Everybody (me included) expected Cyberpunk 2077 to be a game strictly following the established by CD Projekt Red standards with their Witcher series – a third person gameplay with a ton of story and choices. Well, it turns out this is only partially true for their new game. With an incredible city to explore, a ton of lore to learn and CD Projekt Red’s insane attention to the smallest details, this game cannot arrive soon enough! Am I right?
Now, let me tell you a few things you may not know about the game yet!
Cyberpunk 2077 will be a fully fleshed out role-playing game from first person perspective. It will not be a shooter and the developers are emphasizing on that in any situation they can. It will not be a shooter with RPG elements, it will be a true RPG with shooting elements.
The game will take you to an incredibly detailed fictional American city in the distant future. Everything around you will be hand-crafted with an incredible attention to the smallest details. Night City is located somewhere between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is inspired by both of these giant megalopolises.
V
You will take the role of V – the main character. At the very beginning you will get to shape your own origins – where you come from, what your past hides and more. You will even get to pick the gender – male or female.
As V you will be taking the most dangerous jobs that nobody else dares to. Your actions will define your character, but more importantly – what you do will reflect drastically on the environment around you. Your choices and decisions will decide the fate of characters you meet and interact with as well as the whole outcome of the narrative of the game. Whether you play as a male or female, V will be fully voiced over.
Regarding the name of the character – why it is just V, is still a mystery. One thing CD Projekt Red wants to be known, though – they feel like you can better connect to your character and his or her story if they have a name that is known and spoken in the game.
LEVELING AND PROGRESSION
There will be a full character creation tool, where you will also have the opportunity to create an identical portrait of your true self or… who you have always wanted to be, but couldn’t or… you get my point! It is entirely up to you to create and shape what CDPR calls “the life-path of your character” from this point going forward.
The game will not make you pick a predefined class when you start. Instead you will be able to decide what abilities you want to learn or upgrade and how you would prefer to play. You can be almost anything you like – a net-runner, techie, solo player…
Leveling and experience is split into two main sections. You will be earning different types and amounts of experience based on the types of missions you complete. The Core missions (part of the main story narrative) will reward you with “standard” experience. The secondary experience is “street cred”. You will earn this by completing side missions. Based on your street cred level, you will gain access to new and different vendors and fixers – that’s what mission givers are called. Fixers are the brokers of the mercenary life. Some of the side missions, or jobs, are given by them.
There will be both melee and ranged combat. The team has learned a lot from their experience with the melee combat in The Witcher 3 and have brought the best and parts into Cyberpunk 2077 and improved it even further. Here, as you know already, it will all happen from first perspective, as opposed to Geralt’s adventures.
The ranged weapons are divided into three categories. Power weapons are much like the standard weapons we know today. Tech weapons focus on penetrating through walls, objects, NPCs. Smart Weapons are the most advanced type and will be able to track and follow a target across the game.
Vehicles? Of course! So far the developers have only confirmed that you will be able to drive a car and a motorcycle. They insist on keeping a tight lip around what other things you will be able to mount or use. One thing is certain, though – there will be more alternatives!
NIGHT CITY
The story and all characters in it have a very noir feeling and vibe to them. Everything is heavily inspired by the original Cyberpunk 2020 game. CD Projekt Red have been working for years very closely with the creator of the official rulebook for the P&P RPG – Mike Pondsmith.
The game’s setting is a dark futuristic alternative reality. Night City will not represent our future in 2077. It is more like the 1990’s version in the future. The authentic dark and depressing atmosphere, a city on the brink of total chaos, where most people live under the poverty line and the crime levels are through the roof. All of this and more drives the game developers from CD Projekt Red to believe that they can best portrait and present it in a first person perspective.
Night City is located in California and will have six distinctively different in many aspects districts. When it comes to exploration abilities, the verticality is going to be a huge factor. You will not just be restricted to the flat map and roaming the streets all the time. Something the devs call “mega buildings” will allow you to explore certain huge indoor areas, where you will meet authentic life, encounter various NPCs and mission givers.
Devs refuse to give a number of “how big the map is”, because they are still building it and the vertical exploration element in the game is going to contribute a ton to the total size of Night City.
Like with the Witcher series, Cyberpunk 2077 will focus on personal stories of your character and all other living beings that you interact with.
A FEW NOTES
The game will offer full day and night cycles. From now on CD Projekt Red promises to be more open about the game’s development. Following the apology from the hidden message inside the E3 trailer, the company wants to start revealing more exciting details about the development of Cyberpunk 2077. One thing they will likely never reveal is the storyline. This is a well-guarded secret… for now.
This information was taken from series of interviews given by CD Projekt Red developers before various media, including gamerslice, GameSpot and more.
There are two more days of the event and more information will likely be revealed. Stay tuned! To make sure you don’t miss anything, sign up to receive new posts notifications.
