How Armor and Clothing work in Avowed

Armor sets in Avowed are comprised of 3 pieces called the Armor and Clothing (Hands and Feet). Armor and Clothing occupy different slots and have vastly different impacts on combat. Some sets also have a Ring or Trinket associated with them.

Each piece of Unique gear, whether it be the Armor or Clothing, comes with 2 perks comes. Some armor pieces are part of a set by sharing the same name, and while the effect sets tend to synergize with each other and a specific build, there are no set bonuses.

You can find outfit pieces as loot from chests and corpses, purchase them from Merchants, or receive them as mission rewards. The sets as a whole are always located in the same region.

You can replace the visual appearance of any outfit item with another one. This feature is commonly known as transmog, though this game doesn’t allow you any specific modifications beyond the simple swap of one item’s appearance with another.

Armor

Armor is the primary piece of gear and the only one that’s upgradeable. It has defensive stats and weight class restrictions and cosmetically changes the appearance of the Envoy’s chest, arms, and legs.

Armor weight is classified as light, medium, or heavy, and this classification determines the Damage Reduction % along with the maximum Stamina and Essence penalties.

In reality, there are 8 different stat variations based on the weight and protection afforded by distinct types of real armor. There are a couple of mismatches, but terms in parentheses below are representative of the associated stats.

For example, Gambeson always refers to Light Armor with 8% Damage Reduction and -15 Stamina /-20 Essence.

As you can see, the lower the Damage Reduction %, the lower the maximum Stamina and Essence penalties.

These stats remain constant regardless of upgrade tier, but upgrading Armor is still important, but doing so only increases the additional flat damage reduction, not the percentage or penalties.

You’ll also take more damage and deal less against enemies depending on the difference in Quality tier, reaching +/-35% damage taken/dealt when there is a difference of 4 Quality tiers, ex. Fine (blue) +2 weapon vs Exceptional (purple) +3 armor.

Clothing

Clothing consists of handware and footwear. They have no defensive stats or weight class associated with them and take the form of things like gloves, bracers, and shoes to alter the cosmetic appearance of your hands and feet. Unlike Armor, Clothing is not upgradeable.

Blackwing Set

Appearance

Edgy black leather assassin attire with copper accents and feathery flourishes. It’s the same garb worn by high-ranking Paradisan Rebels.

Light Armor with +10% Damage Reduction and -20 Stamina/-20 Essence. Its Unique Effects work best for stealthy Ranger builds.

Appearance

Knight armor featuring a red tabard over chainmail with ornate pauldrons and gold accents, including the Steel Garrote’s insignia.

Heavy Armor with +30% Damage Reduction, -50 Stamina, and -50 Essence. Its Unique Effects work best for Fighter builds.

All-black, dark leather, scale, and plate elements all in monotone coal black.

Heavy Armor with +30% Damage Reduction and -50 Stamina/-50 Essence. It works best for Fighter builds dealing Frost damage.

A combination of brass metal, mustard yellow brigandine, and dark orange fabric.

Stats and Effects

Heavy Armor with +25% Damage Reduction and -45 Stamina/-45 Essence. For tank Fighter builds and players interested in the story, not gameplay.

Vailian Set

Appearance

Mirrors the uniform worn by the Rangers of Fior mes Ivèrno.

Stats and Effects

Medium Armor with +18% Damage Reduction and -35 Stamina/-30 Essence. It works best for melee-focused Ranger builds.

Appearance

Features a bright purple satin robe with gold accents. Misses the pointy hat for a classic Wizzard look.

Light Armor with +5% Damage Reduction and -20 Stamina/-10 Essence. It works best for Wizard builds.

Stormdancer’s Set

Appearance

Features a mix of silver scale mail as well as blue and brown leather.

Stats and Effects

Medium Armor with +15% Damage Reduction and -25 Stamina/-35 Essence. It works best for Ranger and Wizard builds that deal Shock damage.

You receive the entire set as a reward for making specific choices during the Heart of Valor quest in Shatterscarp.

Thirdborn Set

Appearance

The set allows you to look like a member of Thirdborn’s Tira Nui militia.

Stats and Effects

Heavy Armor with +25% Damage Reduction and -45 Stamina/-45 Essence. It works best as a transmog set because the effects are only situationally helpful.
