The locations and support characters in The Book of Boba Fett help create a unique atmosphere and deliver the classic Star Wars feeling!
The Book of Boba Fett’s first episode aired on December 29th, 2021. In it we learn more about Boba´s story after The Return Of The Jedi. How he survived and his attempt to reclaim Jabba´s throne.
At the time of this article, there are 3 episodes (or chapters) available and we know not everyone has the time to get into the lore. So, here’s a small guide to give you some context about the planet, the lesser-known characters and factions, and the history behind them.
Tatooine
Tatooine is a desert planet located in the Outer Rim. With two suns and almost no water on the surface, only a few settlements can exist. Homeworld of Anakin and Luke Skywalker.
Plagued with bounty hunters, scoundrels and crime lords, Tatooine is the perfect place for black markets and underworld trade to prosper.
While being one of the planets that we´ve seen the most in both movies and series, Tatooine still holds a lot of mystery within it. From terrifying creatures to old technology thought to be related to the Jedi and Sith from ancient times.
The Hutt Cartel
The Hutts are known to form some of the most powerful crime families in the Star Wars universe. The Hutts originally rose to power by conquering and enslaving hundreds of worlds, until a civil war tore them apart 15,000 years before the Skywalker saga.
After that, a Hutt council was created to prevent similar conflicts from happening in the future. They relocated to Nal Hutta and switched their interests to legal and illegal commerce,
While losing some of their resources, they still kept an immense amount of power. There wasn´t a criminal group in the galaxy that didn´t respect and feared them.
Even when the Republic and Galactic Empire were at the peak of their power, none would dare to risk open war with the Hutts.
Now that Jabba is dead, a vacuum of power was created and Boba Fett will have to defend his throne against known and unknown enemies.
The Pyke Sindicate
The Pyke Syndicate is a criminal family in charge of mining Spice, a substance used to create a powerful drug. They run the Spice mines of Kessel, using slaves from many planets to harvest their precious material.
While not being as powerful as the Hutt or other syndicates, they still present a threat to anyone in their path. Sadly, Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas found this the hard way, as he was killed while investigating them.
Tusken Raiders
The Tusken Raiders are also known as “Sand People” or “Tuskens”. Alongside Jawas, they consider themselves the only locals to the desert planet of Tatooine, and everyone else is a trespasser.
Despite being viewed as ruthless and cruel warriors, they´ve shown multiple times to care for each other, have deep bonds with their Banthas and even honor their word.
Their nomadic tribes consist of 20-30 individuals. Everyone holds a different role depending on age, gender and social hierarchy.
By proving himself to be a strong warrior, respecting their way of life and helping them obtain valuable resources, Boba Fett was accepted as one of them in chapter 2 of The Book Of Boba Fett.
The Jawas
The Jawas are small humanoid species from Tatooine. Known for scavenging everything they get their hands on (even if you´re still wearing it) and re-selling it to local residents.
Unlike the Tusken Raiders, they´re peaceful and pretty much defenseless against anyone so they try to avoid any conflict. If you want to deal with them, trading is the best option. But they are resourceful.
Rancors
The Rancors average 4.2 meters tall (14 feet) and 1600kg (3,527lbs). Native to Felucia and Dathomir, these reptilian creatures are one of the most powerful and intimidating in the Star Wars universe.
Contrary to popular belief, they are relatively peaceful and co-exist with other species. They can be domesticated and be very loving to their owners. But when bred for fighting, almost nothing can stand between a Rancor and its prey.
Black Krrsantan
Allowing himself to be captured from his homeworld of Kashyyyk after being exiled, he aspired for glory in the fighting pits.
After most of the other candidates were eliminated, his knuckles were filled with metal in order to gain an advantage against other fighters and appeal to the buyers.
On his debut, Krrsantan faced his opponents with his bare hands. He smashed the head of the first one in just a few seconds, threw the second one into a fire and have the last one praise him before snapping his neck.
Eventually, he acquired the heavyweight champion title.
Krrsantan later became a skilled bounty hunter and shared jobs with Boba Fett on a few occasions. Regularly hired by Jabba and eventually Darth Vader himself. After Jabba died, he was hired by the Twins.
He´s the third wookiee to be named in a mainstream Star Wars show. The other ones are Chewbacca and Tarfful, the chieftain in Revenge of the Sith.
Fennec Shand
Fennec Shand is a mercenary, an elite one at that. Most of you probably know her for her role in The Mandalorian. The character made appearances in The Bad Batch as well.
Fennec is a human female bounty hunter and master assassin. She became a famous bounty hunter during the peak of the Galactic Empire and rose to the top of the crime syndicates, taking only the highest paid jobs.
After the end of the Empire’s reign, she has been constantly chased as an outlaw. In her first appearance in The Mandalorian, she was left for dead and late rescued by Boba Fett to become his loyal companion in The Book of Boba Fett.
Krrsantan and Fennec Shand are the only characters on this guide considered “canon only”. Meaning that they were introduced when Star Wars was already owned by Disney. I´m looking forward to seeing how they will develop and what their role will be in the series!
There´s still a lot of information to uncover and in the future, we might take a deeper dive into it. But for now, hopefully, this article will answer some of your questions and increase your curiosity towards the Star Wars lore!
I can´t wait to see the next episodes. Will we see some familiar faces? How will Boba create new alliances while simultaneously fighting his enemies? Do you think someone will betray him? Or maybe an unexpected ally will come to his help?
The questions are endless but the only way to find out is by waiting for the next episode. I know, I also hate the waiting but it is what it is.
The Book Of Boba Fett episode 4 premieres on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.
