This guide will show you how to reach the treasure chest in the the north end of The Great Basin on Akiva, containing the Flux Compressor upgrade material, required for the Ion Smoke Bomb ability in Star Wars Outlaws.
How to unlock the Ion Smoke ability
This ability is grante to you by The Scavenger expert, Temmin Wexley. You unlock him on Akiva after completing the Scavenger quest. He installs permanently on your speeder a hydrorepulsor, which allows you to traverse over deep waters. You will need this to reach the area where the Flux Compressor is.
The Flux Compressor is one of three required items to unlock the Ion Smoke Bomb upgrade. Before that, you also need to unlock the Smoke Bomb ability from The Mechanic.
Effect of Ion Smoke Bomb: In addition to its base effect, Smoke Bomb now deals ion damage, which temporarily disables devices and disrupts droids in the affected area.
Unlocking the Ion Smoke Bomb requires:
- Unlock the Smoke Bomb
- Flux Compressor
- 25x Durasteel
- 10x Ray Acelerator
Optionally, you can unlock the Concussive Smoke Ability from The Slicer. This adds yet another effect to the Smoke Bomb – it leaves the affected enemies staggered for 2 seconds.
How to get the Flux Compressor
The Flux Compressor material is available as loot in a treasure chest in a locked storage room up on a hill in the far northwestern end on the map of Akiva, in The Great Basin region. This is Rover’s Lair. The name will appear when you reach the door and the puzzle.
To reach the area where the treasure chest is, you will need the Ion and Power modes for your blaster. Head up the ramp to get to the elevated plateau. Technically, you don’t need the Speeder Boost ability, but it’s better if you use it while heading up the ramp.
Then turn right and follow the path up. When you reach the end, there will be two rocks blocking you path. Blow them up with the Power mode of your blaster. Keep following the path up.
You can take a short detour to the left (white arrow on the image below) for some extra loot. It’s just a few meters down this path and then you come back up to the rocks.
The next segment inculdes two short walls you have to climb and then a Grapple Hook. After you land on the platform on the other side, blow up the wall.
Climb up the next wall and then use the horizontal pipes to move to the right. After you land, look for the Grapple Hook up above on the ledge and use it to climb up.
You will arrive at the storage room. The door is opened when you activate the electricity. For that, you will have to activate all four power conduits and light up the four green lights above the door.
First, you have to clear the rocks on the left (conduit 1) and blow up the door to reveal the right (conduit 4) nodes.
The conduits don’t stay up for long, though. And each one has a different duration. Here is the proper order in which you have to hit the four nodes so they all remain on for long enough to open the door:
- Node 2
- Node 4
- Node 1
- Node 3
The Treasure chest inside contains the Flux Compressor. Now you can upgrade your Smoke Bomb ability to an Ion Smoke Bomb.
Get the additional treasure chest nearby
There is an additional treasure chest hidden in a cave nearby. The chest is down on the ground level. As you follow the path leading you down from the mountain, turn north and you will see a wall you can blow up.
Is the Ion Smoke Bomb ability useful
Just like I said in my walkthrough for the The Smoke Bomb ability, the use of Smoke Bomb is quite situational, but if you plan it wisely, it can be a lot more than an escape route.
The Ion Smoke Bom is just a free (after you do the work to find the parts to upgrade it, I mean) bonus to the bomb. The cooldown is not too short, but not overly long either. It’s ideal for when you screw up or open a door and stumble on an Imperial garrison because you didn’t use Nix Sense first to check the environment.
The ability is easy to use and its effect is more than enough to allow you to get to safety or take down any opponents caught in the smoke.
