, and all of that mixed with a slight hint of RNG.

Create a Gameplan to take on your opponents

There is no real structure on how to win at Orlog and there is a variety of ways that you can play the game. You can go on the offense or play very defensively while slowly stacking up God Tokens and you can even go all-in on the God Tokens and gather a lot of them. Since there is no one way or even a right way to play Orlog, do make up a gameplan and stick by it through and thin. Be consistent in your games of Assasin’s Creed Valhalla Orlog.

God Favors are key to setting up your strategy and here is how

Once you have determined your strategy then you need to make sure that pick the right God Favors before you head into battle. For example, Thor’s strike is awesome once you all you need to do is simply do damage. But Thor’s strike also costs a lot of God Tokens compared to the others. When you have a decent number then pick the right one for the match that is tailored to your strategy and head in and make sure you win the match.

Keep track of your opponent’s moves in Orlog

Ofcourse God Favors the Bold but God also favors your opponent’s boldness! So be on the lookout and check how many God Tokens your opponent has. If you can in any way frustrate your opponent by hijacking a God Token to make sure that they can not use a God Favor and at the same time you get to land a killing blow then by all means you should totally go for it.

For instance if your opponent uses something that costs five tokens but you steal a couple of them during the Resolution and make sure they go below five, the God Favor will not succeed. You need to think quick on your feet and figure out how many tokens your opponent will be left with but at the same time, keep an eye on your own God Tokens.

How to counter in Orlog

The game is won or lost by the amount of damage you take so you will want to tailor your strats to taking as little damage as possible. In order to do so you try and counter your opponent at every turn. If they drop an axe and an arrow in the first dice roll, you make sure that you are selecting their counterparts to defend yourself. In this case it is the helmet and the shield as two of your six rolls. Every health point is essential so make your Resolution count at every turn.

If you manage to beat ALL of the of Orlog players in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla then you will receive a trophy and an achievement for it. The achievement counts ofcourse towards the percentage of completion of the game.

Best Tactics to win at Orlog

A tactic that could very well help in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Orlog is simply to build up your defenses as much as possible using Shields and Helmets while you stack up on God Tokens and then do as much damage as you can in the final round using God Favors and go for an all out attack.

But as mentioned before: Always keep an eye on your opponent’s dice rolls because you snooze, you lose. Tunnelvision is where things go wrong and you give your opponent a chance to let up. Try to counter all of the moves your opponent attempts to make.

Quick math should prevent you from getting beaten simply because of luck. it is better to defend and try to counter your opponent harshly on the next turn than it is to be defeated hoping for the best.

If you notice that your opponent is collecting God Tokens then make sure you are the one who keeps stealing them using the hand dice. But if their strategy is to keep using Idun’s Rejuvenation, focus on getting the axe dice and counter them with Vidar’s Might to remove the helmets. They may be forced to use the helmets because you use your axes.
