EA is working on a brand new Open World Star Wars Online AAA game, according to a new Job Opportunity they are offering currently. The studio is looking for a Lead Online Engineer to join the development team.
The position demands good leadership and 10+ years of experience with game development among other things. The employee will lead a team of Engineers to accomplish the goals for the product as well as be an effective people manager to grow the talent on the team. He or she will report to the project Technical Director and ensure that the Online systems are meeting the robustness and performance requirements.
We are looking for a talented and experienced Lead Online Engineer to join an established, experienced team of developers working on a AAA Star Wars title in development at EA Vancouver. This is an opportunity to join a veteran team to design, architect, and implement the Online infrastructure for the project, while working with industry-leading central technologies.
As MassivelyOP reports, this is both great and horrible news, based on your point of view and where you stand regarding EA’s success with the Star Wars Franchise when it comes to video games. For good or evil… mostly for evil (based on recent results) EA holds exclusive rights to develop and release video games in the Star Wars universe. Until their contract is broken or expires, nobody else is allowed to contribute or compete with them on that front.

The disaster that was Star Wars: Battlefront 2‘s launch with the horrible microtransactions scheme struck a deep blow in EA’s belly and caused Disney to intervene and demand the system be taken down and reworked. We just saw the first version of the Revamped Progression System in Battlefront 2, but many (me included) would wonder isn’t this coming to late now? Can the game be saved? What if the new game walks the same path and makes the same mistakes as DICE did by implementing MTX deep into the core of a $60 game? I wont even mention the feat I have in my heart for Anthem. I only pray that EA learned the valuable lesson from Battlefront 2’s MTX failure and the gaming community’s uprising.
Last year we saw the ending of yet another game studio – Visceral. The developers were working a new Star Wars game, but apparently the EA overlords were not happy with the direction of that game and not only canceled the whole project (featured image is from that game), but closed down Visceral. EA is not considering the single player games to be worthy and profitable in this modern day and age any more.
What about SWTOR? Of course, with something like this we, the fans would have to start asking ourselves what is to become of the current Star Wars MMO game – Star Wars: The Old Republic. Based on the information in the job notice, this position is for a brand new game, not currently running one. Whatever project EA is working on, it is a new game and we have yet to discover more information about it in the coming days, weeks… months?
What do you think? Is this good or bad news for you?
