How to defeat Basim Boss in Assassin's Creed Valhalla

This guide will give you the fight mechanics, tactics and strategy for how to defeat Basim in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. This is one of the most interesting boss fights and involves specific mechanics and moves you have to perform rather than just deplete Basim’s Health!

Who is Basim

Basim is a member of the Hidden Ones organization. You meet him in the very beginning of the game. He joins you on several quests and he also introeduces you to his colleague and student Hytham, who settles in your village Ravensthorpe and has also an important role throughout the story of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Basim Ibn Ishaq is a son of an architect, who constructed the Great Mosque of Samarra, but was exiled and died in poverty with someone else stealing the credit for his creation. Basim visits the great library of Bagdat frequently.

In 870 Basim meets with Sigurd, Eivor’s step-brother. They become friends. It is through Sigurd that you meet Hytham and Basim in the beginning of the game, shortly before you set sail for England.

Basim is a mystery character and doesn’t reveal much of his true ambitions and goals until the very end. Sigurd takes you back to Norway to reveal a secret Temple and what turns out to be a fake Valhalla, in which he wants the two of you to stay forever.

Why you have to fight Basim

In the beginning of the Story Basim believes that Sigurd is the man he needs for his purpose. Near the end after all he has seen and learned, Basim realizes that it was Eivor, who he was looking for.

The events leading up to the Basim boss fight start back in Norway, in Hordafylke. Sigurd takes you to the ancient Temple, where you see the Old Tree. This turns to be an ancient mechanism that somehow teleports you to what turns out to be a fake Valhalla simulation created by that machine.

Eivor realizes that and attempts to get back to the real world, but meets Odin himself at the gate, who refuses to release Eivor.

After a short fight Eivor realizes that he has to drop his Axe in order to escape form Odin’s grasp and makes a run for the gate, where his family awaits and helps him.

Eivor manages to pull out of that machine only to realize that his brother is now being held by Basim, who threatens both of them.

Basim’s ultimate goal is to save his family. The methods he uses are very extreme and you will learn more about them later in the story as it unfolds before you after this boss fight.

Here your fight with Basim begins and it is split into a few separate stages.

How to defeat Basim

The fight happens in a few separate phases in which you have to do different things against or around Basim to beat him. This boss has no Health, so the fight doesn’t end if you just beat him using your weapons and raw power. You need to know what to hit and how to hit in the specific moment to progress and reach the end of the fight and defeat him.

In this fight you will see screenshots of me using Odin’s Spear. It is available for you to pick it up before this fight. To learn how, check my guide on how to get Gungnir. In my first fight against him, I used my favorite Assassin Hybrid Build and it was a bit harder due to the distance factor. Odin’s Spear has a much greater reach than any other melee weapon.

Phase 1: Basim pins you down

In the first phase of the fight Basim will run around you on the upper levels of the platform and leap onto you. You can avoid these leaps and deal damage to him, but it doesn’t seem to matter.

Be mindful of his ranged attacks as well as his smoke bombs. He does that a lot. It seems that the cinematic can only be triggered after you bash him a little and then Basim leaps from above and pins you to the ground.

After Basim pins you down a couple of times, a cinematic will be triggered and you will progress to Phase 2 after it plays out.

Phase 2: Stun Basim

Shortly after the cinematic, Phase 2 begins. The platform you are on begins moving up. During that time it seems that nothing you do to him has an effect. Basim doesn’t perform any special moves during that time either. he may still throw some ranged attacks at you. He may not have a Health bar, but you do. Keep yourself save.

When the platform reaches the top, you can Stun basim. Once he is stunned, approach him and perform a Stun Attack on him. This will progress you to the next phase. My tests show that almost any attack will Stun Basim once the platform stops moving.

Basim drags Sigurd into the conflict, as he himself announces that in the cinematic scene. Basim throws another smoke screen bomb and disappears. A transition phase follows.

Transition: Parkour to Basim

During this phase you have to chase Basim. It’s a linear path, so little to no chance to get lost. There is a lot of parkour involved. While running after him, you may want to pick up any food sources you pass by if you need to replenish your Health.

Phase 3: The final fight

After you reach the platform with the giant machine, a short cinematic plays out in which Sigurd tells Basim that he is an Oathbreaker and has to die here.

Just as Basim attempts to cut Sigurd’s head off, Eivor intervenes with the words “I am your prize, Basim. Come!” . You fight Basim one last time.

To finish the fight all you have to do now is shoot Basim with an arrow into his now glowing left hand. He immediately goes to the ground, ready for the final cinematic and his fate.

Note, you have to hit him in the left hand inside the glowing in white circle on this platform. If you do that outside the circle, the cinematic will not trigger.

Once Basim is on his knee, approach him and perform a Stun Attack.

The cinematic plays out and shows how you hang Basim onto that machine and bring him into the fake world…

What happens to him next, I leave to you to discover by continuing the story.
