What you should know before starting Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Adrian by Adrian|

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the long-awaited sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is less than two weeks away from launching and here’s what you need to know before playing it!

Platform Availability

Many game developers release a downgraded version of their game so that older consoles (PS4/ Xbox One) can run them. Sadly, this is not the case for Star Wars Jedi Survivor.

The developers have focused on creating a new experience that feels like an evolved successor to Fallen Order. Because of this, Jedi Survivor will only be available at launch for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5.

EA hasn’t confirmed or denied the possibility of the game being released on older-gen consoles but I think it’s safe to assume that it won’t be in the near future.

What about Xbox Game Pass and EA Play?

EA Play subscribers will not have a ten-hour trial for Jedi Survivor. EA Play Pro members will be available to play the game but only when it releases on April 28, like the rest of the world.

So far, Star Wars Jedi Survivor isn’t listed as an upcoming game on Xbox Game Pass. This article will be updated in case this changes.

PC Requirements

The first thing that I must point out is that Star Wars Jedi Survivor requires 155 GB. Be sure to have enough space in your hard drive before downloading the game.

Before getting into the details of the game we must talk about the requirements. Not everyone has a PC with an RTX 4090 and an 8 core/16 threads processor but luckily for us, Star Wars Jedi Survivor will be able to run on computers with relatively “old” hardware. Here are the minimum and recommended PC system requirements (1080p).

Minimum:
OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Processor: 4 core/8 threads I Intel Core i7-7700 I Ryzen 5 1400
Memory: 8GB RAM
Graphics: 8GB VRAM I GTX 1070 I Radeon RX 580
DirectX: Version 12

Recommended:
OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Processor: 4 core/ 8 threads I Intel Core i5 11600K I Ryzen 5 5600X
Memory: 16 GB RAM
Graphics: 8GB VRAM I RTX 2070 I RX 6700 XT
DirectX: Version 12

Customization

Having our character look the way we want adds a little bit of immersion, especially in important cutscenes. Some people like their character to look badass while others prefer the goofy approach. Regardless of what type of player you are, the important thing is that we have as many options as possible.

Fallen Order provided very limited options for everything other than the lightsaber. Jedi Survivor is fixing this by giving us a ton of options to customize Cal; jackets, ponchos, mustaches, and crazy hairstyles.

BD-1 will also have multiple options to customize his appearance with more than just a paint job. Cal’s blaster is getting the same treatment but we don’t know if it will have more or fewer options.

The lightsaber customization will be on par with Fallen Order but this time, Cal Kestis can also wield a white lightsaber. How cool is that?!

Upgrading Cal

Lightsaber combat is one of the most essential things in a Star Wars game. It must be smooth, fast, flashy (to a certain extent), and give you different possibilities on how you want to approach a situation.

Sometimes you need speed and precision while others you might prefer raw power and others you might combine both depending on who you are fighting.

What you need to know before playing Star Wars Jedi Survivor - Character Upgrades

To expand the variety of fighting styles; Star Wars Jedi Survivor has increased the number of available fighting stances to five. All of them have strengths and weaknesses while also having very defined “identities”.

Single blade stance is the “basic” stance from the previous game but for Jedi Survivor, the combos and animations have been improved. This stance is an excellent example of a “jack of all trades but master of nothing”.

Dual-wielding lightsaber provides faster attacks by sacrificing range. Being able to hit multiple strikes in fast succession sounds very appealing but this comes with a higher risk. If you are over-aggressive, enemies will punish you, especially the strongest ones.

Double-bladed lightsabers are the top choice when it comes to fighting multiple enemies. Cal has improved a lot with his double-bladed lightsaber skills since Fallen Order. Fast movements and strong defense will prove extra useful when taking down groups of enemies.

What you need to know before playing Star Wars Jedi Survivor - Lightsaber Combat Forms

If you know what a “tank character” is then you already understand a lot about the Crossguard stance. You will be slower but the attacks are more powerful and the range of your attacks is increased considerably. It is a good option when fighting enemies that aren’t too fast.

Blaster stance is probably the most unique of all. Combining Cal’s blaster, with his lightsaber and Force powers open a ton of possibilities to perform moves from far away.

What you need to know before playing Star Wars Jedi Survivor - Force Abilities

A complete Jedi will master more than just lightsaber combat, which is why we have a total of nine skill trees. Five dedicated to Lightsaber Combat, one for Survival, and Three for Force Powers. The best thing about having so many options is that we will be able to reset our skill trees and recover all points. This way we can try multiple stances or playstyles without being locked for the rest of the game.

Additionally, Jedi Survivor features a perk system. These perks can be defensive, offensive, or utility. As you progress through the game more perk slots will be unlocked. Some perks take one slot while others may take up to two or even three.

Figuring out how to combine these perks with the skill trees is certainly going to be one of the most interesting things about this game.

Allies And Enemies

After splitting up, Merrin, Cere, Greez, BD-1, and Cal will all return for Jedi Survivor. They are all in different places and their goals have changed but that doesn’t mean that the Mantis crew won’t help a galaxy in desperate need of hope. Bode Akuna is a new companion that will help Cal and the other members of the crew in their new fight against the Empire.

What you need to know before playing Star Wars Jedi Survivor - Allies and Enemies, the Cast returns

Jedi Survivor is implementing a new mechanic that allows your companions to fight alongside you and land a powerful combined attack. This ability is going to have a cooldown to prevent its abuse but it’s really cool to finally incorporate the companions in our gameplay rather than just watching them do something in a cutscene.

There are returning enemies as well as new ones. The list includes Purge Troopers, Droidekas, BX Commando Droids, Scout Troopers, B1 Battle Droids, IG-100 MagnaGuards, mercenaries, and many more.

Defeating dangerous creatures was one of my favorite things to do in Jedi Fallen Order. I’m so excited to learn more about what beasts await us in Jedi Survivor; so far we know about a Wampa and a Rancor which already makes it pretty epic if you ask me.

What you need to know before playing Star Wars Jedi Survivor - Boss Fight, a Rancor

We don’t know much about the villains in this game. The Jedi Survivor gameplay trailer revealed a bit of the fight against Rayvis, a deadly mercenary that belongs to the Gen’Dai species.

The Gen’Dai are virtually immortal beings that can regenerate their entire bodies by burying themselves in the ground for hundreds of years. Fighting a bounty hunter with hundreds of years of experience is not going to be an easy task!

The High Republic Jedi looks like he’s going to be the main antagonist of Jedi Survivor but if we learned something with Fallen Order is that there’s always more than meets the eye. The Empire is still out there hunting for anyone that is force-sensitive, High Republic or not.

Bigger Explorable Areas

Fallen Order reminded me how fun it can be to explore a planet in a Star Wars game; finding hidden secrets, defeating deathly creatures, and solving puzzles are some of my favorite things to do in any action-adventure game.

For me, Kashyyyk and Dathomir were the best planets in Fallen Order not only because of their rich lore and importance in Star Wars but because of how creative you could be when exploring them.

What you need to know before playing Star Wars Jedi Survivor - Exploration

Jedi Survivor has increased the size of every explorable area. The trailer shown at Star Wars celebration revealed that we will return to the capital world of Coruscant. We also know that Koboh is where your new adventure will being.

An undisclosed location is also shown in the trailer, I believe that it is the ancient planet of Jedha. This is because of some of the statues shown and due to the fact that the Empire extracted the Kyber crystals from the planet, as shown in Rogue One. This is just an assumption but to me, it makes perfect sense, especially because of the time period when this game occurs.

Available areas and locations

One thing that I must point out is that we don’t know if Coruscant will be a huge explorable planet or if it’s more of a linear mission that just takes place there.

It’s Easier To Move From Point A To Point B

As much as I enjoyed exploring all planets in Fallen Order, it’s undeniable that sometimes it was annoying having to figure out the way back, especially the Tomb of Eilram.

To fix this, Respawn has finally added fast travel. It won’t let us teleport directly to the Mantis but to “Save Points” that must be unlocked by meditating near them. Fast travel will be directly between these points; it is not the best fast travel ever but it is certainly an improvement.

Transportation and Movement

Different creatures will aid Cal Kestis to navigate and explore different areas in Jedi Survivor. It’s unclear if some of these areas will only be reachable with the help of said creatures but even if that’s not the case, I really like the idea of moving faster through the map.
