Star Wars The Bad Batch Season 3 Episode 4 Breakdown and Easter Eggs

Adrian by Adrian|

The fourth episode of the third season of The Bad Batch shows how capable Omega has become since her first appearance in Star Wars. This episode ends with a reunion that many thought would happen later in the series.

Story Recap

The Emperor’s visit to Mount Tantiss provided a unique opportunity for escape. With most troops stationed at the hangar, Omega was able to get to Crosshair and release him. Then, they managed to get out of the Imperial facility, stole a shuttle, and jumped into hyperspace.

Right before Imperial V-Wings destroyed them, Dr. Karr confirmed that Omega’s blood sample showed positive results in the M-count transfer experiment. With her being the first and only positive test, Hemlock couldn’t risk killing the girl.

Even though Omega escaped, Hemlock doesn’t seem worried at all. The Emperor was very satisfied with the Dr.’s work and assured him that he’d get everything to ensure the success of Project Necromancer.

Omega is no longer a defenseless child

The almost impossible escape from Tantiss that Omega and Crosshair managed to pull off was something that I never expected. To think that just two clones managed to get out of one of the most secret and secure Empire facilities is nothing but outstanding.

I never thought they would escape because it seemed so ridiculous. While Crosshair and Batcher have contributed, it’s undeniable that Omega should be given most of the credit.

She has grown so much since her days as an assistant at the Kamino cloning facility. Slicing, piloting, combat training, and tracking are just some of the skills that Hunter, Tech, Echo, and Wrecker have taught her. However, the things that have been determining in Omega’s evolution are her unbreakable spirit and ability to adapt to every situation.

Having aggressive negotiations isn’t always the best approach, unlike her brothers, Omega is fully aware that brute force can be detrimental to a mission. It’s great to see that she’s able to find ways to complete the mission with just intelligence and non-combat-related skills.

Fighting fire with fire is a game that can’t be won against the Galactic Empire, their resources are unlimited, their troops endless, and very few would dare to openly defy the Emperor. You must think of different strategies if the plan is to face the rulers of the galaxy and survive to tell the tale.

The other face of the Empire

Grand Admiral Thrawn, Grand Moff Tarkin, and Dr. Hemlock are some of the most prominent figures within the ranks of the Galactic Empire but finding individuals with such skills, commitment, and loyalty is very rare. Captain Mann is a living example of this, he’s the typical officer who uses the little power he has to benefit.

I think that the prevalence of this type of soldiers and officers are one of the main reasons why rebel groups were able to achieve so many small victories that eventually led to the Empire’s downfall. Mann was even visually out of shape, something that’s not common even on the lowest ranks.

An officer in charge of a minor outpost would certainly have more than enough time to exercise. Even an extremely busy man like Grand Admiral Thrawn trained his fighting skills against two droids. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a complaint, I’m glad that incompetence and laziness are fairly common. Without this, many of our favorite characters wouldn’t stand a chance.

Cassian Andor puts it perfectly in this phrase that is said during the first season of Andor. “They’re so proud of themselves, so fat and satisfied. They never imagine that someone like me would get inside their house”.

No one stays behind

One of the things that defines Omega is that she’s unwilling to leave anyone behind. She refused to leave Crosshair regardless of what he said, and now she risked everything for Batcher. Logically, the best thing to do would be to abandon them considering what’s at stake, but this doesn’t matter to the young clone.

Omega is unconventionally attached to those who are her family, even for Clone standards. The treason of Crosshair and then the loss of Tech really left some deep wounds in her. The second one was probably a huge trauma, after many episodes, they finally began to understand each other and form a bond that truly meant something.

The idea of losing more people is inconceivable for Omega, she even suggests coming back to get every clone but that’s just delusional. Still, it shows how much she cares about others and how far she’s willing to go to help.

Force 99 Reunion

Against every one of my predictions, Omega and Crosshair were able not only to escape but also to reunite back with their brothers. It’s great to see how their relationship has developed; when Omega started to live and travel with former Clone Force 99 none of them knew how to deal with a kid.

The only thing they were taught to do was to be good soldiers, and obviously, those skills don’t translate very well when it comes to dealing with people, especially someone as young, curious, and inexperienced as Omega.

Just like they taught Omega how to be a good soldier, I think she inadvertently showed them how to be “human”. Expressing how you feel with words or actions is something that Clones struggle with. During the Clone Wars, there was no time to learn about such things, especially in the military. Having good soldiers is the difference between victory and annihilation.

With the rise of the Empire, former Clone Force 99 remained a team but the presence of Omega is what turned them into a family. She’s the heart of the group and everyone knows it. Watching a soldier running to hug someone might not look like a big deal but I think that it speaks volumes of how much they care. It’s amazing to see how much they’ve changed because of her.

Crosshair’s presence is something that neither Hunter nor Wrecker expected, you can see how surprised they are to see their brother, maybe conflicted would be a better term. He betrayed and hunted them for quite some time, that kind of betrayal isn’t something that can be easily forgotten or forgiven.

Though, even if they don’t want him around, they are going to need every single bit of help available. Palpatine has made clear that Hemlock will get every resource needed for Project Necromancer to succeed; when I heard that the things that came to my mind were multiple Star Destroyers, bounty hunters, black ops, spies, Inquisitors, or who knows? maybe even Darth Vader himself.

Similar to many of the stories that happen during this era, our protagonists are outnumbered and outgunned but with the right plan, a lot of help from their allies, and extremely good luck they just might be able to come out on top.

Final Thoughts

While not “a lot” happened in this episode compared to the previous one, it was very cool to see how capable Omega is of handling different situations no matter how hard they are. Even if she’s become someone who can get out of most circumstances, what’s coming next will not be like most problems.

Fennec Shand and Cad Bane already tried to take her, considering that both of them appeared in the trailers we can assume that the Empire will re-hire the famous bounty hunters for the same purpose.

We also know that Asajj Ventress will eventually appear in at least one episode, she has always been a grey character. Everything she’s done is for her benefit, regardless if her actions could be considered “good” or “bad”. It’s uncertain if she’ll be on anyone’s side, but I can’t think of any better ally for Omega, Hunter, Wrecker, and Echo.

Easter Eggs and References

Rathars

The creature that captures and eats Captain Mann is a Rathar, the same beast that Han Solo and Chewie transport in The Force Awakens.

Garnac

The Trandoshan who plays against Omega looks exactly like Garnac, a hunter who enslaved Wookiees during the Clone Wars era. He was pushed off a cliff by Ahsoka Tano after she and other younglings fought to escape the Trandoshan slavers.

Meiloonrun Melons

The kid that tells Omega and Crosshair where the Imperials took Batcher is selling a fruit known as Meilooruns. This particular fruit was stolen in large quantities by Ezra Bridger and the other Spectres in Star Wars Rebels.

They’re flocking this way!

Some of the beasts that are released by Omega look extremely similar to the Gallimimus, a dinosaur species that appeared in the first film of Jurassic Park.
