Ahsoka’s Episode 7 “Dreams and Madness” sets up the upcoming and final episode of the series. I was expecting some things to get solved on this one but it seems that we’ll have to wait a few more days!
Story Recap
Morgan Elsbeth finally reached Grand Admiral Thrawn and it turns out that the Nightsisters have allied with him and are actively helping in his return. Even after so many years in exile, the Grand Admiral hasn’t lost his touch and remains and great strategist.
Thrawn released Sabine, hoping that she would lead them to the location of Ezra Bridger. It doesn’t take much time before she eventually finds her long-lost friend. Both are extremely happy but Sabine is reluctant to tell him what she did to get there in the first place.
Baylan has revealed his intentions to put an end to the neverending cycle of constant battle between the light and the darkness. He didn’t go into any details but it’s evident that this has been his main objective since the beginning.

Hera’s Struggles with Politicians
Hera is back on Coruscant to deal with the never-ending politics. Senator Xiono has been a pain in the butt since his first appearance and that continues to be the case. It’s baffling how someone who lived through the Clone Wars and Galactic Empire is incapable of understanding the danger that Grand Admiral Thrawn represents.
Just like the Rebellion had many spies, the Imperial Remnants still have loyal people all over the galaxy. The missing piece is a revered and powerful leader who is able to summon all of them. Not even Moff Gideon was close to inspiring the same fear and respect that Thrawn does.
It’s hard to tell if Senator Xiono is blinded by his own fear or if his efforts to undermine are caused by incompetence. If it wasn’t for the fact that this character isn’t new, I’d seriously doubt his loyalty to the New Republic.
It’s also disturbing that Mon Mothma has been so hesitant to believe the possible return of the Grand Admiral. Hera has proved to be a trustworthy leader hundreds of time, and while she clearly has a personal interest in finding Ezra, she knows better than to endanger the New Republic for her personal motives.
The fleet saw the Purrgils, Morgan Elsbeth was released by two Dark Jedi, one assembly line on Corellia secretly provided seven hyperdrive cores for the monstrous ship that Morgan built, a ship that Carson Teva and the other members of his squad personally saw jump into hyperspace.
It doesn’t matter if Morgan succeeds, the fact that she has gone through so much trouble to find her old master should be enough for anyone with a functioning brain to realize that all of these things aren’t coincidences. What was considered a possibility is now imminent, Grand Admiral Thrawn is coming back and the worst thing is that it could (should) have been prevented.
I wonder what would have happened to Hera if Leia hadn’t intervened in the matter. Though, at least it was funny to see Xiono think about having to deal with Leia Organa and immediately refusing to do such a thing.
There’s Always Something To Learn
Watching Hayden Christensen wear Anakin’s outfit from The Clone Wars will never get old, I simply can’t get over it. Ahsoka continues to hear her master’s holoprojections despite how much time has passed.
Star Wars continuously shows that no matter how old, wise, or powerful anyone is, there is always something more to learn. Even old lessons can teach new things after some time. Our perspectives, experiences, and feelings are constantly changing. Sometimes we head in the right direction while others is necessary to take a few steps back and calmly reconsider the bigger picture.
Ahsoka’s recent experience in the World Between Worlds taught her new things and probably also remembered some of the old things that Anakin used to say during her days as his Padawan.
Her journey is far from being over, I can’t wait to see all the things that she has learned and most importantly, what use she’ll give to them.
Different Paths and Baylan’s secret plan
Baylan Skoll is a super interesting character, we’ve all been captivated not only by Ray Stevenson’s performance but also by how different the character is from other villains.
He doesn’t seem to enjoy hurting others but that doesn’t stop him from doing whatever’s necessary. His objective is very important, but it’s still not fully clear what he intends to do.
The relationship he has with Shin Hati is odd, he cares for her but also keeps many things from his apprentice. She always has to ask what’s next and many times Shin looks surprised about the answers she receives.
My perception has always been that she’s often confused about Baylan’s decisions. They might have a Master-Apprentice relationship, but it’s nothing like what we saw during the Clone Wars.
Obviously, every relationship is very different, some Masters were a little too detached from their apprentices while others had a very strong bond, but you get what I mean.
The moment when Baylan told Shin that they would go separate ways was very shocking. Helping Morgan find Thrawn was always a means to an end but how he basically said “Well, my path is somewhere else, goodbye” left me shocked.
Shin Hati is still inexperienced, impulsive, and undecided about what she wants, not to mention that she lacks the power to take on experienced enemies. This would probably be the best moment to have a Master by her side but instead, she’s now alone and the only ones who could help her, don’t really care if she lives or not.
It looks like Baylan is very close to finding whatever he’s looking for, for sure it’s going to be very interesting to finally learn what his true intentions are.
Ahsoka vs Baylan Rematch
This series has only eight episodes, considering that this was number seven I assumed that the rematch between Ahsoka and Baylan would end with him being defeated.
Their fight was very brief but even if we could only see a few seconds of it Ahsoka looked a lot better here than in their previous encounter.
The first time that they fought Ahsoka looked angry, which translated into her fighting Inevitably, she lost balance after thinking that Sabine was dead, this almost cost her life.
The setup was almost perfect for a final rematch between the light and the dark but considering Baylan’s purpose is yet to be revealed we will probably have to wait.
The next episode is probably going to focus on everyone trying to return home, well everyone but Baylan. Thrawn is not going to let Ahsoka simply hop into the Chimaera for a free ride, without the Purrgils to help them I can’t think of a way that Ahsoka, Sabine, Huyang and Ezra can return.
My unfounded prediction is that the mysterious power Baylan is looking for could also be the key to returning home. At least we only have to wait a few more days before it is all revealed.
Just Like Old Times: Sabine and Ezra together again
When Star Wars Rebels aired I had very little hope about it being good but after a few seasons it turned into one of the best Star Wars shows. It introduced new characters like the Ghost Crew and the Inquisitors while also expanding the story of already-known characters like Bo-Katan, Maul, and Ahsoka.
Ezra went from being a scared boy to a very wise Jedi considering his limited training and age. Sabine redeemed herself as a Mandalorian and Ahsoka finally learned what happened to her master. It’s not a perfect show but I really enjoyed the story and characters and now they’re back.
Sabine Wren, Ahsoka Tano, and Ezra Bridger together in a scene, on a live-action series that also has Thrawn. That’s a phrase that I’d never thought would become a reality. It took seven episodes but after so many years of speculation and wishful thinking, it finally became a reality.
I don’t know what’s going to happen next but having a reunion of the Ghost Crew plus Ahsoka seems almost inevitable at this point. What a time to be a Star Wars fan!
Thrawn’s Mission is Accomplished
After going through so much and making some very questionable decisions (Sabine), Ezra is back with his friends. The only problem is that Thrawn gained enough time to move “something” to his Star Destroyer.
If these items are related to the Nightsisters, then there’s a lot to worry about. Thrawn won’t return simply to retire and have a peaceful life, he is coming as the rightful heir to the Empire. So many years in isolation have given him plenty of time to prepare for almost every possible situation.
This time he won’t have unlimited resources, there’s no Darth Vader to serve as an enforcer and the New Republic has been established for a few years now. And yet, I don’t think that any of that matters.
Thrawn will be more determined to re-establish the Empire to its former glory. With the New Republic being so complacent my guess is that they will suffer heavy losses before being able to stand their ground against such a scary opponent.
Easter Eggs And References
This episode was full of cameos and namedrops that really brought some nostalgia back.
Star Wars’ most famous meme
The Mon Calamari sitting next to Mon Mothma is none other than Admiral Ackbar. He’s the one who said the memorable “It’s a trap” line on Return of the Jedi.
Claudia Black
The Great Mother who appears to be the leader is played by Claudia Black. She’s mostly known for her role as Vala Mal Doran in Stargate SG-1 but has also participated in games like Diablo III, Gears of War 4, and Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Anthony Daniels
Watching C-3PO brought me so much joy, even if it appeared only for a minute. The best thing is that Anthony Daniels himself played him. I guess no one else could really play the role but it was still a very cool moment.
The First Nightsister
There were some important name-drops in this episode: Count Dooku, General Grievous, Leia Organa, and even the Inquisitorious. But hearing Anakin mention Asajj Ventress was very special. She was the first Nightsister character to ever appear in Star Wars and is one of the most beloved characters from the Clone Wars animated show.
Final Thoughts about Ahsoka Episode 7
I enjoyed this episode, it had a few great moments but I can’t deny that my expectations were not completely met. This is the second to last episode of this series and it feels like there’s still so much to cover.
The “Night Troopers” left me disappointed, after the intervention of the Nightsisters one would think that these soldiers would stand out from standard Stormtroopers but they’re defenseless against any competent opponent.
The cargo that Thrawn is transporting is probably my biggest worry. A barely functional Star Destroyer with Stormtroopers wouldn’t be a threat for the New Republic but whatever he’s carrying can probably turn the tide.
I can’t help but wonder if it’s something related to the Great Mothers. Also, are they joining Thrawn? If so, is there a chance of seeing Dathomir in live-action? That would be amazing!
