She-Hulk broke the 4th wall and created a whole new 4th Wall Plus in the season finale of She-Hulk: Attorney at law!
She-Hulk no more
In the last episode, we saw that She-Hulk lost her temper after Intelligencia hacked the gala She-Hulk attended to receive the much-acclaimed award “Female Lawyer of the year”. They slandered her with everything they got. Made her look bad at every turn and She-Hulk paid the price.
She lost her temper in front of the world and was jailed for it. I have no idea how long she was in jail but my guess was it was about a day.
The best part was the summary before she woke up in the same jail that held Emil Blonsky in previous episodes.
The entire style of the dream was done in the late 1970s / 1980s when Billy Bixby played David Bruce Banner and Lou Ferrigno was the Hulk. It was really really beautiful.
The sequence ended with Jennifer waking up with the text: “The Savage She-Hulk” which is a reference to the comic book series that ran from February 1980 – February 1982. I wish Marvel did more of those stints.
Jennifer is allowed to go but only if she never transforms into the She-Hulk again. She’s given the same inhibitor as the Abomination in earlier episodes.
Moving back in with the parents
There’s no way that moving in with your parents, is a sign that your life is right on track. There’s no way that you could fake this, even. Yeah, things are going great. – Jerry Seinfeld
And that’s exactly what happened to Jennifer. She’s had it all: She had a great guy, OK, well he was a con man. She had a great job that paid really well so nowhere in her life plan it said: Let’s move back in with the parents.
But it happened anyway. After she got out of jail, Jennifer was fired. She was completely defamed on television so getting a new job is going to be really hard. Her parents offer to move back in to cut costs and so it happened: Jennifer is back home.
It was fun to watch how Jennifer gets bossed around a bit and how her mother showed pics of her twerking in college. She sends the video of that to Nikkie.
While at home Jennifer investigates the Intelligencia website. Apparently, ownership goes through a couple of proxies known as shell companies and they all fall outside of United States jurisdiction. So she hit a dead end.
But remember that video her mum sent to Nikkie? Nikkie uploads the video to the Intelligencia website, the forum that has a thing against She-Hulk.
My first thought was: oh no, the big bad was in plain sight? It was Nikkie. But I am glad I was wrong. It turned out that Nikkie used the video as bait. Since Jennifer wasn’t making progress, Nikkie took matters into her own hands and received an invite from the Hulkking.
The video was such a good find that Nikkie gets an invite and is addressed as “Bro”. They think Nikkie is a guy so Pug is recruited by Pug to go to a top-secret location.
With a little help from my friends
Jennifer was having a hard time. It’s not just the loss of her job but also having to move back in with her parent. The walls are closing in so it was time to make a call to Emil Blonsky whose meditational retreat was always open for Jennifer.
She made the phone call but cell service was terribad at the retreat as we saw in the previous episode. So she decided to go unannounced.
When she was there she was welcomed by the people and asked where Emil is. She was told that Emil is at a private event where he is the main speaker.
Jen, who really wanted to talk to Emil, started looking around at the retreat and when she finally found him, he was in his Abomination form, speaking to people from Intelligencia and the owner of the forum: Todd Phelps, the creep who Jen stood up in the dating episode.
Phelps was a total creep in the dating episode. Referring to Jen as a specimen. I thought he was objectifying her and if so then that was the complete epitome of that. And that website of Intelligencia didn’t show up until Jen rejected him.
So I guess having money and being spoiled makes you do weird things like setting up Intelligencia and trying to control aspects of Jen’s life like sending out Josh to ‘date’ her and it is eventually Josh who stole her blood to see how she becomes She-Hulk.
Phelps managed to use the blood to make something of a serum that makes him eh…something green. I wouldn’t say a Hulk but something.
And then it’s a fight on stage. Phelps was whatever greenie he was, Abomination was getting ready for a fight and we saw Hulk smashing the floor after spending a long time away in space.
We will never know who will win this fight because right after that the best TV I have watched in ages starts.
Kevin can go F himself
No, this is not a reference to the TV show but basically, the writers wrote such a predictable story that all plotlines pointed toward that ending. What happens next is something I can only describe as breaking that 4th Wall Plus.
We saw Jennifer / She-Hulk talk to the audience while looking at the camera, which is known as “Breaking the 4th Wall”. And it was amazing.
Instead of accepting the outcome of the season finale, She-Hulk visited the soundstages a movie lot. She looked for the writers room that wrote the super predictable ending.
She-Hulk was basically told that this is what needs to happen in any comic book movie. But She-Hulk isn’t satisfied with that explanation.
And I agree, the writers portrayed in the room are way too dogmatic. Comic books are so versatile that creativity begins and ends with the writers, not dogmatic rules for comic books.
So she decided to move up and looked for the head honcho of Marvel Studios. After encountering security officers she finally reached Kevin’s office.
But Kevin is a droid…? What?
The Kevin we expected to see, Kevin Feige, isn’t in the office and we see a droid with a camera that uses an algorithm to determine what show gets what storyline and how it ends.
And that is how dogmas stay in place. Have a super advanced droid run the show. Kevin stands for Knowledge Enhanced Visual Interconnectivity Nexus.
Together with Jennifer, who was urged to transform off-screen to save money, Kevin came up with a new ending:
Phelps doesn’t change into whatever greenie he is. Abomination is back in jail for breaking parole. Daredevil is back and introduced to the parents and the biggest reveal is The Hulk introducing his son Skaar.
In the mid-credits scene, we see Wong break Emil Blonsky out of his cell to live at Kamar-Taj.
Skaar, cousin of She-Hulk
With the son of Hulk, I think we are slowly but surely going to say goodbye to the founding members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it is common practice in comic books where teams change after a period of time.
Think of the group composition of the Avengers in the comics. It started with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Ant-man and Wasp, The Hulk. After Captain America resigned he was replaced by other members like Hawkeye and Wonder Man.
It was common practice until Editor In Chief Jim Shooter did market research and tailored a whole marketing model out of it. Ever since teams change after a certain amount of time.
How do you grade the finale of the first season of the Savage She-Hulk? And what of the entire season? Let us know in the comments and I’ll be sure to reply!
