Castles in the Base game vs Expansion
Castles are the biggest and most fortified areas in the game. They are always surrounded by walls and heavily guarded by different types of enemies.
The base game of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has 38 castles you can explore. On Awaji island, you will find three castles. They follow exactly the same rules as the castles on the main land from the base game.
There is a ramp up in difficulty that is most noticeable in higher difficulty tiers. Tripwires and traps are waiting for you at every corner of Awaji, making your exploration a lot more dangerous and forcing you to be constantly looking around.
Awaji Island is only accessible if you own the Claws of Awaji expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Each of the castles has several areas, all very well guarded and the legendary chests are protected by Samurai Daisho, which you have to take down in order to be able to open the chests.

Castle Rewards List
Similarly to the base game, each castle has a Legendary Item inside a Legendary Chest, guarded and protected by Samurai Daisho and a ton of other guards. Being an endgame location, the castles on Awaji present a bigger challenge than the ones in the base game.
