Note: this guide contains major spoilers for the Phantom Liberty story!
Important Things To Know about the Endings
For all four main endings of Phantom Liberty, you must make an important decision during the main job “Firestarter”. Songbird will want both of you to run away from Reed to go after the supposed cure that they might have access to, while Reed’s intentions are to capture and deliver Songbird to the NUSA so that she can be judged for her treason and also receive treatment for her condition.
What you choose will define (partially) the outcome of your Phantom Liberty story. “The Killing Moon” and “Somewhat Damaged” are the final missions of the storyline, helping Songbird unlocks The Killing Moon while Somewhat Damaged is only available after deciding to ally with Reed.
Each one of these final missions has multiple choices that will also affect the outcome of the story. Combining these options with those you have to make during Firestarter gives the possibility of having multiple endings.
We have detailed guides dedicated to these missions, the following segments are summarized versions of them. If you want to learn specific details about the things mentioned here check our Firestarter, Somewhat Damaged, and The Killing Moon walkthroughs as well as the Phantom Liberty Achievements and Iconic Items guides.
You will notice that each ending has a secret achievement attached to it. And they are identical to the names of the four new Tarot Cards in Dogtown.
The first segment offers simple step-by-step instructions for each ending, while the second segment contains brief tales of each ending, for those who want a little more context.
How to unlock each Phantom Liberty Ending scenario
This segment will give you easy-to-follow steps for each ending and a resume of the events that your decisions lead to.
King of Wands Ending: Reed Dies, Songbird Goes to the Moon, No Cure For V
- Side with Songbird during Firestarter.
- Grab the Iconic Weapon “Murphy’s Law” during the escape (Optional).
- During The Killing Moon mission, get to the Spaceport, and follow Songbird’s instructions until both get to the train.
- Listen to Songbird confessing that the cure is only usable once.
- Decline Reed’s proposition.
At the end of this sequence, V will kill Reed. Remember to grab his Iconic Pistol “Pariah” after putting Songbird in the shuttle.
In this ending, you have sent Songbird to the Moon, but killing Somolon Reed means that V will not be able to get treatment from the NUSA government. So Mi’s faith remains a mystery.
You will not unlock the new secret ending for the base game. Completing the story with these options grants the “King of Wands” achievement.
King Of Swords Ending: Reed Takes Songbird, V Is Screwed
- Side with Songbird during Firestarter.
- Grab the Iconic Weapon “Murphy’s Law” during the escape (Optional).
- During The Killing Moon mission, get to the Spaceport, and follow Songbird’s instructions until both get to the train.
- Listen carefully to Songbird while she confesses the truth about the cure.
- Pick up the phone and listen to Reed’s proposal.
- Accept Reed’s deal and let him take Songbird.
After choosing this option, V will handle Songbird to Solomon Reed. He will take her away in an AV and you’ll be told to simply forget everything that happened here.
This might seem like a pretty lackluster sequence of events but choosing this path will unlock a completely new ending to the base game.
Completing the story with these options grants the “King of Swords” achievement.
King Of Cups Ending: So Mi Dies, Reed Is Devastated, No Reward for V
- Side with Reed during Firestarter.
- Grab the Iconic Weapon “Murphy’s Law” during the escape (Optional).
- Zero Kurt Hansen and escape the stadium.
- Attempt (and fail) to free Songbird from the MaxTac convoy.
- Begin the Somewhat Damaged mission.
- Track So Mi to the secret Militech installation.
- Activate the terminals.
- Avoid getting spotted by the deathly Cerberus unit.
- Get the blueprint for the Erebus Iconic Weapon (Optional).
- Gain access to the Core Room, talk with what’s left of So Mi, and then enter the core.
- Grant So Mi’s final wish and kill her.
After ending So Mi’s life, Reed will arrive shortly after. He’s shattered by the fact that he couldn’t arrive earlier and is truly convinced that him talking to Songbird would have made a difference.
Later, you and Reed deliver the body to the NUSA. President Myers says that help to get rid of the relic will not be provided given the fact that So Mi didn’t survive.
Completing the story with these options grants the “King of Cups” achievement. Choosing this path will not unlock the new ending for the base game.
King Of Pentacles Ending: So Mi Survives, Reed Completes His Job, V Is Promised Help
- Side with Reed during Firestarter.
- Grab the Iconic Weapon “Murphy’s Law” during the escape (Optional).
- Take out Kurt Hansen and escape the stadium.
- Refuse to kill So Mi, let Reed and the NUSA take her into custody.
The sequence of events that occur after So Mi passes out is very similar to the King Of Cups ending but there are minor differences. Reed isn’t filled with joy but he expresses his gratitude for saving So Mi. President Myers herself gives V a medal and a thank you for the service provided.
It’s worth noting that So Mi wanted to die rather than go back to the NUSA. But for better or worse we’ll probably never learn about her faith.
Choosing this path will unlock a completely new ending to the base game. Completing the story with these options grants the “King Of Pentacles” achievement.
Detailed explanation of each choice leading to the different Endings
This segment will lead you through all choices in chronological order, explaining what the immediate and long-term consequences are for making a decision when you are offered a choice in a cutscene or gameplay moment from the main jobs of the expansion.
Siding With Songbird In Firestarter
During Firestarter, you’re forced to make arguably the most impactful decision of Phantom Liberty, picking a side isn’t easy but it’s necessary.
Choosing Songbird over Reed will result in the death of Colonel Kurt Hansen. As a result of this, you’ll have to fight multiple Barghest Troops to get out of the Petrochem Stadium. Songbird can hack multiple objects and devices to make this easier.
“Murphy’s Law” is an Iconic Tier 5 One-Handed Club available during this part of the mission, to get it you just have to defeat “Murphy”.
Once you’ve reached the tunnels, defeated the drones, and escaped the sewers, both will go separate ways. A few days will pass until Songbird reaches again, this is when the final mission will begin.
Making A Final Decision During The Killing Moon
After going to the coordinates sent by Songbird, both will head to the Spaceport where a shuttle is waiting. Getting inside is fairly easy, getting a Corpo outfit (optional) allows you to access restricted areas. After helping Songbird access the Spaceport, the NUSA will arrive and their forces will be met by the local security forces.
You can ignore these enemies and get out of this area, time is crucial. There will be a small section where a NUSA helicopter will shoot at you, after escaping it you and Songbird must get to a control tower in order to call the train which will take both of you to the space shuttle. Getting to the train is only possible after surviving all incoming enemies and unleashing the Blackwall.
Using the power of the Blackwall really affects Songbird, she’s agonizing and can barely stay awake. After both get to the train, she finally opens herself up about everything.
It turns out that the “cure” can only be used once, she played you just like everyone else. Songbird is pretty much agonizing at this point but that doesn’t change the fact that lying and manipulating you was her choice, it’s time for you to make yours.
Before leaving the train, Reed calls asking that you let him take Songbird. It doesn’t matter what you tell him, because the final choice will be made shortly after when he shows up right before you can reach the shuttle.
Killing Reed
Refusing to hand over Songbird will result in the inevitable death of Reed. After doing so, V will put Songbird in the shuttle. After exiting the shuttle you can grab Reed’s iconic weapon “Pariah”. There is no way to know if her plan worked out or not, we can just hope that it does.
Delivering Songbird To Reed And The NUSA
Letting Reed take Songbird will prevent any bloodshed, but this is probably the most lackluster ending out of the four. You don’t get any sort of reward or iconic weapon, Reed will never make contact again and who knows what the NUSA will do to Songbird.
Siding With Reed In Firestarter
Picking Reed over Songbird in Firestarter will make her go completely crazy, to the point of entering a cyberpsychosis state. Kurt Hansen kills Alex and chaos is unleashed in the Petrochem stadium.
Lots of troops will attempt to stop you from leaving this place, Reed isn’t there to help and there’s no one to hack things for you. To make things even better, fighting (and defeating) Colonel Kurt Hansen is also a part of this mission.
After escaping the stadium, you and Reed witness how MaxTac captures Songbird. The next step of the plan is to try to free her when a convoy transports her, but that is easier said than done.
Deciding Songbird’s Fate In Somewhat Damaged
The attempt to retrieve Songbird from the MaxTac convoy fails, she takes control of the truck and drives in a direction that seems random but soon after you learn this is all but random. Songbird enters an abandoned secret installation created by Militech.
After exploring and activating some terminals, the Cerberus unit will begin to hunt you down. This is probably the most terrifying enemy in Phantom Liberty. There is no way to damage it, your only option is to be stealthy, if it spots you’ll die almost instantly.
After lots of maneuvering and sneaky movements, you’ll gain access to the Core Room. Through the Relic, Songbird will begin a conversation. What’s left of her mind will appear, this is probably her most vulnerable moment of the entire game. A true look at who Songbird is.
Moments after this “vision” ends the core will open, revealing an agonizing Songbird inside. She’s suffering to the point of no longer wanting to live, but she doesn’t even have enough strength to end it herself. Songbird asks you to grant her one last favor, to end her suffering once and for all.
Granting So Mi’s Wish
If you end So Mi’s life, she’ll have peace at last. Reed arrives shortly after and is devastated by this outcome but he doesn’t blame you (entirely) for it. The body is delivered to the NUSA but the help promised will not be delivered since you didn’t complete the job.
Delivering So Mi To The NUSA
Going against So Mi’s wish will make Reed as happy as he can be considering the situation. She is alive and will receive treatment, but the fact that she’d rather die than go back to the NUSA really makes me wonder how good this decision is. President Myers offers a medal for your service, Reed will contact you later with the details of the help the NUSA will provide.
As you’ve seen, none of these endings is truly happy but that’s just how it is in Cyberpunk 2077. All your decisions affect V and those who surround him/her, for better or worse. Which ending is the most satisfying one for you?
