Nightreign Revenant Build Guide and Tips

Everything you need to know about playing as Revenant, the Faith-based summoner class, in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Abilities and Relic Effects

Revenant’s abilities and Relic effects are centered around summoning the dead and supporting allies.

Passive Ability: Necromancy

Raise enemy ghosts to fight as allies.

When you defeat an enemy, there is a chance that you’ll bring it back to life as a ghost to help in combat. It’s a little bit of extra damage and tankiness, but nothing to write home (to your dead family) about.

There are 3 exclusive Relic effects that passively strengthen Necromancy, all of which only work in Depths of Night:

  • [Deep][Revenant] Increased Max FP upon Ability Activation
    • Each time you raise an enemy from the dead, your max FP is permanently increased by a tiny amount
  • [Deep][Revenant] Improved Strength, Reduced Faith
    • Strength CB, Faith SA
  • [Deep][Revenant] Improved Vigor and Endurance, Reduced Mind
    • Vigor DC, Endurance DC, Mind AB

The stat changing Relics effectively shift the scaling letter up or down by 1, and for Revenant, they’re meant to improve her proficiency with heavy weapons so you can better RP as a tiny doll with a giant stick.

Character Skill: Summon Spirit

Play lyre to summon fallen family to rally in battle.

Using the Skill makes Revenant pull out her harp. From there, you can use it to summon 1 of 3 Spirit Ashes, her fallen family members, by inputting a specific button. The Spirit Ashes are based on enemies that you can fight in Limveld, but they’re significantly weaker.

Helen the Page

Helen is a Page and deals a moderate amount of damage with her Thrusting Sword. She doesn’t have much health, but she’s small and nimble, so she has an easier time staying alive than the other summons.

If Helen is out when you activate Immortal March, she’ll use Ash of War: Repeating Thrust, which deals more damage than her usual attacks. She only does it once, and she’s not super accurate.

For some reason, they opted to give her that instead of firing an explosive salvo with the Pulley Crossbow like the High Pages have.

Frederick the Pumpkinless Head

Frederick is a Pumpkin Head enemy, except he doesn’t have the Pumpkin Head helmet to mitigate all the damage he will take from being a large, lumbering target. He hits the hardest but doesn’t survive long.

If Frederick is out when you activate Immortal March, he’ll do a spin move with his club that deals more damage than his normal attacks and can hit 3 times.

Sebastian the Home Depot Skeleton

Sebastian is a giant skeleton, just like the ones Tibia Mariners can toot into the semi-corporeal plane. He deals very little damage and can’t move on his own, but he has a long reach and can quickly revive a downed teammate if you summon him nearby.

If Sebastian is out when you activate Immortal March, he’ll fire a spectral laser from his eye, though it’s pretty slow to charge, so it doesn’t work well against moving targets.

Relic Effects

There is 1 exclusive Relic effect that strengthens Summon Spirit:

  • [Revenant] Power up while fighting alongside family
    • Grants a specific buff depending on which family member you summon:
      • Helen grants Continuous HP Recovery (1 HP/s)
      • Frederick grants Improved Attack Power (+10%)
      • Sebastian grants Improved Affinity Damage Negation (+20%)

The buffs last as long as the family member remains summoned, which usually means 15s (Ultimate Art duration) + however long it takes for the boss to sneeze in their general direction.

Ultimate Art: Immortal March

Release vengeful ire to make self and nearby allies immortal.

Like all Ultimate Arts, you are immune to damage during the activation animation, but the base effect revives downed teammates and makes already living Nightfarers and ghosts immortal for 15s.

To be clear, if you’re downed when Immortal March goes off, you do not get the immortality, so it’s better to use as a preventative measure rather than a revival tool in my opinion.

Each of the family members can deal roughly the same damage with their ultimate move, assuming they land the hit. I strongly recommend bringing out Frederick right before using Immortal March.

Frederick the Pumpkinless Head deals the most damage, lands hits most reliably with his attacks, and has time to use his move more than once. He also benefits the most from the immortality.

There are 3 exclusive Relic effects that strengthen Immortal March:

  • [Revenant] Strengthens family and allies when Ultimate Art is activated
    • +25% damage for 30s
  • [Revenant] Expend own HP to fully heal nearby allies when activating Art
    • Consume 50% of max health to heal all allies to full
  • [Revenant] Trigger ghostflame explosion during Ultimate Art activation
    • Deals ~500 damage at level 15, does not apply Frostbite or benefit from the damage boost Relic

The damage buff is by far and away the strongest, but the others are nice to have.

Revenant Unique Relics

Revenant has 3 unique Relics you get from her remembrance quest, and you can purchase an extremely synergistic one from the Collector Signboard for 3 Sovereign Sigils.

Attributes and Weapons

A Nightfarer’s attribute scaling, described with tier letters, determines which weapons they will be most effective with, defining their playstyle. Everyone wants to use weapons that scale well with their stats.

Revenant Attribute Scaling

Revenant is a support-oriented summoner. She can deal high damage with Incantations and moderate damage with Quality melee weapons, or Strength-scaling weapons in DoN. However, she’s not built to use weapons requiring high Dexterity or Intelligence.

Below, you can see how her actual stats work at levels 1, 2, 12, and 15. The numbers parentheses indicate the stat changes from using a specific Deep Relics (+ STR, -FTH and +VGR, -MND, +END).

Weapon Types

Asv Revenant, you’ll use Seals, Quality swords, and, in DoN, heavy Strength weapons. Other weapon types can be put to better use by other Nightfarers. She does not have any game-defined loot preferences.

Seals

Seals are a type of catalyst that allow you to cast Incantations, which scale with Faith and cost varying amounts of FP. Each Seal comes with 2 Incantations, with at least one coming from the religion associated with the Seal.

For example, the Frenzied Flame Seal is guaranteed to have a Frenzied Flame Incantation on it.

It seems that Incantations which would have required 2-3 attunement slots in Elden Ring proper are often accompanied by Rejection, one of the weakest spells in the game.

These ultra-powerful Incantations, like Scarlet Aeonia and Placidusax’s Ruin, are usually found on the basic Finger Seals, so you’ll want to visit a Mine to get the Smithing Stone [2] to upgrade them.

Revenant’s Cursed Claws

Revenant’s Cursed Claws are a one-of-a-kind weapon that Revenant starts with, oh, and they’re classified as Fists. They deal pure Magic damage and have significantly longer range but much slower attack speed than their given weapon type, though they can revive downed Nightfarers faster than most other weapons.

Out of all the starter weapons for each Nightfarer, it’s worth holding onto Revenant’s Cursed Claws and modifying them to apply Frostbite, Poison, or Bleed, and use a different Ash of War (Skill), like Hoarfrost Stomp.

Quality Weapons

Quality weapons scale more equally with both Strength and Dexterity, and she does particularly well with the purple/gold Straight Swords, Curved Swords, and Curved Greatswords.

Revenant can also do okay, or at least perform relatively better than other Nightfarers would with the following weapon types, though they are worse than the swords:

  • Heavy Thrusting Swords
  • Poleblades
  • Flails
  • Spears
  • Greatspears
  • Greatswords
  • Axes
  • Fists

Revenant has appropriate stats to deftly wield just about any legendary weapon that isn’t the Preferred weapon type for another Nightfarer, so others get first dibs, but Revenant should get all the legendary dregs.

We’re going with an ice cream sundae metaphor for Relic effects. You have your foundational effects that you really need to have as the ice cream, followed by the fudge and sprinkles as necessary to make them worthy of use, and finished with the cherries on top turning them into the delicious god roll sundae.

The sundae metaphor only applies to Revenant-specific Relic effects. Generic or universally useful effects will be listed afterwards.

Ice Cream

These are the foundational Relic effects you should seek out and equip as Revenant. If the Relic does not have at least one of these buffs, your Relic probably isn’t all that great.

  • [Revenant] Strengthens family and allies when Ultimate Art is activated
  • Max FP Up with 3+ Sacred Seals Equipped
  • Change compatible armament skill to Hoarfrost Stomp at start of expedition
  • Starting armament inflicts Frost
  • Attack power up when facing Frostbite-afflicted enemy

Fudge and Sprinkles

If a Relic has one of these effects, on top of the ice cream, it’s a pretty solid roll and may be worth equipping even if there isn’t a third effect.

  • Increased Maximum HP | FP | Stamina
  • Max FP increased for each Sorcerer’s Rise unlocked
  • [Revenant] Expend own HP to fully heal nearby allies when activating Art
  • [Revenant] Trigger ghost-flame explosion during Ultimate Art activation
  • [Revenant] Power up while fighting alongside family
  • Physical Attack Up +X
  • Improved [Religion] Incantations
    • Giant’s Flame
    • Dragon Communion
    • Fundamentalist
  • [Affinity] Attack Up +X
  • FP Restoration upon Successive Attacks
  • Improved Roar and Breath attacks
  • Art gauge fills moderately upon critical hit

Cherries on Top

The following are nice to have, and while they don’t contribute enough to be worth seeking out on their own, they are probably necessary to qualify as a god roll if they come in concert with the ice cream, the fudge, and the sprinkles.

  • Vigor | Mind | Endurance | Strength | Faith +X
  • Starlight Shards in possession at start of expedition
  • Improved Critical Hits
  • Critical Hit Boosts Stamina Recovery Speed
  • Stamina Recovery upon Landing Attacks +X

Generic Useful Relic Effects

These Relic effects are useful regardless of what Nightfarer you’re using:

  • Ultimate Art Gauge +X
  • Increased Maximum HP
  • Increased Maximum FP
  • Attack power increased for each evergaol prisoner defeated
  • Improved Poise and Damage Negation when knocked back by damage
  • Increased Rune acquisition for self and allies
  • Partial HP Restoration upon Post-Damage attacks
  • Character Skill Cooldown Reduction +X (if your skill has a cooldown)
  • Continuous HP Recovery
  • Slowly Restore HP for self and allies when HP is low
  • [Deep]Attack power increased for each Night Invader defeated
  • [Deep] Runes and Item Discovery increased for each great enemy defeated at a Fort
  • [Deep]Max stamina increased for each great enemy defeated at a Great Encampment
  • [Deep]Max HP increased for each great enemy defeated at a Great Church

Talismans Tier List

Below, you’ll find the tier lists for talismans and spells. Keep in mind that these are just default lists. Your mileage will vary depending on Relic selection.

Tier Legend

Many of you probably know how tier lists work, but there’s more meaning you can glean from one of my lists than simple “S is better than A is better than B and so on”.

  • S: These are the best talismans and spells in the game for Revenant. If you ever find one of these, it’s always worth equipping. Non-Revenant players should give these to you if they ever find them.
  • A: Great talismans and spells that might be the best you’ll find in your run. They are second only to the exceptional.
  • B: Good talismans and spells for Revenant, but they are more situational or have less impact than A or S-tier options.
  • C: Weak talismans and spells for Revenant that are better than nothing but have limited impact and situational.
  • D: Minimally useful for Revenant, likely far more useful for another Nightfarer.
  • F: Talismans and spells that are useless or detrimental to Revenant.

Talismans Tier List

I only recommend holding onto S, A, and, situationally, B tier talismans. Everything below that should be given to whoever else in the group can use it more right now.

Revenant’s best talismans buff Incanation damage, or provide some sort of improvement to FP recovery.

Incantations Tier List for Revenant

Revenant has some pretty solid options for Inantations. There aren’t a whole lot of bad choices, though some spells do have upgraded versions that make one better than another, so make sure you’re casting the strongest version.

Keep in mind that Revenant does not have any built-in FP regeneration, and many of the strongest spells are also the most expensive, so you need to be more deliberate about when you cast them.

Priority Locations for Revenant

Revenant benefits more than others from visiting Cathedrals, Mines, and Shacks. To be clear, other locations are fine, but these places are particularly worth visiting as Revenant.

Mines

It is worthwhile to visit a Mine if you plan to stick with Revenant’s Cursed Claws for the entire game or happen across an S-Tier spell on a white or blue seal

Always pick the Smithing Stone [2] that drops from the mini-boss in there. You can find upgrade anvills next to merchants, which are located at all Forts, War Camps, and Castles.

If you don’t end up needing it to upgrade your Seal or starter weapon, you should give it to a group member who had bad luck. I don’t recommend using a Smithing Stone [2] to upgrade any other weapon you find as Revenant. It’s better to upgrade your starter weapon than a white or blue sword or something.

Cathedrals

Cathedrals each have a lootable altar containing 3 seals. If you’re using a Relic that grants Increased Max FP for 3+ Seals (and you absolutely should), be sure to swing by a Cathedral (or shack) early in the game to get that FP boost and fish for good Incantations.

There are 2 different spots for the altar depending on the location of the miniboss. If the miniboss is in the basement, you’ll find the altar in an alcove directly across from the arena.

If the miniboss is on the main level, you’ll either get an altar or a treasure chest on the upper level, which you can reach by climbing up the scaffolding along the outside. Be prepared to fight a colony of bats or procession of Oracle Envoys.

Shacks

Shacks contain a box with multiple seals in it. They don’t have any sort of puzzle, but they aren’t listed on the map as relevant locations. Once you learn the layout, I guess you just need to have a bit of faith that they’re there…

Essential Weapon Passives for Revenant

Weapon passives are buffs granted to so long as they’re in your inventory. Unless they have the little hand next to the icon, your Nightfarer doesn’t need to be physically holding them in their hands. In most cases, these buffs will increase your chances of success than Relic effects.

Top Priority

You really need to get at least one of each of these if you want to maximize your effectiveness in combat. It is more important to have these effects than it is to have a bunch of legendaries with effects you don’t care about.

I’m hesitant to say this, but it may be worthwhile to hold onto a weapon that is more useful but not top tier to someone else in your group if it provides one of these buffs.

Probably don’t hold onto something like a Rivers of Blood if there’s an Executor in the group and they’re still using a blue weapon, but if you don’t expect them to use it as their main weapon, I say hold onto it for one of these passives.

  • Successive Attacks Negate Damage
  • Damage Negation Up While Casting Spells
  • Less Likely to Be Targeted
  • Reduced Spell FP Cost

Secondary Priority

These Relic effects are nice to have, but they are not as important as the top priority effects from the previous section. It can feel painful to throw one of these away in favor of a top-priority option, but it’s for the best.

  • Improved Sorceries | Incantations
  • Improved Charged Sorceries | Incantations
  • Improved Damage Negation at Full HP
  • Improved Critical Hits

Essential Non-Weapon Passives (Dormant Powers)

These passives drop directly from defeating bosses and are the only thing that drop from the end-of-day bosses. You can pick up one of them instead of a weapon, which is usually the way to go.

Top Priority

You should prioritize these Dormant Powers as Revenant whenever you see them.

  • Increased Maximum HP | FP | Stamina
  • Reduced FP Consumption
  • Improved Dodging
  • Improved Affinity | Physical Damage Negation
  • Improved Poise
  • Improved Stamina Recovery
  • Increased Sorcery & Incantation Duration
  • Ultimate Art Gauge Charge Speed Up

Secondary Priority

If you can’t select one of the Top Priority options, consider one of these instead.

  • Periodical Giant Glintblade
  • Violent Deluge of Rain While Walking
  • Flame of Frenzy While Walking
  • Improved Affinity Attack Power
  • Improved Sorceries & Incantations
  • Creates Holy Ground at Low HP
  • Critical Hit HP | FP Restoration
  • Damage Boosted after Critical Hit
  • Critical Hits Inflict Blood Loss

Revenant Costumes

Below are all 6 of Revenant’s appearances. Remembrance skins are unlocked after completing his/her quest. Dawn and Darkness skins are available as soon as you unlock the appearance changer. The named outfits are based on characters from Dark Souls and unlocked after you defeat Heolstor for the first time.
