Marvel Animated had a lot of announcements at the SDCC 2022 with Marvel’s What If, Spiderman: Freshman year and X-men ’97 taking the lead!

Marvel’s What If returns for Season 2 in 2023

At the SDCC, Marvel has revealed the show Marvel’s What If..? season two will return in 2023. The animated TV show has received much critical acclaim during its’ first season with strong voice acting by the likes of the late Chadwick Boseman, Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) and many many more from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What If was nominated for three Emmy Nominations after its’ first season. One for Outstanding Animated Program (for the episode “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?”) and for the voice performances of both Jeffrey Wright (as The Watcher) and the late Chadwick Boseman (as T’Challa).

The second season was announced when The Watcher recruited The Guardians of the Multiverse and said to “meet new heroes and explore more strange new worlds in the MCU’s ever-expanding Multiverse”.

Marvel also announced that What If also third season renewal ahead of the season two premiere.

The trailer was released at the SDCC 2022 event and features the following characters: Captain Carter and HYDRA Stomper Steve Rogers, Valkyrie, Korg and Hela, Shang-Chi, Scarlet Witch and other characters.

Charlie Cox will voice Daredevil in Marvel Animated Spiderman

Marvel’s upcoming animated series Spiderman: Freshman year will have none other than Daredevil himself voiced by Charlie Cox. Cox was the actor of the Netflix series that lasted three seasons before it was canceled.

Despite the show not premiering until 2024, it has already been renewed for a second season with the invigorating name Spider-Man: Sophomore Year. Such creativity from the creative team eh?

Spiderman: Freshman year is the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Peter Parker becoming Spiderman. The stories all pre-date the Captain America: Civil War movie “with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.”

Spiderman’s vast rogue gallery will be there to make life hard and lessons learned valuable. Villains featured will be Harry Osborn, Scorpion, Unicorn, Rhino, Tarantula, Doctor Octopus and Speed Demon. At least one ally will make his MCU debut and that’s fan-favorite Amadeus Cho.

The X-men ’97 will debut in fall 2023

The X-men Animated series will make a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and pick up where it left off back in 1997.

The X-men animated series was highly successful on Saturday morning and even rivaled the all-time classic Batman: The Animated Series. The show filmed classics such as The Dark Phoenix Saga and Days of Future Past but left many many classics untouched. Like the era of Magneto after Professor Xavier left. Magneto acted as the Headmaster of  The Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. Which hopefully sees roles for Havoc, Malice / Polaris and the Marauders as well as the introduction of Gambit during the Mutant Massacre saga.

Footage revealed at the SDCC showed the following team:

Gambit, Wolverine, Jubilee, Cyclops, Storm (with her classic Mohawk look) Jean Grey and Beast. Magneto is shown in his X-men costume which features classic purle / magenta sleeveless tunic and purple gloves. The helmet was missing during that era of the X-men comics so it only makes sense that it is missing here as well.

This is all good news as The X-men are poised to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Professor Xavier making his debut in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, albeit in an alternate universe and he got killed. But still, the first X-men we saw in the MCU and it is fitting that it is the founder of the X-men.

X-men fans will recognize the Magneto costume as it is the Magneto costume where he tried to be the good guy and is exonerated from his criminal past. But The X-men are still very suspicious of their archenemy and it causes tensions in the team. Why can’t things ever go the way they are supposed to eh?

While the show will likely be connected, many fans and pundits are wondering when the mutants will make their live-action debut. Ever since Marvel bought Fox Movies, fans have been wondering where The X-men are and the new series may just may be an appetizer.

The show will make its’ debut on Disneyplus in 2023.
