The Bad Batch Final Season Trailer Breakdown
Even if the official trailer only lasts for a couple of minutes, there are a lot of key moments in it. These are my personal highlights of the trailer.
Rescuing Omega
The capture of Omega was a devastating blow for the team, certainly not as heart-breaking as the loss of Tech but something that they can’t simply walk away from. The third season is going to be all about rescuing the youngest member of the crew, she is part of their family now and one thing that The Bad Batch has shown is how clones look after each other.
This operation is important not only because of Omega’s well-being, but because finding out what the Empire is developing here could improve our understanding of Palpatine’s cloning process and its connection with The Mandalorian.
Of course, infiltrating the fortress that holds Omega, Crosshair, and other clone prisoners is easier said than done. There’s an entire platoon of Clone Commandos guarding the facility and I’m sure that Imperial reinforcements aren’t too far from Mount Tantiss.
An Invaluable asset for the Empire
The fact that Emperor Palpatine himself visits this place is a statement by itself. As head of the Galactic Empire, he rarely shows himself. Especially when Tarkin and Vader can attend in his place, there’s still much to learn about what happens in Mount Tantiss but it would be unwise to not consider this location as the most important one in the entire Empire, at least at this point in time.
When Palpatine says that this place will ensure the future of the Empire I believe that it’s mostly to ensure the future of his legacy. Empires and Republics have risen and fallen for thousands of years, regardless of how powerful their leaders are.
The Emperor understands that the only real way to live forever is to defeat death itself. He’s always been a man who plays for the long run, and so far it has turned out well for him. The assassination of his master, becoming the Chancellor, destroying the Republic and Jedi Order with a single strike are achievements many couldn’t even consider but he managed to pull it off.
If a man like this is giving whatever resources are necessary for something to succeed then I’m more than inclined to believe that whatever they’re doing will have a huge impact in the course of galactic history.
Old and new faces
It’s undeniable that having characters from other series, movies, books or comics appear in a new show is always fun and exciting, at least for me. The Bad Batch is so connected to other stories that it was impossible not to have some familiar faces show up.
There are so many things at stake and both sides will have to gather as much manpower to prevent their enemy from succeeding. The Galactic Empire has dozens of Clone Commandos led by Scorch, additional troopers, vehicles like the Clone Turbo Tank, turrets, and probably a few more things under their sleeve.
On the other hand, Clone Force 99 has been reduced to only half of their members. Hunter, Echo, and Wrecker will need to get help from many allies if they want to have the smallest chance of success. Luckily, the always reliable Captain Rex has been helping many other Clones since the Empire was created.
Hunter mentions that Omega “has been waiting for them for a long time”, meaning that there’s probably a significant time skip between Seasons 2 and 3. If this is the case, they’ve had a lot of time to gather resources, friends, and intelligence to break into the impenetrable fortress where Omega and the others are held captive.
Fennec Shand and Cad Bane also appeared in the trailer, both of them attempted to capture Omega in the first season of The Bad Batch. But not as allies, they almost killed each other in their encounter. It’s going to be very interesting to see what their role is in this season.
The good thing about Bounty Hunters is that none of them serve a single master. Just like the Empire hired them before, anyone can pay for their services. The idea of both Fennec and Cad Bane helping rescue Omega is far more appealing than watching them work for the bad guys.
A mysterious figure is shown leading some TK Troopers, his armor is based on Clone Trooper armor. Many fans are theorizing that Tech could be the one under the armor, I am one of the many thousands of people who suffered Tech’s death but I don’t share this opinion. He looks just like the Clone Assassin who tried to eliminate Senator Riyo Chuchi. Star Wars tends to bring back beloved characters but I don’t believe that Tech will be one of them.
The Return of Asajj Ventress
The most surprising moment of the trailer is by far the appearance of Asajj Ventress. It’s been more than twenty years since her debut on the first Clone Wars show (2003) but she has rightfully become a fan-favorite.
We’ve witnessed her evolution as a character throughout the years but sadly there’s still a lot that we don’t know. Dark Disciple is a great book that delves deeper into her story, psychology, and motivations.
The first thing that I thought when watching the trailer was that the events of Dark Disciple would no longer be canon but according to Brad Rau, supervising director and executive producer, this is not the case. I don’t want to spoil what happens at the end of the book but you can figure out by reading between the lines.
On paper, it’s great that she returns to a series. As much as I love Star Wars books and comics, the most entertaining way to learn about a character’s fate will always be on the small or big screen. If they execute the idea properly, I’m more than happy to have her back. The good thing is that we won’t have to wait much before finding out.
