This guide will show you how to get your Torrent Steed mount in Elden Ring as early as possible and how to use it in your adventures!
What or who is Torrent
Torrent is a unique and the only one (so far) mount you can use in Elden Ring. You can call it almost anywhere (more on the limitations later) and cover ground much quicker. You definitely need a mount to help you get quickly from place to place in Elden Ring’s vast open-world map.
How to get the Spectral Steed early
You can get the spectral steed for free very early on in your game. Right as you exit the tutorial dungeon and enter the first region, you will start finding Lost Grace locations.
These are small beacons of golden light that you click on and can take a moment to rest, replenish your HP, FP and Flasks among other things.
You can use Torrent to find Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears to upgrade your HP and FP Flasks.
There are a number of Site of Grace Points in The Lands Between (the name of the world of Elden Ring).
Right after you exit the tutorial, you will find the first Site of Grace. The First Step. Literally 10-15 meters out of the gates and before you speak to the first NPC.
After you click on it, follow the path that the light will show you. It guides you to your next Grace Point location that is part of the “main path”.
The second location is among the ruins of a church – the Church of Elleh, where you will meed a strange NPC. This is Kale, a merchant. We will talk about him in a whole another guide when we discuss Crafting in Elden Ring.
The third Grace Checkpoint is near a ruined village – Gatefront. This is the most logical and easy to access point where you can get your Spectral Steed.
If you have already discovered the map, it will look different. This is what the map looks like before you find the map fragment for this region. If you want to learn how to reveal the map in Elden Ring, I have just the guide for you!
I cannot yet confirm, but I strongly believe that you get your Torrent Spectral Steed mount on the third Site of Grace that you discover, regardless of where it is.
When you discover the third Grace, a new pre-rendered short cinematic will play for you. You will meet Melina for the first time. She will “offer you an accord”. You have to accept it.
“Greetings, traveller from beyond the Fog. I am Melina. I offer you an accord”
She will ask you to take her with you to the foot of the Erdtree. You have to accept. From this point forward you can summon her at a Grace Point to exchange your runes for stats.
Melina will give you a special ring. This is the item you use to call your mount. As the pre-rendered cinematic ends, you continue your dialogue with her and she will tell you this:
“[…]Ahh, another matter. I bequeath to you this ring. Use it to traverse great distances. It will summon a spectral steed named Torrent. Torrent has chosen you. Treat him with respect.”
At the end of this conversation, you will find the item in your inventory.
From this point on you have your own mount to call and use almost anywhere in the open world areas of The Lands Between.
How to summon and use the mount
To summon Torrent, the spectral steed, you will need to equip the Ring first. Open your Equipment menu.
Choose an empty slot where to place the ring. Click on that slot and then find the ring and click on it. When an item is equipped, it will be marked with a special symbol in the top left corner of its icon.
Once you have the ring mapped, you can use the appropriate shortcut to call it. You can summon Torrent almost anywhere in the open world of The Lands Between. You are not allowed to summon it in dungeons and a few special places like the first boss encounter Margit the Fell Omen.
An even better suggestion is to put the ring in your pouch. This will allow you to have an easy and quick way to summon your steed. Open the Pouch by going to the menu (right-hand-side) and put the ring there. It will have a different icon when it’s placed in the pouch).
If you play on PC, the default way to access and quickly use items from your pouch is to hold E and then press the corresponding arrow where you placed the ring.
As soon as you summon the mount, you will see a notification about your Double-Jump. Pressing Jump again while in the air after your first jump, will make the mount double-jump.
You can also force it to sprint for a bit by pressing the roll button (Space for me on PC).
Why is the Spectral Steed so important
The Torrent mount is incredibly useful in Elden Ring. While the open world is rather densely populated, the Lands Between is a really big place and you will often want to save time and explore from the back of your mount. Or sometimes you just need to get from one place to another and you don’t want to waste time.
The mount can also help you traverse the landscape not just quicker, but easier too, thanks to the Double-Jump feature.
Mounted Combat is a great advantage against certain foes. It can mitigate your obvious disadvantages against others.
You can sprint by holding the Dash button – ⭘/B/SPACE. If you need a hand mastering the Elden Ring PC and Console Controls, I have a great guide to help you learn them as quick as possible!
