The guide contains light spoilers. Its goal is to help you defeat the boss easily, so keep reading if you’d rather not go into it completely blind or if you have already tried it and need a bit of advice how to beat it.
Reaching the Hilltop Monastery
In Outriders Yagak is the sixth Major story boss of the game, fought in the Utargak region of the story. This boss takes the form of a Polearm-wielding Monster.
After investigating a mysterious light source outside of the shelter you take from the sandstorm, you return to your camp to find out that your party was ambushed and taken captive. However, August (Agst) still remains in camp and knows where your companions were taken.
The “Bonds” quest will have you pursuing the Ferals that captured your companions, through a village swarming with them. Since your party has been captured, you will have to set your Story Point in the Game Lobby to a different section of the story if you need to interact with any of them, up until the end of this section and after this boss fight. However if you make it to the Boss area, setting your Story Point back will have you return to the same point in the Bonds quest, and you will not have to repeat any of it.
Preparing for the first Yagak Encounter
Yagak can be a rough fight if you’re not sure what to expect. As a Feral, he has a decent amount of health. Since the majority of his attacks will be him stabbing and swinging at you with his weapon, Armor helps the most to reduce his incoming damage.
Having the ability to apply Freeze, Slow, or Weakness can be very helpful for this fight. Since this fight is primarily close range and Yagak’s Melee attacks are rather fast, having the ability to lock him down or give you more time to react is very helpful for this fight. Weakness is a good alternative, which helps reduce the incoming damage of his rather fast attacks.
With him constantly lunging at you and staying in close proximity most of the fight, Shotguns and SMGs really shine in this fight. Though any non-sniper weapon can do fairly well in this fight.
If you are wiping continuously on this boss, check if your gear is updated and upgraded. Gear and Mods in Outriders play significant role for your combat performance and success. Another option is to just lower the World Tier (the difficulty of the game).
Keep in mind that the higher the World Tier, the better rewards you get. Better read this guide to learn how to defeat the Outriders Yagak boss and get nice powerful loot than to lower the difficulty, breeze through the boss and get worse rewards.
Yagak’s Attacks and Tactics
Yagak doesn’t feature any phases in his fight so he’ll be using his full, but limited pool of attacks right from the start. For the most part, these attacks will be pretty relentless and give you little time to retaliate.
Like most Ferals, Yagak’s weak point is his head. Though to hit it consistently you will need very quick aim or the ability to slow him. There are windows where he’s still when casting certain abilities, but then you run the risk of being hit by them if you’re too immobile.
Yagak will always open the fight with his first melee attack, Lunge. This first one and the subsequent ones can be avoided by rolling to the side as he lunges. You can also position yourself and put one of the pillars in the arena between you and him and he’ll be unable to reach you.
Unless using a pillar to keep distance, this will usually be followed by Double Slash. Yagak will only use this skill if you’re in melee range of him. This can easily be evaded with a roll backwards or to the side. Since this a set of two attack that are all targeted in the same direction, after dodging the first, you can use the time the other attacks use as a damage window or time to reposition yourself.
If you’re trying to keep a lot of distance from him, you’ll likely see Sweeping Lunge often as well. Similarly to Lunge, Yagak will leap at you, this time performing a sweeping swing rather than a stab. This will also be followed by a second slash that doesn’t retarget Similarly to Lunge, it can be dodged by rolling to the side, but this one can also be evaded with a well timed backwards roll.
Rounding out his melee attacks is Sweeping Slice. Similarly to Double Slash, Yagak will only use this attack in melee range. Yagak will step towards the player and swing his weapon in a small arc which can be evaded with a roll to the side or backward. Unlike Double Slash, this is a single attack and will re-target you for each use. He does typically do this two or three times if you remain in range.
Occasionally he will plunge his weapon into the ground and project a barrier around himself briefly while he Summons Allies. he will typically summon four of the melee Ferals, which usually don’t pose much threat as they can be dispatched easily. They’re also summoned two at a time so you can deal with them as they jump out of the pit in the center.
Outside of his Lunge attacks, he does have one other movement option, Displacement. Displacement is a quick mobility option of his, having him plunge his weapon into the ground before teleporting, generally a distance behind you.
When he does this, there’s a lightning trail you can use to gauge his general teleport direction. in the case of the image below, he’s starting on the right, and head behind us to the left.
There’s also a small explosion where he arrives, however this is unlikely to hit you as it’s not a skill that targets you directly. It may have a small chance to hit you if you’re backing away or trying to create distance while he casts it, though very rarely.
Finally, rounding out his attacks is Lightning Strikes. Yagak will plunge his weapon into the ground and begin channeling the Anomaly, calling down six Lightning Strikes that will center each of their area of effect on the player’s position.
After the sixth area is marked, you can use the remaining cast time to deal damage as he will be still until the last Lightning Strike hits, though short.
Upon depleting Yagak’s health, he will retreat from the fight and your allies will be free. He’ll leave behind a chest that will drop a Legendary item the first time you fight him in any Campaign. Like any other bosses with Guaranteed Legendary drops, repeat fights will not yield this reward and instead yield four item drops of varying rarity, based on World Tier.
