The Murmuring Hollow Relic Ruins puzzle is the final installment of the Relic Ruins quests in Horizon Forbidden West. This guide will show you how to obtain the Ornament and start the important side quest A Friend in the Dark.

How to start the Murmuring Hollow Relic Ruins

The Relic Ruins quest is part of The Burning Shores DLC, which takes you to the new LA map. This content is for higher levels and becomes accessible after you complete the main story of Horizon Forbidden West.

The Relic Ruins “Murmuring Hollow” quest starts as soon as you discover the ruins. The location is at the southeast corned of the big island in the middle of the map.

On the northern side of the ruins is a campsite, which is actually partially related to the side quest you will start while in the area. Aloy makes a comment about it looking like an Oseram camp.

The secret reason why this quest exists

The Murmuring Hollow relic ruins quest is not a part of the Nights of Lights quest series. You can bring the ornament back to Stemmur at Las Vegas’ Hidden Ember. There is no extra special reward for it, though.

While solving the puzzle, you stumble on the side quest A Friend in the Dark. That one is a ton of fun to play through. Aloy meets an old friend, who is an incredibly positive and bright character.

Aside from the fun times while solving a puzzle in this game, the main purpose of completing the Relic Ruins puzzle is to unlock the side quest because its reward is awesome: the Legendary Spike Thrower Last Argument.

Technically, you can finish the Relic Ruins and skip the quest or come back and do it later, or never. I personally find it to be one of the best side quests in the game.

You meet an old friend, you do some exploration, some shooting and fighting and you get to make a dialogue choice in the end.

Instructions

  1. Start from the Campfire north of the ruins, located on the big central island of the Burning Shores map.
The campfire is in the southeastern corner of the island.
Head southwest and jump down to the tunnel. In front of you is the locked door leading to the Ornament and the Side Quest. Behind you (facing the metal doors) is the key, which you need to reach for the side quest. To your left are two old train carts.
Start from the Camp on the northern side of the ruins
  2. The upper train cart needs a battery. You can pry open the doors and test the lever inside.
Aloy will tell you that she needs to find how to power it up first. Next, you will have to find a way to go to the other side of the tunnel.
Pry open the door of the upper train cart
  3. Head down, past the second train cart, towards the broken elevator. At its entrance you will find a datapoint. Read it to learn that the password is hidden somewhere upstairs. The elevator is broken, though.
Read the datapoint next to the elevator
  4. Grapple hook to the roof of the elevator and climb the shaft to reach the higher ground.
Get up to the roof of the elevator shaft
  5. Exit through the northern side and jump down from the cliff to the lower platform. Land on the metal platform extending from the edge on the lower level. You will find yourself on the other side of the train carts.
  6. Pry Open the doors of the left cart and pull the lever that's inside. This will move the cart to the edge of the rail tracks.

  7. Exit the cart, pick up the battery and carry it to the other train cart. Place the battery on the other train cart, enter inside and pull the lever. Watch the cutscene and then exit the cart.
  8. Take the battery out from the train cart and carry it to the locked door. When you approach the locked door, Aloy will make a comment about a strange sound. There's someone inside the locked room. This is where the side quest "A Friend in the Dark" starts.
  9. Next, you have to get up to the top of the elevator shaft, to the roof of the building ruins. Get to the edge of the tunnel, where the train tracks are, call your Sunwing and fly up to the roof.
    Call a flying mount
  10. Grab the Metal Clamp with the Sunwing and use the Perch to land next to it.
You cannot pull out this clamp with the Pullcaster. You need the power of the Sunwing mount. There is no other way.
  11. Jump in the hole of the roof and in the room below grab the Ancient Supply Chest. Then grapple to the hook in the elevator shaft. Climb up and enter the top room.
Don't forget to loot another Ancient Supply Chest on your way to the top room.
    Reach the top floor
  12. Scan the datapoint to learn the password for the locked door downstairs where the train carts are.
  13. Jump down the elevator shaft. Use the grapple points and/or your Wing to avoid getting hurt from the height. Go to the locked door and input the password to unlock it: 1315.
Step 12 Get to the locked door and use the password to unlock it
  14. Pick up the Murmuring Hollow Ornament. This will complete the Relic Ruin quest "Murmuring Hollow. Your reward for it is 5000 XP and +2 Skill Points.
