Adam Kiciński, CEO at CD Projekt Red, confirmed that the studio will produce more Witcher games based on the world created by Andrzej Sapkowski! Not Witcher 4, though!
In an interview for the polish website bankier.pl, CD Projekt Red’s CEO Adam Kiciński explained that the studio is not done with the Witcher games. What they have been always saying is that the first three games were meant originally as a trilogy to tell Geralt’s story. There will be more video games based on the Witcher series and the world created by Andrzej Sapkowski, but they will not be about Geralt.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the final game about Geralt. CD Projekt Red is currently focusing on Cyberpunk 2077, which totally blew us away with its E3 trailer this year. There is another separate game currently being developed by the polish studio, but any details about it are being kept secret for now. The studio wants us, the fans, to focus on what’s coming next.
Cyberpunk doesn’t even have a release date yet and has been in development for at least five or six years now. It is unlikely that the game will be ready before the end of 2019, though nothing has come out yet in terms of plans and release dates officially from CD Projekt Red. There will come a time when the other game will be ready to be revealed and more information will be shared about it.
The first three Witchers were by definition a trilogy, so we simply could not name the next game The Witcher 4. This does not mean, of course, that we will leave the world of The Witcher, created by us for over a dozen years. The Witcher is one of two franchises on which to build in the future activities of the company. Today, unfortunately, I can not reveal anything more.
The fact that there wont be another Witcher game about Geralt, doesn’t mean a game will never be released, nor does it imply that the studio is actually working currently on one. It is, however, very possible that this is “the other game”. It’s just too early in its development cycle yet.
Adam Kiciński confirmed in his interview that the Witcher universe is one of two main franchises the polish studio will focus on for their future projects. “So far, we have sold over 33 million copies of The Witcher, and we have an appetite for much more.” – he explained.
In another interview for PCGamer from January, CD Projekt Red’s co-founder Marcin Iwiński also hinted what “we’ve devoted a big part of our lives to The Witcher and it means a lot to us, so we’re definitely not abandoning this universe”.
To many of you the confirmation of more Witcher games might not be news so much as something well known and expected. It’s nice to see it plainly said and confirmed by none other, but both the CD Projekt Red CEO and the studio’s co-founder. If you follow my activity on YouTube, you know I have many (many!) videos on the Witcher and as a huge fan, I am very excited for what the studio will reveal next after Cyberpunk 2077 is done.
Actually, I remember, CD Projekt Red announced their next game officially with a short teaser trailer way back in 2012, when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was not even out yet. I hope they keep this tradition and announce a game with a title from the Witcher universe to be coming out some time after Cyberpunk 2077.
Among the fans there has been one giant rumor… more like a wish, actually – a stand-alone video game with Ciri taking the role of the protagonist. What do you think? Are you ready for more Witcher-based games and what type of game exactly would you love to see from CD Projekt Red after Cyberpunk 2077?
