Guide to the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Legendary Animals locations, tips on how to find and defeat them, what rewards you gain for each hunt!
There are eleven legendary animals in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Each one is found in a specific region in Norway and England. Defeating them will grant you a special trophy from each one, which you can bring to the Hunter’s Hutt in your Settlement for rewards. This guide will tell you everything you need to know about the Legendary Animals in AC Valhalla – locations where to find them, how to defeat them and what you get in return as a reward!

What are Legendary Animals in AC Valhalla
In previous titles of the Assassin’s Creed series you also had a number of Legendary Beasts to hunt down for special trophies, exclusive rewards and Skill Points.
In AC Valhalla it is no different. There are a ten (plus one) Legendary Animals available and discoverable on the maps of Norway and England as “Mysteries”. Before you find their exact location (through exploration or by following this guide), you will see them marked as small light-blue dots on your map.
After you approach them and use your Odin’s Sight to scan the area, the locations will switch their icons to a “paw” and notify you that in this closed arena you will have a Legendary Beast to hunt and defeat.
Why should you hunt the Legendary Animals
Each of the Legendary Animals will grant you +2 Skill Points (no XP, just directly Points). Defeating the beasts will also give you rewards at the Hunter’s Hut in your Settlement.
To get the rewards for each animal’s pelt, you need to first build the Hunter’s Hut in your Settlement. The Hut will be located next to the Longhouse of Ravensthorpe. It becomes available as early as the first expansion of your Settlement.
Check out this detailed guide if you want to learn more of how to expand and upgrade your Settlement in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
On top of the other rewards, you will also have some new decorations appear as interior in your Longhouse. They will be from the slain Legendary Animals, of course.
Where to find and how to defeat the Legendary Animals
The Legendary Animals Locations are marked on your map with a small light-blue dot. When you approach the location, it will turn into a Legendary Animal symbol that looks like a paw.
These are bosses and not recommended for low Power level players. Although you will be able to defeat them at almost any time during your adventures, I suggest you gain at least some of the Skills and Abilities I recommend in the guide below before you try them. Especially if you play the game on higher Combat Difficulty level.
The sections below contain information on where to find the beasts and useful tips and strategies on how to defeat them. If you are missing any of the mentioned Abilities of Skills in your arsenal, you can find detailed instructions on how to get them in this guide: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Skills and Abilities Guide.
Elk of Bloody Peaks
The Elk roams a small flat area called Elgrfors high up in the mountains of Rygjafylke in Norway. You will find it near the pool of a small waterfall.
Here are a few tips and suggestions for your fight against the Elk of Bloody Pieaks:
- The giant animal is extremely violent and will not wait for a special invitation to attack you as soon as it smells, hears or sees you.
- I had best success in my several tests using Brush with Death to avoid its kicks and slow down time. I use this Skill almost anywhere on any opponent, but it’s worth mentioning still.
- The Elk is capable of hitting you from all sides, including kicking with its back legs, using its horns and it also thrashes around like mad.
- Calling a pet for support and as a distraction helps quite a bit. That’s why I would recommend you get the Man’s Best Friend Ability.
- The Elk’s weak spot for ranged attacks is its lungs.
- Poison and Fire deal additional damage over time on the beast and can be of help if you struggle.
Black Shuck
You will find this one among some ruins in the south-east corner of East Anglia.
Check out some of my recommendations for this fight:
- This thing is incredibly fast. It jumps and runs like crazy all the time. But is alone, no adds.
- I didn’t try it, but a dedicated Ranged Build should be very helpful against the Black Shuck. Probably your best option. I dislike Ranged Builds, sadly, so I opted to test it with various melee builds.
- Poison works wonders on this legendary animal. Built it up and leave it do its damage as the animal runs around and you chase it.
- Brush with Death. Again. Yeah.
- If you allow it to start munching on you, bash the LMB or main attack button on your controller to get rid of it quickly.
- because of the munching, I recommend having Grit from the Way of the Wolf Skill Tree.
- If you have Gungnir its extra long range will give you a great advantage.
- Because the animal runs like crazy and doesn’t chase you constantly, use the time it is away to shoot its weak spots then do a Stun Attack for massive damage.
The Corpse Feeders
This challenge tasks you with defeating three wolves. One large grey wolf, one medium black wolf and a little white one. They are in Perie, north-east from Buckingham in Oxenefordescire.
Here are a few tips you might need for fighting Night-Wulf (the mid-sized one), Hwit-Wulf (the small one) and Eald-Wulf (the big one):
- Three versus one is not cool. Use quick mobile build. The wolves are very fast.
- Don’t allow them to move behind your back. Always keep an eye at them.
- Focus on one of the three and take it down first.
- Don’t allow the wolves to eat the corpses, that heals them.
- Avoid getting bitten by the wolves. If one bites you and drags you to the pack, they will heal up off of you.
- Don’t go on the roof of the small building, it’s not save there. The small white wolf is very jumpy.
- Brush with Death and quick double-daggers build might be your best choice hear. Large and slow weapons are not the most effective way against the fast and agile animals.
- Poison Strike with a fast-dual-daggers build would do a lot of damage to the animals.
- The Miasma skill may come in handy if you take my previous advice and use a Poison build.
- Throwing Axe Fury may serve as a crowd control tool during the fight.
- The wolves can’t kick you when you are on their back side. Turn (dance) around them constantly
- Man’s Best Friend Ability may come in handy, to distract at least one or two of the bosses for a short time.
Beast of the Hills
The Beast of the Hills is actually locked up in an ancient Roman ruin underground and… drunk! On the image below Eivor is standing at the entrance to the ruins. The beast is actually underground.
You will find the entrance to the arena a little to the east from the Mystery Marker, at the Uriconium Ruins.
Here are some tips for defeating this bear:
- It’s a rectangular closed arena. The bear is quite large and doesn’t move too quick.
- Don’t allow the beast to drink and heal up.
- Poison Build works great for this boss.
- Stay behind the monster and hit it. Constantly dodge and dance around trying to stay in a safe place behind the bear.
- Hitting its weak spots is worth it for the Stun Attack. As usual, it will take a lot of the boss’ health and has a one cool animation (all Stun Attacks have them and they differ from beast to beast).
- I don’t mention that in the other segments of this guide, but make sure you pick up as many of the +1 Adrenaline Slot Skills from the Skill Tree. This really opens up your front for using Abilities against special and tough opponents. This is a general tip that I also shared in several other guides. Whatever build you go for, pick up the three additional Adrenaline Slots ASAP.
Gemad-Wulf
You will find this big wolf in roman ruins south from Grimsby in Linconlscire.
To beat this legendary animal, you may want to take a few of these suggestions:
- The wolf is very fast, so a slow weapon is not a good choice against it.
- A spear will do well. Gungnir is a great option.
- The boss jumps up on the ruins from time to time and calls for support – progressively rising numbers of normal wolves that join the fight.
- Because of the number of animals you are going to fight in total, Miasma is a fantastic Skill to have from the Raven Skill Tree.
- The wolves are quite fast and it’s not a good idea to use abilities with long animations and “channels”.
- Poison Strike is a great tool for this fight, in combination with the above-mentioned Miasma.
- Fast and agile builds tend to do good against this boss. However, a strong Bear Build with a monster of a weapon like Excalibur would be great for AoE as well. However, you need to be mindful of your Stamina in this case. Of course, any other Great Sword will do just fine, but if I have to name something, I prefer to name the best.
- As usual Brush with Death is a highly recommended Skill.
Aelfred’s Battle-Sow
This giant Sow is Tuicca’s Farm, directly south from Lunden in Suthsexe.
Here are the tips I have for you for this fight:
- Be careful when the Sow runs at you. Its horns attack is very powerful, but easily avoidable – dodge.
- If you use a melee build, a Spear and Brush with Death would be a good choice. As always Gungnir has advantage here, because of the extra long attack range.
- Fire and Poison build up are great way to wear the beast down.
- In the later moments of the fight the Sow gets progressively more aggressive and chaotic.
- The beast can hit you when you are behind it. Dance and twirl around it to avoid as much damage as possible.
- Ranged builds would be fine, but its weak spots are hard to hit from the front, so if you want to use a Stun Attack on the boss, find a way to aim at it from the sides, like when it runs chaotically for example.
- There are other animals around, but they did not participate in the fight at all. Even after I hit and killed one of them. Could be a bug. In case it is a bug and Ubisoft fixes it, I would recommend you pick up Miasma Skill and rely on a Poison build for the fight.
The Blood Swine
This big boar is isolated in a small island with water on all sides and tall grass all around the area. The arena for the Blood Swine Legendary Animal is located in Eurvicscire.
Tips for the fight:
- The area is filled with tall grass with the exception of a small segment on the south-western end of the arena.
- The boar likes to run back and forth, but is not very agile and quick to turn.
- The safest place to be for a melee fight is on the side of the animal. It has a frontal and back-wards attack you need to be careful with.
- For fun: I suggest Poison and lots of it to drain the HP of the beast while it runs like crazy. Blow up a Poison Strike bomb into its face and continue bashing it to add to the Poison effect.
- For quick results: I suggest a solid ranged build with ranged damaging abilities. A Hunter bow like Arc of Elan or the Hunnish Bow.
- The tall grass will prevent you from easily seeing the weak spots of the beast for a ranged attack followed by a Stun Attack, but the dirt it pushes into the air as it runs around the arena, makes it easier to spot.
Bear of the Blue Waters
The Bear is in a small flat island in Hordafylke, Norway.
Here are a few tips and suggestions for your fight against the Bear:
- It’s quite big, but also slow and clumsy.
- The bear has no attack from its back, like the Elk does.
- Susceptible to Fire attacks and Poison.
- Incendiary Powder Trap works nice against it.
- Hitting the bear in the knee-joints will stun it eventually and allow you to do a Stun attack for massive damage.
- Very useful to have Brush with Death ability.
- Long-range melee weapon such as Odin’s Spear or any other spear would do fine.
- Ranged build works great on the bear, it doesn’t move quick.
- There are tons of arrows and berries around the arena if you need them.
Wildcats of the Weald
These two cats are an Elder and A Youngling (family, perhaps?). They are roughing each other up in playful game while waiting for you to find them south-west from Wincestre across the Afon River. You will easily find their location by following the animal carcasses on the way from Wincestre down to the marker.
My tips for the fight:
- Ranged build is not good for this, at least I could not make it work properly, but I am not good with Wolf Builds anyway. Both of these cats are very agile and fast. They also tend to jump you from different sides.
- I managed to do fine with a Poison Strike and with Odin’s Spear in two different attempts while testing for this guide.
- The Elder is a lot more aggressive and dangerous, but the Young one is more mobile and in the later parts of the fight it may jump and eat you alive, literally.
- Try to not allow the cats to touch you. Constant moving, running and dodging is key.
- Grit is a very useful Skill to have for a fight against multiple opponents as it’s easier to get hit while fighting the two cats.
- Using Man’s Best Friend worked great for me. It distracted one of the animals as I working on the other one.
- There are plenty of arrows and berries around the arena. Make good use of them all.
- Try to hit the Weak Spots of both beasts. The massive Stun Attack damage helps a lot in this fight.
- You have to defeat both of the cats to complete the challenge.
Bonus: O Yan Do’ Ne
This moose is in Vinland, the area where you travel without your gear.
How to kill this legendary animal:
- This beast is incredibly aggressive. It runs all the time
- You will need to farm the resources in Vinland to purchase the set of gear available at the merchants.
- I suggest you use the Club in your main hand. It is more effective against this boss.
- The moose will often charge at you with a non-parryable attack in the end, marked with red sparks (glow). Use Brush with Death to slow down time and bash it with the club.
- The moose kicks dirt that disrupts your vision for a brief period of time. To avoid it, stay away from the animal when it starts thrashing around itself.
There is no special reward from the Hunter’s Hut in your Settlement for defeating this beast.
Bonus: Steinnbjorn
This ice bear is in Jotunheim, which is unlocked after you complete the Asgard story arc. To travel to Asgard you need to first build Valka’s Seer Hut to get access to this quest and the new map. After you complete the Asgard story, which shouldn’t take long (an hour tops) you will gain access to Jotunheim. Below is the exact location of Steinnbjorn on the map.
This beast is a Power Level 400, but as with anything else in the game, this is just a recommendation. I defeated this legendary animal at Power Level 305 and had no trouble. Here are some tips:
- The bear is isolated in a circular area. Quite large. The arena, I mean. The bear too.
- This legendary animal is very slow and clumsy, easy to avoid.
- Stay on the back of the beast and push with light and strong attacks.
- Poison build works great.
- Grit is a wonderful Skill to have to allow you to stay in melee, even during the ice waves.
- The bear will project double and later triple circular ice waves around itself. When that happens, either push through it with Poison DoTs and Grit or dodge away. Each wave is wider than the previous. When you see the monster stand on its back legs, this is the signal for the waves coming in.
- The bear will slowly turn around trying to hit and stomp you.
- The boss has a projective attack, where it will create a straight line of ice emanating from the boss’ location and aimed at you. Dodge to avoid it. These always come in three.
- If you are behind the boss, you should be safe from the linear projectile ice attacks, but it happened a few times in my tests that the bear would aim backwards. More likely to be a bug or a collision issue as I was constantly “cornering” the beast next to the wall.
- My first choice, as always, was my favorite Assassin Poison Hybrid build.
- You can do just fine with Gungnir. The reach of Odin’s Spear will allow you to move around the bear a lot easier. It’s much slower than a pair of daggers, though.
- The boss has four weak spots – two on the left and two on the right. Hitting them all will trigger the Stun Attack, which based on your level can deal massive damage or not nearly enough to justify a Bow gameplay if you favor melee (like I do).
- I did not test a Ranged Build in this fight.
There is no reward at the Hunter’s Hut for defeating this beast. You do get your usual +2 Skill Points, of course.
What rewards do you get for the Legendary Animals
Originally I thought that each animal pelt grants you a unique and specific reward. However, thanks to several reports I received, it seems that this is either bugged or the rewards simply are granted to you in a static order, regardless of which animals you defeat and report to the Hunter’s Hut.
I received the Bow on the fourth kill and the Axe was a reward after my eight or ninth kill (not sure, been a while since I did this). The two Bonus Legendary Animals’ pelts may or may not count. I did them last and received no reward for either of them.
Here are the rewards:
