Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.2: Changes Overview

Adrian by Adrian|

In Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.2 we get new vehicles and lots of customizations for them as well as for V, redesigned Photo Mode and many other smaller tweaks to allow you to “express yourself”.

CD Projekt RED was supposed to have ended development and support for Cyberpunk 2077 long ago. Yet, they continue to support the game with new updates and not just hotfixes, but new features as well.

In 2.2 we will see a lot of functionality that was previously available through mods added natively into the game. This means console players will be able to enjoy them too!

This isn’t new for CD Projekt RED with 2.0 being the biggest mods acquisition and adaptation update to date. They had a similar approach with the Next Gen version for The Witcher 3.

Like almost all major updates in the past few years, after the “we have to fix our broken game” era, every patch has a theme. As Pavel Sasko stated it himself on the livestream announcing 2.2 earlier today, the theme for 2.2 is to allow you to “express yourself”.

Update 2.2 Availability

Update 2.2 to Cyberpunk 2077 is available for download from any platform and store where the game is available. It is free to all players who own at least the base game.

The patch is rather large, but this has been the norm with Cyberpunk 2077 almost always. 2.2 on GOG is ~82 GB. For Xbox it is reportedly more than two times smaller, at ~36 GB. We don’t have yet data for what the size would be on PlayStation.

This update is developed in collaboration with Virtuos, a studio dedicated to supporting movie and game studios. Over the last twenty years, the studio has worked on renowned titles like Halo Infinite, The Callisto Protocol, Horizon: Zero Dawn/Forbidden West, League of Legends, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and many more.

New Vehicles

Ten new vehicles are available for purchase from the Autofixer shop. These are popular models that were not available to the players before. You can now purchase and own them in the game. Below is the full list:

  • Mizutani Shion MZ1
  • Mizutani Shion Targa MZT
  • Thorton Galena GA32t
  • Thorton Colby CST40
  • Archer Quartz EC-L r275
  • Quadra Type-66 640 TS
  • Quadra Type-66 680 TS
  • Mizutani Hozuki MH2
  • Villefort Deleon V410-S Coupe (Phantom Liberty only)
  • Mahir Supron FS3-T (Phantom Liberty only)

We have an dedicated overview of the ten new vehicles in Update 2.2. And we have also included all of them in our complete catalog to all vehicles in Cyberpunk 2077.

New Vehicle Customization Options

Two new major tools, CrystalCoat and TwinTone, were added to the game from popular mods that will allow you to further customize your own cars. Johnny’s presence will also be more… present while you drive around Night City.

All vehicles that can use the CrystalCoat and TwinTone are marked on Autofixer terminal with a spray icon on the top left corner, so you know they have additional customization options.

This is also shown in your vehicle list. For example, in the following image of my available cars, only one has the CrystalCoat feature. The icon is very small but still noticeable.

Cyberpunk 2077 Crystalcoat available cars

Customizations for new vehicles are only available for player cars. If you “borrow” a car from someone else on the street, you will not have the option to customize its color scheme, regardless of the vehicle’s model.

CrystalCoat

Developed by Rayfield in the game and initially designed and available only on their own brand cars, the CrystalCoat technology spreads onto other sports and luxury brands now as well:

Apart from the visual appeal of the tech, you will be able to utilize it in-game to mask your car out of sight while being chased by the police. This will fool them and lower your NCPD Wanted level.

You can change the color of the headlights, inner side, and outer side of the car. If for any reason the combination is not what you expected, simply reset it.

For vehicles with paint jobs that include any sort of stripe, the car’s inner side is considered the stripe while the outer side affects the remaining color of the car. The following example shows how this interaction works.

If you decide that a color combination is worth saving, simply save it. It will appear on the right panel until you delete it.

It’s important to know that if the vehicle receives enough damage, the CrystalCoat will be disabled. Minor scratches won’t cause this but crashing and bullets will certainly do so.

I encountered a bug where the CrystalCoat option would not be available on cars that met the requirements, this was solved by just exiting the car and getting in again.

TwinTone

The TwinTone is a Kiroshi design in-game that allows you to scan and replicate paint jobs of other vehicles around you. Generic Colors can be applied to all your cars while specific ones are reserved for just one model.

TwinTone same car model

Scan a nearby vehicle and go to the Twintone tab. If the color is available it will display the cost of this purchase.

Twintone scanning

Once you pay for it, it will be added to the TwinTone database. In my case, since I already had another color scheme saved it was placed in the second slot.

If you do this with the exact models of the car you are currently driving it will be an exact copy. I wish we could use this feature to confuse the NCPD, how funny would that be?

Johnny in the Car

Inspired (or maybe in direct collaboration with?) by a popular mod, in Update 2.2 you will see Johnny Silverhand spawn in the car while you drive around Night City. This feature becomes available after Act I of the game (after you “meet” Johnny).

Johny spawns in car inside view

There are several limitations and requirements for Johnny to be able to spawn. He may appear next to you on the front passenger seat or on the back. This seems somewhat randomized.

Johnny will not appear when you are in combat or when you are on an important mission where he is otherwise involved.

Johny spawns in car

Johnny will usually spawn while you are freely roaming the streets looking for trouble or opportunities to earn more additional Street Cred. He will not be very active, and you shouldn’t expect new and unique dialogue with him while driving.

SmartFrames

SmartFrames are digital pictures placed in your apartments. These frames can be customized with your in-game photos.

All you have to do is click the SmartFrame and a panel with all your pictures will display on the right side.

Simply choose your favorite picture, it could be a car, your love interest, or whatever you want.

Redesigned Photo Mode

Photo Mode has been redesigned, and a lot of new features were added, expanded and improved:

  • Drone Camera is now a free camera instead of an orbital camera centered around V.
  • Increased camera range.
  • Full Collision (ON/OFF) – determines whether the camera respects in-game object collisions.
  • Lock Camera (ON/OFF) – locks the camera to avoid misclicking and ruining the frame.
  • Precise Camera (ON/OFF) – slows the camera down for easier aiming.
  • Aspect Ratio (PC-only. Custom-resolution screenshots are not available on consoles. Console systems can only export images in the standard 16:9 format.)
  • Characters tab: Spawn up to 3 NPCs for your photo, with a list of over 20 characters to choose from. You can adjust their expression, pose, and position.
  • Lighting tab: Spawn and adjust light sources.
  • Fixed the Depth of Field ghosting issue.
  • Added an Effect Intensity slider.

Out of all this features, my favorite one is the ability to spawn some of the most iconic characters in our pictures. There are so many fun things to do.

However, I must point out that it feels clunky and limited. It is hard to properly position the characters even in big open areas and there is only one action pose available, but I have no doubt that this will be improved. Here’s Adam Smasher waiting impatiently for his food.

New Character Customizations

116 new character customizations are now accessible and available in the Character Creator tool. Previously the game offered about 200, which means that Update 2.2 alone added about 50% more.

Here is a list of the new customizations per category:

  • 32 eye colors
  • 18 lip makeup types
  • 17 nail colors
  • 10 cheek makeup types
  • 16 eye makeup types
  • 4 face scars
  • 5 eyebrow shapes
  • 4 face tattoos
  • 2 body tattoos
  • 8 cosmetic face cyberware options

Creating a character is something exciting for many people and tedious for poeple like myself. The new Character Randomizer is an easy way to make V look like a true citizen of Night City without having to spend an hour trying to find the perfect look.

Misc Changes and Improvements

Rephrased objectives for quests that tell you to wait a specific amount of time to progress. The game is designed in a way that doesn’t always allow players to simply skip in-game time to advance the objective, instead requiring them to continue playing to trigger the next event.

You will now be able to properly rebind W and S to different actions other than their default settings in the Vehicle category.

Optimized threading system to improve performance by up to 33% on Intel Arrow Lake based CPUs.

Unannounced in any patch notes, and buried here in this segment in our article (intentionally), we want to share with you the fact that there is a new secret scavenging hunt mission added to the game. CD PROJEKT RED partnered with Balatro to add 10 Joker sign locations that you have to discover in Night City.
