CD Projekt Red invites new players to try out Cyberpunk 2077 for free for a few days on a modern console for limited play time in the last few days of March!
When is the Free Trial
CD Projekt Red just announced a free trial of Cyberpunk 2077. For a limited time anyone and everyone (who owns a console) will be able to give the game a try without having to purchase it. It will be completely 100% free for download.
The trial starts on Thursday, March 28th at 4 PM CET (8 AM PDT) and ends on Monday, April 1st at 8:59 AM CEST (March 31st, 11:59 PM PDT).
The Trial will require you to download the entire game. While you are limited to five hours of gameplay only, you are not limited to how far you can get during that time or at least this has not been mentioned anywhere at all. The total size is 99.3 GB and for PlayStation 5 and 103 GB for Xbox Series X|S.
What is included in the Free Trial
The Trial limits you to five hours of gameplay. This means that you will not be able to play for the entire four days while the trial is active. You will be able to play for up to five hours.
The five hours will likely be enough for you to get a feel of the game and decide if you want to purchase it after that. And this is, of course, CD Projekt Red’s ultimate goal – to make you want to buy it.
This play time will see you finish the intro mission, get into a mess with no easy way out and set the main plot of the entire game. If you choose to play on a lower difficulty, you will be able to go faster through more content and see more of the story.
The first few hours of the game you are kind of limited from exploring the open world anyway. You have to go through a few missions that will set things in motion for you before the game unleashes V into Night City.
You do not need to pay anything for the game. You also don’t need a subscription. You will need a current-gen console – PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
You will not be able to play more than once, though. Once the five hours are up, your account will be locked out of the game unless you purchase the full version. If you decide to buy the game later, you will be able to continue from the point you reached during the trial.
If you have more than one account on the same console, you can play through the game’s trial multiple times. The timer is tied to an account.
This trial only includes the base game. The Phantom Liberty Expansion is not part of it. Phantom Liberty is a mid-game content anyway and is not suitable for new players to try it out. Being dropped in the middle of the story is not going to make you like the game more, logic dictates.
If the game is generally not available in the region of the world where you are currently located, you will not get access to the trial either. The trial is only available where the game is sold. CD Projekt Red announced that there is no plan for a PC Trial for “technical reasons”.

Is it worth playing the Trial
Given the fact that this trial requires you to download the entire game, some of you may be hesitant to try it. Cyberpunk 2077 launched in an incredibly bad state on all platforms, but it was worse on Consoles compared to the PC version.
Now, three and a half years later, you have a chance to try the full game for free. And as a fan, I can vote with both my hands for it.
Cyberpunk 2077 today, after a ton of updates and patches, after a giant and amazing expansion and after several large and small updates after it, is an amazing game.
If you have not seen the Edgerunners Series on Netflix yet, I strongly suggest you watch that as well. It will immerse you into the Cyberpunk universe. All three members of our team who are taking care of the Cyberpunk 2077 coverage love what CD Projekt Red did with Phantom Liberty and 2.0. We urge you to give the game a try. After all, besides the ~100 GB download, there’s absolutely nothing you could lose.
At the time of this publication the base game costs ~30 Euro/USD on GOG and the bundle that includes the expansion, the Ultimate Edition, costs ~54 Euro/USD.
The main story, if you follow it as strictly as possible, will end in less than ten hours (still, depends on your play style). If you explore thoroughly, do side jobs (side missions) and collect things, the total time would be more like a hundred hours, give or take.
