Shadow of the Erdtree has received its first patch focused on reducing the initial difficulty of the expansion and commented on PC performance issues.
Shadow of the Erdtree has a new update, Calibration Patch 1.12.2, along with Patch Notes. They’re only adjusting difficulty, but it should make the game a bit easier and offered insight about potential PC performance issues. Praise Miquella!
Shadow of the Erdtree Difficulty Nerf
The main feature of Calibration Patch 1.12.2 for Shadow of the Erdtree is an adjustment to the difficulty curve that results in the expansion being easier early on.
Tons of players have been complaining that Shadow of the Erdtree is too difficult, to the extent that its Steam review score dropped to Mixed, despite fantastic reviews from critics.
The game’s Creative Director and father of the Soulslike genre, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has clarified that the high difficulty is intended and deliberate.
However, FromSoftware has opted to (or been forced to) reduce the difficulty.
It seems that Shadow of the Erdtree’s difficulty is mainly being adjusted by redistributing the damage boost and mitigation provided by the first few Scadutree Blessings, rather than outright strengthening the overall effect. However, they are also slightly buffing the impact of the final blessing.
In other words, the expansion should be easier early on after you spend a couple of Scadutree Fragments at a Site of Grace, and you should definitely do that before attempting to fight anything challenging, like the Blackgaol Knight, and will be a tad easier if you’ve found (and consumed) all of the Scadutree Fragments.
Remember, it’s not enough to just pick up the Scadutree Fragments. You have to spend them at a Site of Grace to receive the Scadutree Blessing.
It’s worth noting that FromSoftware has another card to play if players feel this is insufficient because they can still adjust the Revered Spirit Ash Blessing as well.
Shadow of the Erdtree PC Performance Issues
Bandai Namco addressed PC performance issues that some players have been experiencing, though it doesn’t sound like they actually fixed any issues yet.
It seems that Ray Tracing was getting turned on accidentally in some cases if you loaded a game save from a previous update. Basically, if you didn’t use a fresh save file, you might have Ray Tracing on.
Make sure this setting is turned off if you’re playing on PC and experiencing performance issues.

About graphics settings (PC version only)
We have confirmed a bug where the raytracing settings are automatically enabled if you have previously loaded saved data from previous game versions.
If your framerate is unstable, please check in the ‘SYSTEM’ > ‘Graphics Settings’ > ‘Raytracing Quality’ settings from the title menu or in-game menu to check if it has been unintentionally set to ‘ON’. Once set to ‘OFF’, Ray Tracing will no longer be automatically enabled.
Other balance adjustments as well as bug fixes are also planned for a future patch.
