Ahsoka Episode 5 is full of nostalgic moments, great dialogues, and some scenes that will send chills down your spine!
It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of the original trilogy, the prequels, Rebels, The Clone Wars, or even the sequels. This episode has something for everyone!
Recap of the Story so far
After being forced to land in the forest of Seatos, Huyang begins the ship’s reparations but it doesn’t take long before they’re found and attacked. Sabine and Ahsoka rush to find and recover the map. After running a few meters they’re intercepted by Shin Hati and Marrok.
Ahsoka defeats Marrok with a single strike of her white lightsaber. She continues while Sabine stays behind, despite Huyang’s request for them to stay together.
Baylan Skoll stands between Ahsoka and the map. The two of them fight for a while but in the end, Ahsoka loses the duel and falls to the ocean.
Sabine believes that she has also lost Ahsoka and in a moment of weakness, she succumbs to the idea of Ezra still being alive. After returning the map to Baylan, Morgan Elsbeth is able to complete the calculations required for the Eye of Sion to travel to the galaxy where Thrawn is stranded. Sabine is taken prisoner and Ahsoka is left for dead.
General Hera Syndulla ignores the orders of Chancellor Mothma and goes to help her friends. She’s joined by Carson Teva and four more X-Wing pilots. As they arrive at Seatos, Morgan Elsbeth makes the jump to hyperspace. This leaves their ships temporarily disabled and in the chaos, two X-Wings are destroyed.

Jacen: Like Father, Like Son
The Ahsoka series occurs around ten years after the Star Wars Rebels finale, since then, Jacen has grown and slowly developed some of his inherited abilities. It’s remarkable how without having a formal Jedi Master to mentor him he has learned to stay calm and listen to his surroundings.
A mother’s bond with her force-sensitive son is without a doubt a super strong connection and in such a tense moment where Sabine and Ahsoka are nowhere to be found this could cause her emotions to overwhelm and distract Jacen.
And yet, he remains focused on what he can do to help. We don’t know much about Jacen other than he’s the son of Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus but I’m already intrigued about his future development as a character.
To be so self-centered at such a young age without any training speaks wonders about the kind of person that he is. I remember how other Jedi Padawans (Anakin, Luke, Ezra) struggled to stay centered and with a cool head even when receiving the guidance of experienced Masters.
It might be too soon to dive deeper into it but Kanan would be more than proud to have such an insightful son. Obviously, Hera should get a lot of credit for this, especially since she’s no Jedi but it’s still nothing less of impressive conduct.
It’s so cool to hear that Huyan named Kanan even just once. Star Wars live-action series don’t usually mention characters that were important in animated series (like Satine Kryze) and while their importance might be implicit for the most dedicated fans, not all the audience is aware of it.
For me, Kanan’s death is the most devastating moment of Star Wars Rebels. To this day I still get super sad when watching this scene. So, even if this episode didn’t get into details about his fate it’s still very cool that they take a few seconds to mention him.
Anakin’s lesson for Ahsoka: Live Or Die
Anakin talking with Ahsoka in live-action is something that many of us have dreamed about for many years. It’s so heartwarming to see two of my favorite characters talk and reflect on what happened.
Since her early days as a Padawan, Ahsoka questioned her role in a war that the Jedi joined so eagerly. I don’t think there was a single day where Anakin had second thoughts about the war or the effects that it would have on him and those around him.
Anakin was the perfect soldier, always doing whatever was necessary to gain the upper hand in what seemed like an endless war. His innate passion and care for those under his command made him a great leader and a relentless general but these qualities were also his demise.
He never stopped to consider if his actions were right, but Ahsoka thought that doing the exact opposite would be the answer to a question she didn’t fully understand.
To find the answer, Ahsoka and Anakin return to two events of her past that had a huge impact on her, The Battle of Ryloth and the Siege of Mandalore. The first one happened when she was still a very inexperienced Commander, witnessing so much death caused by her decisions made Ahsoka question everything.
Watching Ahsoka in live-action really puts into perspective how young she was when Anakin took her as his Padawan. She was just a kid leading soldiers in a war she didn’t fully comprehend.
Ahsoka questioning the war and her role in it really shows how mature she was at such a young age. Even if Anakin’s intentions were good, his way of doing things led to death, destruction, and regret.
Healing The Wound
Extremes are always bad, no matter how good intentions anyone has. Anakin made many mistakes, and now he’s going to help Ahsoka figure out what she must do to finally let go of her (and his) past.
However, this kind of lesson can’t simply be learned by hearing some wise words. The regret of not being there for her master is a wound that hasn’t healed. Darth Vader’s image has haunted Ahsoka since their encounter on Malachor V but the time to finally face her deepest fear has come.
Anakin confronts his former Padawan, the duel is very intense and emotional. Ahsoka faces this challenge with courage but most importantly, with wisdom. This isn’t a duel against Anakin, it’s a battle with herself.
Right when she’s able to strike her enemy down, she decides to refrain from taking a life (not that she would have killed an already dead Anakin but you get my point).
She has learned from the mistakes of the past (hers and Anakin’s) and is now ready to finally move on. With this, the final lesson of Anakin Skywalker is concluded.
This scene has become one of my favorites in all of Star Wars, Anakin “coming back” to help Ahsoka and finally give her closure is such a powerful and beautiful moment that I will cherish forever.
Ahsoka Reborn
It’s outstanding how Rosario Dawson is able to communicate so much without saying anything. After Ahsoka returns from the World Between Worlds, the change to white clothing is impossible to miss, but there’s a lot more to it than just wearing a different color.
Ahsoka’s micro-expressions, her body language, how she talks, and even the way she looks at things have changed very subtly but it’s still noticeable. All of these changes reflect how she has been “reborn”, after finally letting go of her past she is now a new person.
Many people have been very vocal about Ahsoka being “too stoic”, which is true but there’s a reason behind it. The body serves as a mirror of the mind, whatever we’re going through is always reflected in our body, no matter if it’s positive or negative.
Ahsoka was always trying to manage her fears but it was they who were able to control her. This happened over an extended period of time and changed her behavior, her emotional response, and her body language.
It makes perfect sense that appeared to be so cold since her first appearance in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. I think that her demeanor will not be the same in the remaining episodes now that she’s found herself.
After the map was destroyed I really thought that Ahsoka’s chances to get Ezra and Sabine back were gone. There was no logical way to follow them, but the Force works in ways that are all but logical.
Ahsoka trusted her instincts and used the Force to find an answer to a problem that many would have considered unsolvable. She doesn’t know where this path leads, but she’s confident that the Force and her training will be enough to get out of any trouble, the only issue is that Grand Admiral Thrawn isn’t just any problem.
The Friend Everyone Needs
I have to point out how cool Carson Teva is. Since his encounters with Din Djarin, he’s proven to be someone who cares about doing the right thing and helping others, even if that goes against the orders of the higher-ups.
He didn’t hesitate to join Hera when she went rogue to help Ahsoka and Sabine. Not a single question was asked whenever Hera told him to do more runs over the ocean. It was very funny to see him just respond “Ok” when Huyang told him about Jacen’s abilities.
Carson doesn’t fully understand what’s happening but that doesn’t stop him from giving his best. He’s a very tiny piece of the puzzle but even then he’s still there to stand by those who he believes are doing the right thing. I’ve grown really fond of this character and it would be a shame for him not to appear more in the upcoming episodes and Star Wars series.
Easter Eggs And References
The fifth episode is stuffed through the roof with references and Easter eggs for The Clone Wars – both from the TV Series and the movies.
Storm Over Ryloth Ep
The first scene where we see a young Ahsoka occurs in Episode 19 of the first season of The Clone Wars. If you want to learn more about their conversation and why this event is meaningful for Ahsoka you should definitely watch it.
The Siege Of Mandalore
After the assassination of Satine Kryze, Maul took over Mandalore. In a desperate attempt to recover the planet, Bo-Katan joined by Ahsoka asks the Republic for help. You can experience The Siege of Mandalore by watching the final season of The Clone Wars.
Mandalorian Super Commandos
The odd-looking Mandalorians are Mandalorian Super Commandos. This group of Mandalorians joined Maul after he defeated Pre Vizsla in a duel and took the dark saber from him. They would follow him until his defeat at the hands of Ahsoka, putting an end to the Siege of Mandalore.
332nd Company
You might have noticed that some clones had orange paint on their helmets. This is the 332nd Company, a division within the 501st Legion that painted their helmets to honor Ahsoka Tano, their Commander who returned to lead them on the Siege of Mandalore.
Ariana Greenblatt
The younger version of Ahsoka is played by Ariana Greenblatt. She played a young Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War.
Ahsoka, The White
Ahsoka’s journey reminds me a lot of Gandalf. After defeating the Balrog, he died but was sent back by Eru Ilúvatar to take over Saruman’s role. He returned as a wiser and more powerful wizard. Ahsoka came back renewed and while we still don’t see if this translates into battle I’m sure the next time she and Baylan fight, the result won’t be the same.
Psychometry
The ability that Ahsoka uses to learn what happened to Sabine is known as Psychometry. This allows the user to learn information about people or events associated with a specific object by just touching it.
This is the first time that this power has been shown in live-action. It’s a rare power even amongst the Jedi, other than Ahsoka only Cal Kestis and Karr Nuq Shin have displayed this ability.
Final Thoughts
This is my favorite episode of probably any Star Wars series. It was a powerful, emotional, and coherent episode that ties a lot of things.
My personal highlight was definitely being able to see all iterations of Anakin Skywalker: the young know-it-all Jedi Knight, the impulsive and threatening Darth Vader, and then the enlightened Master who has learned from his mistakes and now ensures that his Padawan doesn’t follow the same path.
I love how they were very careful about every detail. Anakin’s armor/robes, his haircuts, Ahsoka’s clothes, headpieces, etc. But most importantly, the fighting styles of both Anakin and Ahsoka.
Hayden Christensen did a great job during their small combat, it’s amazing how after just a few movements you can say “Yeah, that’s the Anakin that I remember”. Ariana Greenblatt deserves a lot of credit. It doesn’t matter that her combat scene lasted a few minutes, her movements were identical to what Ahsoka did in the Clone Wars.
I’m sure that she had to train a lot for those movements but I think it really paid off. Ahsoka’s fast and precise strikes are key to her identity as a warrior and Ariana nailed it.
Visually speaking it was incredible. The quick transitions between Anakin and Darth Vader gave me so many goosebumps, The World Between Worlds looked fantastic, watching the Mandalorian Commandos as well as Captain Rex in live-action is something that I thought would never happen and the scene where Ahsoka communicates with the Purrgil is breathtaking.
Honestly, I don’t think it gets better than this. This episode has set up the bar very high for the remaining episodes and while I seriously doubt that something can top this, we still need to consider that we know nothing about what’s coming up next.
Other than the moments where Thrawn appears in the trailers, we’ve seen every other scene used in marketing media for the show. From now on everything will be a surprise and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
