This guide shows how to reach Leonine Misbegotten boss in Elden Ring and explains all fight mechanics in detail to help you beat him!

How to get to Leonine Misbegotten

Leonine Misbegotten is the boss down by the beach at the end of the Castle Morne area. Castle Morne is located at the southernmost edge of the Weeping Peninsula, which is part of the southern area of Limgrave.

Leonine is a lot easier than Margit the Fell Omen. He has far fewer mechanics, has less health, and deals less damage, so he’s a good option for your first or second major boss.

This boss does not appear to be mandatory in order to beat the game, though you have to defeat him to continue a quest that begins with Irina at the entrance to the Weeping Peninsula.

Leonine Misbegotten Boss Mechanics explained

Leonine does not appear to behave differently based on the amount of health he has.

Flurry Attacks and Identifying Openings

The boss strings together a variety of different swings and slashes. He doesn’t really have any trick moves or other types of attacks. He just leaps at you and swings his sword around. Sometimes he slashes, sometimes he slices.

He doesn’t wait too long between telegraphs, so if he’s not swinging or winding something up, you’re safe to try to attack him.

You can see in the image above, sometimes he just moves slowly and stalks you like a lion instead of attacking. This is when he’s doing a big opening. Keep your distance, and be prepared for him to leap at any moment.

Leonine’s openings are usually either super short or fairly long. I often had time to drink from 2 Flasks of Tears during a longer opening.

He’ll usually end his attack sequence with his sword hitting or getting stuck in the ground. It’s usually safe to begin attacking him once this happens.

Leonine is Evasive

You’ll have to mostly rely on your faster attacks because the boss will often dodge things with a slower travel time. I’m not sure if it applies for melee attacks, but as a ranged player, Leonine often dodged my stronger spells.

As an Astrologer, I had to mostly cast Glintstone Pebble as opposed to Great Glintstone Shard, though there were still some opportunities to use the heavier attacks when it was clear that Leonine wasn’t going to dodge and it wasn’t necessary to use Swift Glintstone Shard either if you have those spells yet.

If Leonine does dodge your attack, it’s pointless to keep trying to do the same attack because he’ll just dodge it again. You can also see the trails of glowing red eyes in the picture above, I’ll talk about those later.

How to deal with Leonin’s Speed

The boss is capable of charging you with most of their attacks. Don’t think it’s safe to drink from your Flasks of Tears or do a ranged attack just because you’re at range. Wait until it’s clear that Leonine isn’t doing anything before doing anything at range.

You can cut it pretty close by timing your dodges, so it’s better to be late than early which means you have a bit more time than you might think if you have to take a drink of the Crimson Tears.

He’s pretty far into his leap at this point, and I didn’t dodge until he had basically hit the ground and still managed to evade the attack.

Beware of the Headstones

Stay away from the various headstones throughout the arena. They won’t get destroyed by rolling through them like most other debris, so you can get cornered by the boss without a safe direction to roll if you’re not careful.

Don’t let this happen (image above). I got whacked by 2 of his swings because I went here.
See? I evaded the perilous headstones here.

Leonine’s Rage Mode

Leonine will occasionally go into a rage mode where he’ll have red glowing eyes. It’s not clear what this does, though it might be a reference to the unique skill from the weapon he drops called Oath of Vengeance, which raises all attributes and poise for a period of time. If this is the case, you really don’t want to get hit while their eyes are glowing because you may take more damage and be less capable of interrupting their attacks.

Reward for defeating Leonine Misbegotten

Leonine Misbegotten gives you 3800 Runes and drops the Grafted Blade Greatsword. It requires 40 Strength and 14 Dexterity. The sword has its unique Ash of War: Oath of Vengeance.

If you are looking for a Game of Thrones reference in Elden Ring, this could be a candidate, though the sword has its own lore and reasons to look and behave as it does in Elden Ring.
