She-Hulk and Daredevil

She-Hulk Episode 8 Review and Breakdown

Manfred by Manfred|

After weeks of teasing, this week’s She-Hulk episode finally has the showdown we never asked for: Leapfrog vs a bunch of petty criminals!

These boots are made for walking

Yes, I wasn’t kidding. This is the She-Hulk episode where the group of C-listers expands; this week it is Leapfrog. Leapfrog shows up to stop a petty theft of a TV store robbery.

He hilariously fails and tries to get away using his special suit skill: The jet boots! Unfortunately, the boots don’t work, and Leapfrog’s feet and shins now have third-degree burns.

She-Hulk Episode 8 Review - Leapfrog appears

And since Eugene Patillio, the secret identity paid big money for the boots, he hires a lawyer to get his money back and then some. And the lawyer is none other than our very own She-Hulk. And there is a conflict of interest. The person who bought the suit is none other than Luke, the tailor who made Jennifer’s outfits.

So She-Hulk tries to decline the case but the head of the law firm she works for insists that she takes it. With a heavy heart, she enters Luke’s shop to give him the bad news. And Luke immediately tears her gala dress for “Female Lawyer of the Year” apart and bans her out of her shop. Jennifer is torn.

Leap Frog is ofcourse none other than Eugene Patillio, the kid who wanted to be Spider-man’s best friend and sidekick. He was created by two legends J.M. DeMatteis and Kerry Gammil and made his first appearance in Marvel Team-Up #121 (June 1982).

The blind stares of a million pairs of eyes

When She-Hulk makes it to court, she is still upset that Luke denied her her dress, she even pre-paid for it and Luke destroying it right in front of her very eyes angered her. As they say, hell hath no greater fury than a woman scorned. So when she tells Eugene that he can start making plans because he is about to get very rich, it is out of spite.

In previous episodes, we saw She-Hulk win cases with ease. If it wasn’t her then it was her law firm that won cases. They never reported a loss in all the episodes that aired that had a lawsuit in them. And as a viewer, you grow accustomed to the fact that Jenn always wins.

But then this guy from Hell’s Kitchen runs into the court and he’s late because he couldn’t find a parking spot. But wait a minute…this guy’s blind and his name is Matt Murdock… THE Matt Murdock, the one that has been teased ever since the official trailer was released.

She-Hulk Episode 8 Review

Matt is Luke’s lawyer. Matt owed Luke one after Luke fixed his costume as we saw in the previous episode. And Matt takes Jennifer to school. Every argument Jennifer put forward was won by Matt’s arguments and on top of that, the boots reeked of jet fuel. Luke specifically said what fuel to use when you want to use the rocket boots that came with the suit. So Jennifer got her green booty kicked big time.

I was so happy to see Matt Murdock again. And his first appearance in court in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a funny one too. This version of Matt Murdock is different from the Netflix version. The Netflix version was pretty dark and grim. This version is lighthearted and spirited.

I do wonder if we will get reintroduced to Karen and Foggy. But we’ll see as the road of Daredevil / Matt Murdock is still quite a few movies and TV shows long before his own show airs.

She-Hulk drowns her sorrows

Well, they didn’t exactly meet up at the bar but rather by coincidence. After the case, Jennifer went to get a drink after a stressful day with that huge loss. She is given a drink by someone and it’s Matt Murdock who came to celebrate.

The two immediately hit it off. There was so much chemistry that even Breaking Bad’s Walter White would be like: Here, you cook!

She-Hulk Episode 8 Review - Matt and Jennifet in a bar

And I am really rooting for Jennifer here. After so many failures in the love department, Matt feels like a gift. But before they can continue, Jennifer receives a text from her client Eugene. She tries to ignore it but is quickly put in place because as a lawyer from such a high-profile client you are available for their legal needs 24/7.

She chases Eugene who appears to be in danger. But then there is Daredevil as well. And he is trying to stop the car Eugene is in. Who is right and who is wrong?

The fast and the curious

While the heroes fight each other on top of the parking garage, the car Eugene is in is getting away. Jennifer is trying to let him get away and fights Daredevil. Cars are thrown, and parkour runs full stop but it isn’t until Jennifer smashes her hands together that incapacitates Daredevil. She pulls off the mask and sees Matt. Jennifer can’t believe her eyes and wonders if he is really blind.

She-Hulk unmasks Daredevil

To be fair, I was surprised as well that She-Hulk managed to pull off Daredevil’s mask just like that and find out his true identity.

Matt explains that Eugene kidnapped Luke and is trying to take him to his lair. Jennifer, who wants to get back in Luke’s good graces but also because she is a good-hearted person joins Matt in his quest to free Luke.

The fight ensues and it was stealth by Daredevil vs blunt moves from She-Hulk smashes.

And eventually, the two of them pull it off and free Luke from Eugene. As a thank you, Luke fixed Jennifer’s dress for her gala.

As I wrote before, Jennifer and Matt are a match and the two of them go home and spend the night together. I hope it is more than just a one-night stand and that the two will actually become an item.

We haven’t seen many on-screen romances like that. I can only think of Ant-man and Wasp, Tony Stark and Pepper Pots, and MJ and Peter. But all of them already were friends or involved with each other before that turned into a relationship. Matt and Jennifer should be more than just a one-night stand.

She-Hulk is the female lawyer of the year

It’s gala night and Jenn is dressed beautifully, and so are Nikkie and Jenn’s parents. Apparently, Jenn isn’t the only female lawyer who won. She and a few other women are called to the stage and one by one they try to explain what it is like to be a female lawyer. It is such a cliche.

She-Hulk wins Female Lawyer of the Year

When the mic is passed to Jennifer, the big TV screen is hacked by Intelligencia, the conspiracy theory forum. They have mobilized and are trying to put Jennifer down.

They show images and slander her in every way possible. The slander goes as follows: Jennifer stole the Hulk’s blood and parts of a formula appear. It could be anything but will most likely be some fantasy formula stuff. Then they show a video where Jennifer is having sex with Josh and call Jenn a slut.

This is the first time we see Jennifer in a fit of rage. A masked man who is a henchman is trying to run away but Jennifer smashes a wall to get him before she is held at gunpoint by a police unit. And I think that the police unit is the Hulkbuster unit.

The season finale is next week and I wonder who is behind Intelligencia.

Daredevil, the man without fear

I mentioned earlier in my article that the Daredevil we met in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was different from the dark and grim take of the Netflix Daredevil show. This Daredevil has a lot of comedy as both Daredevil and Matt Murdock.

Daredevil was created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett. When Daredevil was first published in April 1964, he was meant to be a funny character. He was meant to be more like Spider-man. Kind of like a backup. Like Batman and Arrow.

The Arrow was created to be a backup in case a Batman deadline was missed, DC would just publish an Arrow comic. The same goes for Daredevil, he was supposed to be a stand-in for Spider-man. So he was equally as funny so that readers could just slide from one comic to the other.

She-Hulk and Matt Murdock in court

While I agree with the character changes in the MCU and making him look more like the early version of the character, I do find that the changes are too big and too drastic all at once.

The Daredevil from Netflix was clearly inspired by the Frank Miller run from the 1980s when comics were dark and grim post-Silver Age.

Comics post-Silver Age was a consequence of the classic Spider-man comic “The Night Gwen Stacy died“. After that event, comics turned darker and grimmer. Not just Marvel Comics but DC Comics too.

Daredevil going back to being more lighthearted and comedic is a good move and fits in the trend of the MCU. Movies like Thor: Ragnarok and Love and Thunder are comedies. So are the Guardians of the Galaxies movies.

But I do hope that Marvel balances the Daredevil character better. The complaint from fans and pundits is that Thor’s high-paced comedy is too much for viewers.

I agree with that. When you look at a character like Thor in the MCU, you see that he is very smart. He wins battles in different realms so he is a great strategist, speaks Groot, and he is the founder of New Asgard. He is also very good with technology and knows a lot about history. Yet, all we see is the funny side of Thor. The smart side is almost completely neglected.

I hope that we do keep seeing the smarter side of Matt Murdock, while he was created to be funny, he’s also a lawyer who takes on big cases with huge social themes and I hope that Marvel will keep that in mind going forward, that it is not always good for a laugh but also one that fights for justice using his Law degree as well as his suit.
