What are Charms
Charms are equippable items that improve Atsu’s combat performance in some way. Other games refer to these sorts of items as Accessories, Rings, Talismans, or also Charms.
Charm Categories
Each Charm belongs to one of six categories. Each category buffs a specific aspect of combat and is affiliated with a specific branch of the Growth skill tree. You can press R3 to filter between these categories.
Onryo Charms all have something to do with Terrifying enemies, Ornyo’s Howl, or something in the Onryo tree. They synergize best with the Onryo’s Armor.
Melee Charms improve your performance with specific weapons and Quickdraw items, and offer additional benefits related to Standoffs and Disarmings. Many of them are highly situational, so you probably won’t take more than 1-2 for a given Armor unless you’re tailoring your build for a specific boss fight.
Ranged Charms improve your performance with bows and the Tanegashima (flintlock rifle). They synergize best with the Dragonfly Armor and Ginji’s Guard Armor, but make sure to consider their interactions with your preferred ranged weapon(s).
Defense Charms improve your survivability, offer additional benefits for parrying, or heal you. Several are strong enough to be worth using with most Armors, but the bulk synergize with Armor of the Undying, Bounty Master Armor, and Taro’s Armor.
Utility Charms are a grab bag of generic effects with a small emphasis on buffing Quickfire weapons and status effects. Many synergize with the Nine Tail Armor and a few related to item collection synergize with Robes for Sitturaynu.
Stealth Charms improve your ability to safely assassinate enemies and ensure you’re prepared if ever you get noticed. They synergize best with the Crimson Kimono, and, to a lesser extent, the Nine Tail Armor.
Synergies
Armors in Ghost of Yotei tend to synergize with a specific Charm category, and the more Charms you equip in a given category, the stronger you’ll be with that aspect of combat, so it’s beneficial to equip Charms that synergize with the Armor you’re using.
That being said, some Charms are strong enough that they’re worth considering regardless of the Armor you’re using, and some specialized Charms aren’t all that useful.
Don’t pursue synergy for its own sake. Make sure you’re getting something beneficial out of it. Some Charms do conflict with each other in a straightforward way
Charm Types
Charms are also classified as either Major or Minor. Major Charms tend to be stronger individually, but that’s just a rule of thumb, and you will perform better in combat with a combination of Major and Minor Charms that synergize with each other.
At the start of the game, you have fewer available Charm slots, only some of which allow you to equip Major Charms. As you find more Charms, you gain more Charm slots and all of them will get upgraded automatically so they can hold either Major or Minor Charms.
Upgradeable Charms
Some Charms get stronger the more you do something specific related to the Charm, similar to how you upgrade your other equipment. Once you’ve satisfied the requirement, your Charm is upgraded automatically. Some Charms can be upgraded multiple times.
Upgradeable Charms are often, but not always, stronger than their non-upgradeable counterparts. Just because a Charm is upgradeable doesn’t mean you should use it. Ask yourself whether the effect will be useful for your build compared to an alternative.
How to get Charms
While you can get Charms as quest rewards and from Fox Dens, they most consistently come from completing Shrines, winning at Zeni Hajiki, and buying them from Taro the Scavenger.
Taro the Scavenger shows up throughout Ezo and has a permanent store at Dead Man’s Tree in Tokachi Range. However, some of the Charms only get put up for sale after you complete a specific quest first. Refer to the associated Region to get a rough idea of when you’ll be able to get it.
Full List of all Charms
In the table below you will find a complete list of every major and minor charm with the effects, whether they are upgradeable or not, and where to find them. The table is interactive. You can sort, filter and search it. Elements in green denote the upgradeable aspect of a given Charm, with the fully upgraded version shown.
