She-Hulk episode 5 was all about She-Hulk’s identity and identity theft. There wasn’t much action like we had last week with the gargoyles in the theatre but there was action in court.
Titania trademarks She-Hulk
As we saw last week when the episode ended: Jennifer Walters got subpoenaed for misusing the name She-Hulk.
Titania, the woman we saw fly against the wall in the first episode, took her sweet revenge and trademarked the She-Hulk name. Under that name, she basically put out an entire cosmetics line. The cosmetics consisted of shampoos, perfumes, creams, and so forth.
And Titania took over through media, Titania’s job is that of influencer. With her advertisements on the air, on billboards, on social media, and on traditional media.
It was crazy, you couldn’t turn on the TV / Radio or go for a drive to work without being confronted by the She-Hulk brand.
Jennifer and Nicki visit an event hosted by Titania. Jennifer and Nicki want to confront Titania about what she is doing with She-Hulk’s brand. Instead, Titania annoys Jennifer with her answers.
Titania taunts Jennifer by calling her a little girl and doesn’t back down. So instead Jennifer takes the case to court because she feels that the trademark dishonors her identity.
The Judge leans toward Titania
Jennifer hires a lawyer, named Mallory Book, who basically tells her that she should have trademarked the name from the get-go so she would have avoided all of the stuff she has coming at her in this episode.
She takes Titania to court but of course, Titania has her own defense and shows the judge all of the instances where Jennifer disassociates and distances herself from the She-Hulk name.
And the judge is leaning towards Titania unless Jennifer can prove that she has done something to establish a pattern where she embraces the She-Hulk name and associates with it.
For the life of her she can’t figure out what that could actually be during recess. But remember the dates Jennifer had as Jennifer and She-Hulk? And remember when Jennifer decided to make a dating profile as She-Hulk?
Well so did Jennifer whilst talking to Nicki. The dating profile shows that Jennifer does like to be the She-Hulk and calls herself that. It establishes a pattern.
Jennifer’s lawyer, Mallory, also calls up four witnesses; the guys who dated She-Hulk in the previous episode. They all testify that Jennifer referred to herself as “She-Hulk”.
That and a screenshot of the dating profile of She-Hulk are enough evidence for the judge to rule in Jennifer’s favor.
Sometimes the clothes do make the woman
Ever since Jennifer started to work as a lawyer for her new firm and does that as She-Hulk, she looks like a buffed football player with a tie. Or when she is walking around like Jennifer in that oversized jacket, she looks like the mini version of Don Johnson’s Sonny Crockett and thus completely ridiculous.
Pugh and Nicki come up with the idea to get a better wardrobe for Jennifer. One that she can wear as She-Hulk and Jennifer. They visit a secret place with a unique niche: a tailor who only makes costumes for superheroes!
They visit the coffee shop that acts as the secret tailor’s front. And after pleading and begging and even telling that their client is an Avenger, the tailor, named Luke, finally lets Pugh and Nicki in.
And when they bring Jennifer in, Luke wants to send them all away and even held their argument against them: “You said she was an Avenger!” which was defended with: “She will be and she is the Hulk’s cousin!” “By blood?” “Yes, by blood!”. Which was hilarious.
They took her measures and when Jennifer comes back she tries on her new attire. Except we won’t see it until one of the next episodes.
The last scene of the show was promising. The box contained a mask of a superhero that has been teased since the start of the show: It was the mask of Daredevil! Will we finally see him in his new costume and ready to go? I hope so. We have seen Matt Murdock in the Spider-man movie but not in his Daredevil costume.
Director Anu Vella had this to say about the Daredevil mask in the She-Hulk episode:
“I was surprised!” Valia told TVLine. “But it was very fun. When I saw that in the script, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is a lot of responsibility!’ But it was very fun.”
Valia also said that “Yeah,” like many Marvel fans upon seeing recent trailers, she was a bit taken aback to see the show going with the yellow-and-red get-up for Daredevil aka Matt Murdock (to again be played by Charlie Cox) — but she would/could not elaborate on the literal costume change, saying, “I’m afraid to get into too much….”
She-Hulk is establishing a lot but where will it lead to?
So since the start of the show, we have seen Jennifer lose her temper, and lose her patience. Having trouble with her dating life e.g. guys are only interested in her when she is the She-Hulk while she has so much more to offer.
This week we saw her sloppier side: not registering her She-Hulk name as a trademark and she almost got screwed over by Titania.
The question is: Where will all this lead to? Will we see the sensational She-Hulk in the upcoming movies using any of these established traits?
Personally, I am sold! This character is what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has needed for a very long time. The humor and the freshness of the character.
Plus breaking that fourth wall in almost every episode; I would love to see that in an Avengers movie. Preferably one where they have to fight Kang the Conqueror.
Daredevil Reborn, like the old but with a new suit?
Daredevil will make an appearance or maybe multiple ones in the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law TV show on Disney Plus. This marks the return of the iconic Marvel character after we saw him in the Spider-man movie. But the movie appearance was short and it was Matt Murdock, not his superhero alter-ego.
After the Netflix show was canceled, many people were left to wonder what would happen. Most people were fans of the portrayal by Charlie Cox and hoped that at least he would be canonized for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And now he is.
Judging by the trailer of the next episode, we can see Daredevil in his yellow and red suit. Much akin to his late father’s final outfit before taking that final beating in the boxing ring that cost him his life.
Jack Murdock, Matt’s father, would rather die instead of throw the match for a then young and upcoming crimelord Wilson Fisk, The Kingpin.
In the final episode of The Defenders on Netflix, Matt Murdock survives an almost fatal fight but the cost of it is high and Matt is severely injured. He is taken care of by, unknowingly, his mother Maggie.
After his recovery, Daredevil finds out that someone has been posing as him and used his iconic red costume to wreak havoc. So it seems to me that the reason is to distance himself from the red costume to continue with the yellow and red. Not just to honor his father but to show people that they have been fooled by someone in his red costume.
