This is a quick guide showing you how to remove the annoying black borders that appear on the left and ride side of the screen during conversations, story cutscenes and vendor screens. This AC Valhalla Ultrawide fix will allow you to enjoy the game the way you should on your screen!
When playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on a ultrawide monitor all of the cinematics, story cutscenes and simple conversations, even when dealing with vendors and traders, will add black vertical borders on the sides. This is true for my case with 21:9 as well as for 32:9.
This is a method I found on Steam for Mafia: Definitive Edition. The same works for Asssassin’s Creed Valhalla (and for Horizon Zero Dawn, by the way).
This simple step-by-step guide will help you get rid of the black bars on Ultrawide! Make sure you read the notes section first!
How to fix Black Bars in AC Valhalla Ultrawide Cutscenes
Instructions
- Download a small program called HxD. This is a hex editor took with an easy to use interface. You can get it from the following link: https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/
- Open HxD. You will see a screen that looks like this one.
- Go to File and click on Open or use shortcut CTRL+O.
- Navigate to the folder where Assassin's Creed is installed and select the ACValhalla.exe file to open it.
- From the Search menu choose "Replace" or use shortcut CTRL+R.
- From the top choose "Hex Values". In the "Search for" field paste exactly this "39 8E E3 3F". In the Replace with field place one of the following, based on your current resolution (I have tested it myself only for 21:9 3440x1440p)
2560x1080 = 26 B4 17 40
3440x1440 = 8E E3 18 40
3840x1600 = 9A 99 19 40
5120x2160 = 26 B4 17 40
6880x2880 = 8E E3 18 40
Choose "All" from the "Search direction" in the right and click on "Replace all" button.
- The result should be 22 values changed. Save the file on top of the original by replacing it.
- Repeat the exact same steps for the "ACValhalla_Plus.exe" file. Don't forget to save it.
Notes
Copy your original exe files before you start this operation. There should be no problems at all, but just to be sure, it wouldn't hurt to have the backups.
I have used this tool to fix the black bars issues for Ultrawide resolutions for Mafia Definitive Edition as well as Horizon Zero Dawn in the past couple of months prior to Assassin's Creed Valhalla's launch.

Depending on when you use this guide, the version of the tool may be different. However the process should be identical always.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla must not be opened while doing this procedure.
Some scenes, specifically related to the main storyline, are prerendered and will always appear with black bars on the sides. They are not too frequent, though and there is nothing that can be done to avoid or fix them.
Please note that the video demo is a part of the main story in England. It doesn't reveal anything interesting or important, but thought I'd warn you.

If you want to fully experience the Discovery Tour, released in October 2021 as an additional gameplay option to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, you can use this guide to remove the black bars from your ultra-wide monitor.
Of course, some of the pre-rendered cinematics, like the very opening one, would remain fixed at 16:9, but the whole gameplay experience after that and all the imagery, explorations and fun time, all of this will be in pure Ultra-Wide mode!
