This guide will teach you what to watch out for during the third Dagan Gera boss fight in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and how to defeat him. Dagan is a powerful enemy that uses short-range, long-range, lightsaber, and force attacks. It’s a fun and entertaining fight but this doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy.
Please note this article contains some story spoilers that we have to talk about in order to properly describe the encounter.
Where to find Dagan Gera in the Observatory
The third encounter with Dagan Gera happens at the top of the Koboh Observatory. After learning the entire story about his betrayal of the Jedi Order from the High Republic era, Cal is ready to confront the fallen Jedi Knight.
How to Prepare for the Encounter
At this point, you should have already collected as many stims as possible. They will be crucial if you plan to defeat Dagan Gera.
For this guide, I played this boss fight multiple times on Jedi Knight, Jedi Master, and Jedi Grandmaster difficulties and tested different combinations of lightsaber stances. The fight is easier with the dual wield as a main fighting stance.
For your secondary stance, you can pick the blaster or double-bladed, depending on your playstyle and preferences, both work fine.
Crossguard may give you some hard time mainly because of how slow it is, Dagan can perform very fast combos that include unblockable attacks. If you let him make the first move, he will most likely outspeed you on almost every strike, at least on Master and Grandmaster.
I’m not saying it’s impossible to defeat him with the Crossguard stance, for the majority of players it’s easier with other lightsaber stances. It all depends on your playstyle and skill.
Be sure to rest at the meditation point that is outside of Dagan’s location to recover health, restore stims, and adjust your perks for this fight. You can also change your lightsaber stances if you want to try something different.
Dagan Gera’s Attacks and Strategies Explained
Dagan Gera’s final fight is divided into three phases. Things will start slow and simple but as you decrease his health, Dagan will start to use new and/or improved attacks and abilities.
The key is to deplete his stamina bar, once you do that there will be a small window for you to inflict as much damage as possible.
Using force slow can be very advantageous when he’s still recovering from a combo or if you need to prevent getting damaged when on low health.
Phase One
Dagan will focus on lightsaber attacks in the first phase of the fight. Most of them will become more powerful as you progress through the battle. For most of Dagan’s attacks I recommend dodging over trying to block or parry, he’s fast and powerful.
Many of his combos are unblockable so to make things easier, you can try to dodge at the last second (if you’re confident in your skill) or jump away from him when you’re in no position to strike.
Dagan will run at you while one of his sabers spins around him in a circle. If you parry the spinning saber, Dagan will get staggered for a brief moment but if you only block it, the lightsaber will continue to spin for a few more rounds until Dagan stops the attack or you successfully parry it.
Even if you’re at what appears to be a safe distance you must be on your guard, as he can perform a small combo that will let him shorten the distance between the two of you in just a fraction of a second.
Dagan will pull back his body before throwing himself at you. This is an unblockable attack but it only becomes so during the last part of the animation, if you haven’t moved out of the way or interrupted him before it it’s probably too late.
Dagan has only one jump attack. He will turn red without attacking or moving from his position and almost immediately jump to perform an unblockable attack.
In this first phase, you can punish him after he lands but that changes in the next two phases of the battle.
Phase one is the only one out of the three where Bode can help you at all times. Make sure to make him attack Dagan as soon as the ability is available, this can carry you out to the next phase without receiving any significant damage.
Phase Two
After dealing enough damage to Dagan (about a quarter of his HP) a cutscene will trigger. Once it’s finished, phase two of this boss fight will begin.
Dagan hits faster, and harder and has new tricks under his sleeve. A visual indicator of this is that Dagan has “grown” a new arm.
Remember that the key to defeating Dagan is to eliminate his stamina bar. After doing it on phase two Bode will appear temporarily to fire a few shots at the enemy.
Once Dagan is back in a fighting position Bode will disappear until you repeat this process.
Keeping Cal away from Dagan no longer guarantees safety as the High Republic Jedi will now send force waves directly at you. These can not be parried and blocking them is also useless. The only thing you can do is move out of the way. Since it’s only one wave you shouldn’t have many problems.
In this phase, Dagan will shoot only two in a row but keep in mind that not all waves will have the same inclination. It’s a simple attack but doubting or moving in the wrong direction could cost you a good chunk of your health bar.
As I mentioned above, Dagan has increased his speed and power, his combos now include powerful and quick strikes. Just like Cal, Dagan can change rapidly between double-bladed and dual-wielding.
Blaster Stance and Dual Wielding were the stances that I recommend as most effective against these attacks due to their natural speed. Blocking, parrying, and dodging are a lot easier and that’s essential to breaking Dagan’s balance.
This ability covers a great area of the map and it can do a lot of damage but if you’re paying attention then it should be fine. Dagan will contract his body and you’ll see how the energy is also pulled around him.
After a few seconds, he will release it and create this “field”. Get away from him as fast as possible and get ready to jump back at him as soon as this bubble disappears. He will need a second to recover and this is a good opportunity to land a hit.
Another new ability of “Phase Two Dagan” is the creation of floating energy spheres. He will cast them and then throw them at you at medium speed.
Just like the force waves, blocking them will not prevent Cal from getting hit so the best thing is to move out of the way. They will follow you but running and/or dashing is enough to evade them.
Phase Three
Once Dagan’s health bar is on 50% or less, another cutscene will trigger. Take a few seconds to catch your breath because the next few minutes will be intense!
This is the third and final phase of the fight. You’ve made Dagan angry and he won’t hold back any longer. Prepare to make use of all the fancy tricks, since Bode has been taken out of combat you’ll have to fight for each inch of ground on your own.
As soon as the cutscene ends, Dagan will divide himself into three. The other two do as much damage and if you lose track of the original, you can recognize him by the special attacks. The original will be the only one that performs stronger attacks like the force waves or force field.
Fun fact, if you eliminate one of the fake Dagan and a few minutes go on without taking the other down then he will use this ability again and now you’ll be fighting up to four Dagan Gera!
For more than an hour, I tried to see how many he could spawn but it appears that four is the limit, regardless of difficulty.
Remember the force waves? Well, now he shoots three waves at a time and up to four times. This is not as dangerous as other attacks but I still consider that getting hit by it is pretty bad considering that this is probably the easiest ability to dodge.
As you might have imagined, Dagan’s attacks are even faster in this last phase. Missing the time to parry can lead to you losing the majority of your health bar. His combos also last longer and can be a little overwhelming the first time but after a few tries you’ll be able to adjust your reaction time.
Dagan now shoots more of those strange spheres, they also move faster but nothing that a few dashes can’t solve. Make sure to always keep your eyes on Dagan, sometimes he will just watch you from the distance but others he’s going to attack while you try to evade the bubbles.
His jump attack is a lot more powerful and its previous weakness has been covered. It deals more damage while also covwwsering more area. The safest thing to do is to move out of the way.
You can’t attack him any longer because a small force field will pop up as soon as he lands on the ground. Just like the bigger version, it will cover a significant area and cause damage.
The Force Field now releases a shockwave that travels across the entire room. It travels almost at floor level, jumping at the right time will let you avoid it without any problem.
The most iconic dark side ability is the Force Choke and it seems that it’s not only Darth Vader fans who love it. Dagan will raise his arm and run to you at an incredible speed, this one is unblockable at every stage of the animation.
Once Dagan’s health is low enough, a cutscene will ensue. I will not describe exactly what happens to avoid spoilers but let’s say that Cal finds a way to use Dagan’s fears and trauma against him. This scene is a great example of how Jedi can use more than brute force to overcome a mighty enemy.
