She-Hulk episode two was about loss and starting anew. Crossing ethical boundaries and staying within certain boundaries. As well as a new job and dealing with the fallout of being outed as the new Hulk. It was a fun episode, albeit a bit short with it being 27 minutes and two minutes of that were after credits.
She-Hulk: Superhuman Law
She-Hulk is not sure how to deal with her newfound fame after she outed herself trying to save the people in court. After that, the media frenzy started and everybody wanted a piece of the new She-Hulk.
Jennifer got invited to a bar where people asked her to change into the She-Hulk so they could see her up close and personal. Ofcourse, as we saw in the previous episode, the alcohol didn’t do much because of her changed metabolism. It did to Nikki however.
When Jennifer’s boss appears to have a chat with her, he asks her to change from She-Hulk to Jennifer as he is the bearer of bad news. A completely drunk Jennifer appears after the transformation.
Apparently, her outing as the She-Hulk also cost her her victory despite winning the case. The case was called a mistrial because her performance influenced the jury according to the opposing party. Thus Jennifer Walters lost the case and on top of that, she also got fired.
Wandering aimlessly
Jen has completely lost it and for the first time, she is out of a job. She is afraid of her parents’ reaction when she is invited over for dinner. However, her parents are way too happy with her recent outing as She-Hulk and hope that she gets her act together soon.
She gets a call from Holden Holliway of GLK&H, the same firm that called for a mistrial and got Jennifer fired.
She asks Holliway why and he explains the following: you won a case against us and thus we would like to offer you a chance to head a newly formed division called Superhuman Law.
It essentially helps out superheroes who have caused significant damage while protecting them from bad guys. Jennifer says yes before even thinking about the rest of the offer. She has only one condition: She gets to pick her own paralegal, who ofcourse is Nikki.
What to wear to work on your first day
So Jennifer Walters goes to work under the assumption that they hired Jen and not She-Hulk. Jen meets her new boss who immediately asks her why she’s coming to work as Jennifer Walters when they hired She-Hulk.
After a minor protest Jen reluctantly changes into the She-Hulk and complains about getting a second wardrobe to Nikki. Nikki replies with: With the kind of money you make, you can easily afford it. Nikki feels at home immediately in her new amazingly huge office and never wants to leave.
Jen’s first client is none other than Emil Blonsky, also known as The Abonimation. The Abonimation was main protagonist in the first Hulk movie featuring Edward Norton.
Jen has ethical issues because of The Hulk / Bruce Banner and them fighting. But Emil is trying really hard to rehabilitate himself. He has been sending out Haiku’s to his many victims. Even to Bruce. It was a sign that he has rehabilitated himself.
After a call Bruce, confirms that he’s got a nice letter from Emil to make up and that she should totally go for it. And Jen does. She represents Blonsky who inevitably escapes his prison and goes on a rampage in a fight club as The Abonimation. The fight club looks a lot like the one from Shang-Chi and the 10 rings. And sources have confirmed that it is the club where Shang-Chi has fought.
The big bad reveal
The show seems to be heading towards the big bad reveal with the Abonimation as a plot device. It looks like the big bad is Holden Holliway who is setting up some sort of scheme to make life hard for She-Hulk.
He crosses ethical boundaries by calling her win a mistrial because of the She-Hulk appearance. Citing the following reason: Jennifer’s superpowered status will only taint juries one way or another, as evidenced by the case she was poised to win last week being nullified by a declaration of a mistrial. Justice has always been blind so, the reason doesn’t make much sense.
Is it just me or did Nikki get comfortable way too quick in her new office? I would be very happy with a huge office like that and a view like that but Nikki, didn’t even blink an eye. With the impressive new setting, do you think Nikki will eventually turn on Jennifer if Holden Holliway turns out to be the big bad?
Also what happened to Titania? Actress Jameela Jamil was announced with so many drumrolls that it is strange that she is not being mentioned anywhere but if Jennifer’s new employer also has Titania as their client then I can see a rogue gallery forming right there.
She-Hulk Easter eggs and teases
The episode was not just any episode. Ever since the big takeover of Fox, fans have wondered when we will see The X-men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Of course, we saw Professor Xavier in Doctor Strange: Multiuniverse of Madness. In this episode we have a mention of Wolverine and finally that big statue in the ocean from the Eternals gets addressed. It seems unrelated but it connects everything.
The encircled titles read the following: Man fights with metal claws in bar brawl and the second reads: Why is there a giant statue of a man sticking out of the ocean?
World War Hulk?
The biggest of the week ofcourse is Bruce Banner / Hulk on the Sakarian spaceship that drove Jennifer and him off the road in the first episode. The Sakaar have picked him up and that can only mean that we will get the movie that everyone has been dreaming of: World War Hulk. For those who don’t know, Sakaar was the planet Thor found Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok.
World War Hulk is one of the modern classics in recent comicbook history where The Hulk crashes on the planet Sakaar and fights as a Gladiator while filled with rage because the Illuminati, consisting of very prominent members of earth’s superheroes, caused the death of his pregnant wife.
But was She-Hulk in fact setting up World War Hulk? Like I mentioned last week; it is impossibly expensive to have Mark Ruffalo in every She-Hulk episode. And I thought he was just going to be there for one episode. It turned out to be 1.5 episodes because the tiny cameo that sets up a major storyline counts as half.
In an interview with TVline, She-Hulk head writer Jessica Gao has the following to say about that:
“A big part of it is [Mark] did what he came to do on the show, and we wanted to make sure that people knew, ‘Don’t expect him to be in every episode from here on out.’
“But also,” Gao added, “I think it kind of opens up the possibility if Marvel chooses to, to do something with that, to pick up that story. If they wanted.”
Added to it: “Well, all I’ll say is, you know, he spent a lot of time off-planet as we saw in Thor: Ragnarok. And, we only got to see a little tiny bit of what his life was like when he was on that planet.”
We can only hope for a Hulk standalone movie. Mark Ruffalo has said that he is ready to rumble if that will indeed happen.
Mark Linn-Baker
The biggest surprise and easter egg for me was the casting of Mark Linn-Baker as Jennifer’s father. It is my favorite casting so far of a supporting character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When I grew up one of my favorite TV shows was Perfect Strangers. It revolved around Balki Bartokomous from the island of Mypos who goes to live in the states with his cousin Larry, played by Mark Linn-Baker.
The show was hilarious comedy and it was the breakthrough role for both Bronson Pinchot and Mark Linn-Baker. The show would last for seven seasons and it is still one of my favorite comedies ever even if the show didn’t stand the test of time.
Thanks Marvel for this epic casting! So who else would like to see the She-Hulk cast do the dance of joy?
