How to start Ghosts of the Past
Before you can start Ghosts of the Past, you’ll need to complete the following tasks:
- Reach Ishikari Plain and defeat The Oni
- Reach Teshio Ridge and defeat The Kitsune
- Learn the Way of the Odachi
Once you have completed these tasks, return to your home in the Yotei Grasslands. Someone will be waiting by the ginko tree, walk to him to start the mission.
Ghosts of the Past
This mission is very short as all you’ll need to do is show Jubei around your home and relive memories both good and bad. At one point, you’ll be able to play Zeni-Hajiki against Jubei.
Oyuki arrives much to Jubei’s displeasure, and she warns that the Saito Brothers are going to Oshima Coast. After the cutscene, you’ll complete Ghosts of the Past and start Chapter II: The Onyro.
How to start The Storm Breaks
After completing Ghosts of the Past, meet Jubei and Oyuki at the Oshima Coast Gatehouse. This will beon the west end of the Yotei Grasslands.
Open the gate with Oyuki to trigger a cutscene. The Saito Brothers have recently come through here and have massacred the Matsumae stationed here. Thing’s aren’t looking great and you’ll need to find Jubei, starting The Storm Breaks.
Fight against the Saito Brother’s Forces
After traveling through the ruined village, you’ll find Jubei. Follow him and his forces to find the invasion going on ahead. The battle is brutal ahead and you’ll need to get into the thick of it.
Charge into the outlaw’s outpost with your horse and defeat the soldiers in the area. Once cleared, you’ll want to go through a path to the right of the bridge.
Immediately crouch behind cover when you enter the next area as there are four gunners ahead. Only move forward to the next series of crates for cover after they fire their first volley.
Once you are close enough, they’ll stop using their teppo and attack with melee weapons. A single can take out a large portion of your health, adding three more ensures your death.
Defeat the Saito Outlaws in the area, loot the purple chest for supplies, then meet up with Jubei at the rocky opening ahead.
Survey the battlefield ahead, looking at the destroyed gate to the right, the dead bodies in front, and the gunners to the left.
Reach the Gate
When night falls, go towards the palisade wall. Start by taking out the three gunners ahead of you. Your allies will help you assassinate extra enemies for this area.
Ahead and near the wall are three soldiers, one of which has a torch and is patrolling the area. Wait until the patrolling soldier goes to the right, then snipe them with the Yumi bow. Assassinate the two remaining soldiers once the patrolling soldier is dead.
Ahead is a Matsumae camp now occupied by Saito’s Outlaws. Stick to the right, climb over the short ledge and kill the lone soldier there.
Go through the ripped cloth wall, assassinate the soldiers near the campfire, and enter the tent to find supplies and a purple chest.
To the right of the tent are some rocks you can climb up. From there you can assassinate the two soldiers near the campfire, loot the purple chest, and go through the broken palisade wall.
Go up the cobblestone wall and into the tall grass to the right. Hug the right wall and look for the bamboo scaffolding ahead. Assassinate any soldiers in your way and go through the opening in the scaffolding.
Using the Musket
After a cutscene, Jubei will distract the outlaws in an attempt to help the prisoners. Meanwhile you must look at the gunpowder barrels ahead with your spyglass, and fire your newly acquired tanegashima (musket) on those barrels.
The rest of the encounter will have you fire on any remaining outlaws while getting familiar with the musket. It’s very powerful but it has a long reload time when compared to the bows.
Oshima Coast
After a cutscene, you’ll find yourself at Jubei’s home of Oshima Coast. Don’t let the beautiful scenery distract you, this area is riddled with the best soldiers Saito has to offer.
Survey the land ahead with your spyglass and target Matsumae Castle, and a village to the right of the castle.
You now have the options to meet the Matsumae solder in Benten Port, or find Matchlock Murata if you’re looking to unlock firearm upgrades.
