This guide explains how to respec in Elden Ring, called Rebirth in thegame, where is the NPC that can reset your stats and allow you to redistribute them again and what restrictions are in place when you use the Rebirth feature.
This guide will explain how to reassign all of the Attribute Points you’ve earned from spending Runes to level up. Throughout this guide, I will refer to reassigning Attribute Points as respeccing. In-game it is called “Rebirth”.
Where is the respec NPC in Elden Ring
Respeccing in Elden Ring is a bit more accessible than it’s been in past FromSoftware games.
To gain the ability to respec in Elden Ring, you must defeat Rennala, the Full Moon Queen, the final boss of the Academy of Raya Lucaria in Liurnia. After that, you can visit her to respec your stats by using the Rebirth option in her menu.
How to reach the Academy of Raya Lucaria
The Academy of Raya Lucaria is the second Legacy Dungeon in Elden Ring. It’s ‘located in the middle Liurnia. The Academy is sealed by magic.
To enter, you must obtain a Glintstone Key. If you’ve gone to the South Entrance, you’ll see a corpse with a poorly drawn map on it. This map details the location of a Glintstone Key:
If you just want a hint, I recommend taking a look at that map, and examining the relative position of the major landmarks.
Here is the actual location:
I do not recommend having a whole lot of Runes on your person when you head over there. After you have obtained the key, return to the main gate of the Academy and you will be able to enter.
Progress through the Academy until you reach the final boss Rennala and defeat her to unlock the ability to respec and reset your stats.
Restrictions on Respeccing in Elden Ring
Similar to the Dark Souls franchise, respeccing is limited in Elden Ring. You can’t do it whenever you want and as many times as you want.
Larval Tears
Each time you respec, you have to give Rennala a Larval Tear – a consumable that is lost upon using it.
Larval Tears are quite rare, so there’s only a finite number of times you can respec per playthrough. Many larval tears drop from mini bosses disguised as weak or normal soldier enemies.
This is kind of like the giant exploding black goo monsters from Dark Souls 3, but there doesn’t appear to be any indication that an enemy is disguised in Elden Ring like there was in Dark Souls 3.
Minimum Base Stats
You can’t set any stat to be lower than its starting value for the class you picked when you created the player.
For example, Astrologers start out with 7 Faith, so when you spend a Larval Tear to rebirth yourself, you can’t go below 7 Faith as an Astrologer. The image below shows a respec screen for a Hero starter class.
Respeccing only allows you to reallocate the Attribute Points that you have allocated yourself.
Respeccing Tips
Even if you’re generally happy with your build, there’s a good chance you’ve spent a few points on stats you don’t need. There are enough Larval Tears to allow you to do this many times.
Consider Diminishing Returns
Diminishing returns are a thing in Elden Ring. Not every point assigned to a given stat provides the same benefit. For example, past 50 Endurance, you start getting 0 points of extra Stamina for some levels and past 60 Endurance, you start getting much less of an increase to your Equip Load per point.
A safe rule of thumb is to stop at 60 for any stat except for your main scaling one and then you can go up to 80 with your primary scaling stat.
Don’t Waste Points
Clarify your build. Usually there are 1-2 things you really want to specialize in. Put the rest at their minimum.
For example, as an Astrologer, my primary focus is on casting Sorceries, so I want my Intelligence and Mind to be very high, but I do use a sword in the other hand (that has some Int scaling), so I only have enough Strength and Dexterity to be able to wield it effectively, I don’t put any extra points into Strength or Dexterity.
Mix Things Up
Don’t be afraid to completely change your build. The actual starting stats don’t actually differ too much between the classes. The bigger difference comes from the starting items.
If you’re just not having fun or pick up some cool weapon you want to try, it’s completely okay to create a completely different build.
Where to find Larval Tears in Elden Ring
There are 18 Larval Tears scattered across the Lands Between, allowing you to respec up to 18 times per playthrough. This limit is considerably higher than it has been in past From Software games where it’s been as high as 5 per playthrough or sometimes not even being possible to respec at all.
