How to get Odin’s Spear Gungnir in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has a ton of secrets and treasures to be discovered. None are more precious and interesting than the Legendary gear. One such item is Odin’s Spear called Gungnir.

What is Odin’s Spear Gungnir

The legends tell that Odin’s Spear was made by Dwarves. Loki discovered it while visiting them performing an errand. Using his skills in flattery Loki manages to get the Spear from the Dwarves.

What is so special about Gungnir in AC Valhalla

Like any other weapon, Odin’s Spear Gungnir can only have up to three runes placed in it. From the moment you pull it out of the wall, it is in its final Mythical Tier. You cannot upgrade it any more. You can level up its stats, though – three more times! Its initial stats are as follows:

  • Attack: 92
  • Speed: 48
  • Stun: 101
  • Critical Chance: 94
  • Weigth: 15

The description below the spear’s name reads: “A legendary spear once wielded by Odin himself. It is said that this fine weapon never missed its mark.

This spear is not a “Legendary” tier as you might be misled to believe. There is no higher tier in the game above Mythical (for now). It is called so, because it comes from the Legends, as I explained at the very top of this guide.

What is so special and unique about this weapon is its perk: “The Spear’s reach is extended by a force field”. This is clearly visible not only when you are in combat, but also when the Spear sits on your back. A strange “force field” surrounds it even when it’s not in use.

When can you get Gungnir

To be able to find Odin’s Spear Gungnir, you need to first complete the main story of the game including all story arcs in England.

Sigurd will ask you to return with him to Norway, to the far and cold north, to Hordafylke. I will not reveal the details of the story there, of course. It’s worth experiencing it for yourself.

In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Odin’s Spear, Gungnir, is a very special Legendary weapon.

After you pick up the quest “A Brother’s Keeper” you will be able get the Spear. You do not need to finish the quest first. This quest takes you through the first epilogue of the storyline of the game. You can opt to finish the quest first, focusing on the story and then return to this cave (instructions below) to get the spear.

Note that the Asgard story ark is not required for this. It is not part of the main storyline of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

After a short cinematic, you complete also “A Quiet Homecoming” quest. At this point you are able to once again freely roam all of the game’s world. Time to get Odin’s Spear!

To complete these quests you would need to be Power Level 220 or so. The last region in England before you go back to Norway is for Power Level 250, but it becomes available much earlier. It is up to you to decide when to pledge to it and go do the story arc.

How to get Odin’s Spear Gungnir

To get Odin’s Spear Gungnir, go back to Norway, to Hoirdafylke. This is a Power Level 280 area, but there will be no fighting involved for this trip. So you will be OK if you are a little lower than that.

Odin's Spead Hungnir Map

Note that you can visit the place earlier, but you will not see or be able to pick up Gungnir. This weapon is intended to be obtainable only after you complete the above-mentioned quests from the main storyline of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

As soon as you land on the shores, this is the view you would see. Start climbing the showy cliff.

When you reach the intersection, make a right. You need to get back to the cave where the main quest took you. Take the first left turn as you climb the cliff. It’s the big dark spot on the map (not where the marker is).

Goinnhellir cave in Hordefylke

The entrance to the cave is behind the frozen lake with the three bears.

During the main quest that took you there earlier, you had to break an ice wall. It’s back up. Shoot an arrow to break it up again.

Brak the Ice Wall again

Continue forward. When you get to the crossroads on your right-hand side you will see the door that led you into the Temple during the main quest earlier. It’s not firmly closed. Turn to your right and you will see the glowing light of Odin’s Spear, in the wall beneath the crack.

As you slide through the crack you will be able to use your Focus to look at the spear ahead and above. Eivor will say “A strange find! A spear like Odin’s.” Climb up and take it, it’s yours!

As you approach it, Eivor will ask “Gungnir, is it you?”A short animation will play out when you attempt to pick it up. By the way, this is the very same Spear Odin used in the fight against you earlier during the main quest.

Congratulations! You now wield Odin’s Spear Gungnir!

Builds for the Gungnir Spear

As I have said before in several other AC Valhalla Guides I have made, there is no one ultimate best build in this game. The Spear would fit nicely in a build that prefers Bear Skills and melee combat. It is nicely paired with both a shield and a fast off-hand (dagger).

The weapon itself is a read one (Bear category). This means that any Passive for the Bear equipment you have picked up from the Red Skill Tree (Way of the Bear), will boost this Spear’s performance even further.

Way of the Bear Passive

You can use Gungnir in pretty much any build with your Eivor. In situations where distance is key, this weapon will give you a nice advantage. It takes a while to learn how to play with it, though. It is no ordinary spear. To fully take advantage of its perk (the extra distance), you will need a little bit of time and practice.

Dual-wielding spears would be awesome. If not for performance, for the looks at least. Remember the fight against Draugr Hemming earlier in the story? I’d love to have his two spears…

The sad part is that you would have already completed almost all the game has to offer by the time you can obtain this spear. The EndGame is still ahead of you, though. You surely have a few special bosses to defeat, artifacts and mysteries to discover and powerful Zealots to defeat from the Order of the Ancients. Let’s not forget that there is a whole Season Pass before you with two story expansions and more!
