Over the past months, Disney and Lucasfilm have released behind-the-scenes documentaries of different Star Wars media projects. Some about older stuff and others about the most recent series, and now it’s the turn of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series!
From the moment of its announcement at D23 2019, we all rejoiced about the return of Obi-Wan Kenobi to play the sassiest Jedi in the galaxy.
It was supposed to originally be a movie but after the Han Solo movie the plans changed and it evolve into a six-episode series. This year, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was finally released. If you have missed my Obi-Wan Kenobi Episodes Reviews, you can catch up now.
And now, just like they did with The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett; Disney is offering a behind-the-scenes documentary. Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return is releasing on September 8th, 2022 as part of the Disney Plus Day celebration.
The behind-the-scenes documentaries about The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett were good but personally, I think this one is going to be way more exciting. As a kid who grew up watching The Clone Wars, Anakin and Obi-Wan are a huge part of what really got me invested in Star Wars.
Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi represent what Han, Luke, Leia, and Chewie were for the first generations that experienced Star Wars.
Ewan McGregor has stated multiple times how hard it was when the prequels were released. The critics were very harsh with the story, the cast, the visual effects, and pretty much everything.
Many years had to pass before hearing good feedback for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and it comes mostly from the fans that were kids when the movies were released.
I think we’re going to see very touching moments of the whole process. Hayden and Ewan’s reunion, when both of them put on their respective costumes and lots of funny stories about old and recent times.
I’m hoping that we also get to hear their takes on how Star Wars has evolved over the years and most importantly, how their characters have changed from the last time they met each other. I know that we can infer and learn a lot about this by reading comics and books but I always find it special when the actors themselves give their honest thoughts about their characters.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series’ final result was possible thanks to Deborah Chow, I’m not someone who’s usually interested in hearing a director’s point of view but this time I’m really curious about what she has to say.
It is worth noting that so far, this is the only live-action series directed in its entirety by one director. The Book of Boba Fett, both seasons of The Mandalorian, and the upcoming Andor series have multiple directors. I wonder if this was a one-time approach or if it’s something that we can expect in future releases.
I hope the documentary answers most of our questions and give us a good glimpse of how the whole series came to be. You can watch the trailer here.
If you’re interested in watching more behind-the-scenes content here’s every Star Wars documentary currently available in Disney Plus:
“Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy” is a documentary that was first released in 2004. In just two and a half hours it resumes how the most successful space opera was made. It is outstanding to see how far it has all come since the pre-production stage of A New Hope.
“Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett” is a short twenty-two-minute documentary that celebrates and explores the origins of the most infamous Bounty Hunter in Star Wars. His concept, evolution, and the surprising number of fans that came to love this mysterious character are some of the discussed topics.
“Disney Gallery/ Star Wars: The Mandalorian” is an eight-episode documentary that explores different facets of the first live-action Star Wars series. It includes many interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and multiple conversations between the producers and the staff.

“Light & Magic” is a six-episode documentary that shows the conception of Industrial Light & Magic. A company that George Lucas founded in 1975 because no one could do the visual effects that he wanted for the first Star Wars movie.
This is the story of how this small company became an industry leader with the talent and creativity of its amazing crew and how George Lucas’ company would change the world of filmmaking.
