How to start The Way of the Kusarigama

You’ll need to gain access to Teshio Ridge and survey the land. Far to the north, you’ll be able to find the location of the Kusarigama Master. Make your way to Owl Mountain and look for the Owl and Bear Statues.

Following the wind will lead you to a small bridge accompanied by wooden owl and bear statues. Go across to meet Master Enomoto.

Help him defeat the Nine Tails Shinobi in the area and he’ll agree to teach you the way of the kusarigama.

Owls and Bears

Master Enomoto will compare the kusarigama to owls and bears. The kama portion of the weapon strikes swiftly and quietly, while the kusari-fundo hits with the strength of a bear.

Cut the bamboo blocking the path with R1. When you reach the bear statues, break the pots they’re holding by pressing R2. Holding R2 won’t do anything at this time, that comes later.

Cross the tightrope that appears and follow the path, collecting any materials you run across. Now it’s time for some hands-on experience, use the kusarigama’s heavy attacks to break the shinobi’s shields and use its light attacks to finish them off.

Ice Cold Training

Hold R2 to use Ferocious Whirlwind against the training dummies. You’ll hit them, but you won’t be able to damage them.

After failing to damage the dummies, follow Master Enomoto as you jump and climb to your next destination. Perform the Ferocious Whirlwind against the next group of targets to start a cutscene.

While this would be a great time for a hot spring, Atsu must embrace the cold to further her training. Enter the pool and reflect on Willpower or Warmer Days to proceed.

Frozen Flurries of Fury

After cooling off, you’ll be able to have another go at the training dummies. Hold R2 to charge Ferocious Whirlwind and destroy the dummies.

Destroy the Training Dummies Ferocious Whirlwind

After destroying the dummies, you’ll need to duel Master Enomoto. Use heavy attacks to break his shield then go in with light attacks. Keep attacking him until he gives in and a cutscene starts.

Your last task is to survey the valley. To the right is the Nine Tails den that’s holding prisoners, while to the left is a Port Village where you’ll need to free a blacksmith.

You will now complete the quest and fully unlock the Kusarigama! This is a great weapon for breaking shields if you’re out of Oni’s Flames and dealing area of effect damage when surrounded.
