Guide on how to defeat Margit the Fell Omen – the first major boss encounter in Elden Ring. Includes all of his attack types and strategies!
Who is Margit and how to get to him
Margit the Fell Omen is the first major boss you will face in Elden Ring, located at the gates of Stomrveil Castle.
Margit has a bunch of different attacks and isn’t reminiscent of an early boss fight, though I don’t think he’s meant to be fought as soon as you can fight him, at least not alone.
Immediately before you pass through his fog wall, there is an NPC you can summon for additional assistance. It’s the gold marking on the floor to the right of the fog wall.
Margit Boss Fight Special Attacks and Moves
This segment of the guide will explain all of Margit’s special moves and attacks, show you how to recognize and deal with them.
This guide was written from the perspective of a ranged player. It seems he behaves a fair bit differently if you fight him with a melee weapon, though you will still find this info helpful even if you’re using a melee weapon. With all of his attacks, you really need to wait until the last second to dodge, right before he commits and fully accelerates.
Stick Leap
Margit will sometimes leap into the air and stab his stick into the ground. This attack deals a lot of damage, but it’s fairly easy to dodge. I recommend dodging backwards or to the side. His stick gets stuck in the ground for a moment, and this is one of the best times to attack him or recover. The stick leap is sometimes one of the first attacks he does.
Charge Rush
You can tell this attack is coming because Margit will raise his stick over his head and hold it there for quite a long time. If you’re already in range to attack him, he is vulnerable here for a short time, though I wouldn’t call it a full opening.
I wouldn’t risk drinking from a Flask of Tears at this point. If you aren’t ready, don’t bother capitalizing on this brief moment of vulnerability and just prepare to dodge the attack itself.
When Margit is fully charged up, he will run at you and stop right before he reaches you doing a diagonal slash. You can dodge this in any direction, but get ready because he follows it up with a quick spin in the air that ends in a horizontal slash.
I find it easiest to dodge forward or backward for both swings depending on where you want to be for your next attack.
He doesn’t have a lot of end lag after this move, though you should have enough time to drink if needed or do another attack.
Swing Up and Down
Margit can quickly swing his stick up and back down with both hits dealing a fair bit of damage. There’s a high chance that you’ll get defeated if you get hit by both of them or even one of them if you’ve gotten hit by a lighter attack or aren’t at full health.
You can evade this attack sequence by dodging each swing in any direction. There isn’t a super long opening after he does this.
Golden Sword Flurry
This attack seems to happen more frequently as his health gets lower. In my opinion, this is the hardest attack sequence to evade. It always starts with an angled stab that might miss you if you stand still (I was too afraid to try), then a half slash to his left, followed by a stab with his stick. If you manage to dodge all three, you have a standard opening to use as needed.
You have to dodge to the side for the initial stab, back or forward for the slash, and then to the side again for the final stab.
Golden Dagger
Attacks with his dagger are among his fastest, but each individual hit doesn’t deal too much damage. The dagger throws can be blocked without too much of a stamina cost.
If you’re at long range, he’ll throw 2 at you in quick succession. If you’re in the middle of an animation when he does this, you’ll likely take damage. You’ll need to dodge both daggers in quick succession. I think it’s safest to dodge to the sides, though you can sometimes avoid them just by walking the left or right. Wait to see what he does next. He often follows this up with another attack immediately. This is often one of the first attacks he does.
If you’re at mid-range, he can work a single dagger throw in with some swings of his stick. Dodge forward or backward with the swings and side with the dagger and ground stabs. He waves his hand in the air when he’s done with the combo.
Sometimes when you’re at close range, he’ll also use his dagger for two quick swings immediately following another attack. I didn’t have much success dodging this attack since it’s so sudden and fast. Thankfully, these probably won’t result in your demise unless your health is already low. He can also throw a dagger at you as he leaps away, forcing you to charge at him.
Golden Hammer
When you take away about a third of his health, he’ll materialize a giant golden hammer. Also, as the fight progresses, he seems to leave smaller openings between attack sequences.
There are 2 attacks he can do with his hammer. The first is very theatrical where he jumps into the air and tries to land on you. This attack is extremely telegraphed and one of the easiest to dodge because it involves a long-ish start-up animation where he spawns the hammer, then he leaps into the sky and hangs there for a moment, finally to come crashing down.
Dodge back as soon as he starts coming down. As soon as the dodge animation ends, you should have a nice long window to wail on him while he’s recovering. Before and after this attack is a great time to recover your HP and FP. This attack mostly replaces his stick leap.
His second hammer attack is quite a bit faster, but still on the slower end of his attacks. It’s not nearly as flashy, he just does a big swipe with it and his stick at the same time. I find it best to dodge backward from this attack.
After that, he leaps into the air and stabs his stick into the ground, which you can dodge in any direction. I’m not sure if it’s possible to dodge forwards against his hammer attack and if doing that prevents him from doing the stick leap.
Attacks involving the golden hammer are easily the most damaging moves in his arsenal and may one-shot you from full health. It is essential that you avoid these attacks.
Margit’s Tail
If you spend too much time close behind him, he’ll swing his tail at you. As a ranged build, I didn’t see him do this too often, but you’ll likely experience the wrath of his tail if you play as a melee build or try to employ the traditional strategy of staying behind him as much as possible. It seems possible to completely prevent this attack from occurring if you just avoid his back side.
Specifics of the Boss Arena
Be careful of the edges of the arena. You can fall off if you’re not careful. Do not let yourself have your back against an edge of the arena, either the castle walls or the cliff. Try to kite him from one gate to the other. As soon as you make it to one end, turn around and start backing towards the opposite end.
Also, be aware of all the garbage like the swords and spears sticking into the ground. It will stop you from moving, so try not to back into it. If you do back into some garbage, roll ASAP to destroy it, but factor this into your plan for where you’ll be rolling since it might mess with the timing a little.
What happens if you stay in Melee Range
If you remain in melee range, he seems to do individual swings often with the cane or golden dagger as opposed to these longer sequences. The attacks have pretty different timings, so you have to just learn to recognize them, unfortunately. Try to dodge them at the moment he commits or significantly accelerates his swing. Dodge forward or backward for horizontal slashes, dodge to the side for stabs and vertical slices.
A Note Regarding Ashes
Ashes (the Pokemon you can summon) make the fight a lot easier. I wasn’t using them for a long time and then the first attempt that I used them I won. It will still take some work to beat the boss and they aren’t quite as strong as summoning in the computers, but they still provide a substantial advantage.
I’ve only summoned the jellyfish so far, and it didn’t deal much damage (it might apply poison status), but it got aggro of the boss a couple of times and each instance of that represents an entire attack sequence you don’t have to dodge and more time where you get to attack the boss.
Summoning spirits from Ashes in Elden Ring gives you nice breathing space against tough boss encounters.
