Cyberpunk 2077 release delayed with 21 days

CD Projekt Red announced today another delay to the massive single player RPG Cyberpunk 2077. Following already a few delays the current date until now was November 19. Today that changes. The new release date is now December 10, 2020! Read below for more details!

Today Polish developer CD Projekt Red announced what most of us probably secretly expected to hear, but hoped we’ll not have to.

Cyberpunk 2077 is delayed. Again! The release date is now set to December 10, 2020. Company CEOs Adam Badowski and Marcin Iwinski released an official announcement for that through a public letter (much like the previous time).

A few weeks ago CDPR announced that the game has gone gold, if you recall. In my news article I explained briefly what that means and that we should expect a huge Day 0 patch. In today’s letter CDPR confirmed that. It’s really standard practice these days.

Adam and Marcin attempt also to explain and defend the decision to move the release date with only 21 days. For such a massive title this seems pitiful time and it’s not easy to believe how much they will be able to do in these three weeks time they are giving themselves as a “bonus”.

One thing is clear, at least in my head, I want Cyberpunk 2077 to receive proper criticism for its gameplay and story qualities and not have all the major outlets nit-pick the silly little bugs that creep up here and there as V roams around and explores the Districts of Night City.

And I personally can benefit further from this wait, as may many others. I planned a Video Card Upgrade for Cyberpunk 2077 to be able to fully experience this “next-gen” title the way it is designed to be experienced. As we all know the current situation with Nvidia’s RTX 30 is not very optimistic and quantities are a miss in most regions of the world, especially where I live (Bulgaria).

CD Projekt Red do not depend on anybody except for their customers – us, the gamers. They have no overlord company to push and squeeze them into impossible deadlines.

They can afford to take as much time as they need with their product. And I think that over the years they have earned our respect and now we should gather our strengths and wait another 21 days. :)))

Hey Everyone

Today, we’ve decided to move the release date of Cyberpunk 2077 by 21 days. The new release date is December 10th.

Most likely, there are many emotions and questions in your heads, so, first and foremost, please accept our humble apologies.

The biggest challenge for us right now is shipping the game on current-gen, next-gen and PC at the same time, which requires us to prepare and test 9 versions of it (Xbox One/X, compatibility on Xbox Series S/X, PS4/Pro, compatibility on PS4, PC, Stadia)… while working from home. Since Cyberpunk 2077 evolved towards almost being a next-gen title somewhere along the way, we need to make sure everything works well and every version runs smoothly. We’re aware it might seem unrealistic when someone says that 21 days can make any difference in such a massive and complex game, but they really do.

Some of you might also be wondering what these words mean in light of us saying we achieved gold master some time ago. Passing certification, or “going gold”, means the game is ready, can be completed, and has all content in it. But it doesn’t mean we stop working on it and raising the quality bar. On the contrary, this is the time where many improvements are being made which will then be distributed via a Day 0 patch. This is the time period we undercalculated.

We feel we have an amazing game on our hands and are willing to make every decision, even the hardest ones, if it ultimately leads to you getting a video game you’ll fall in love with.

Yours,

Adam Badowski & Marcin Iwinski

I think we will be able to get back up from the unpleasant news and bring up the hype to an even higher level. Episode 5 of Night City Wire is coming up soon and CD Projekt Red is expected to announce the post-launch plans for their game before it is released. I believe the next episode of the live web show is the perfect moment for it.

With this delay I would not be surprised if they fit in an Episode 6 before release.

UPDATE!

Shortly after the announcement on October 27th many angry fans expressed their frustration in a variety of different ways and platforms.

To some extend it is understandable that players would be angry. It’s not very easy to book your days off to play the game freely when it launches around Christmas and the end of the year.

It’s quite amusing and at the same time thought-provoking that the social manager(s) at CD Projekt Red are not “in the loop”, apparently. Which led to confusing and unpleasant situations like these tweets from mere hours before the delay announcement.

The most shocking ones were along the lines of…
