Today Respawn and EA announced not just the continuation of the “Star Wars Jedi Franchise”, but two more new games currently in development!
We’re still in January and 2022 is already looking to be one of the most promising years for Star Wars videogames fans. We don’t have release dates for the titles you are going to read about below, but still…
Once again, Electronic Arts and Lucasfilm are working together to release new Star Wars games. Today, we learned about 3 new games being in development. The next one in the “Star Wars Jedi” series, a new FPS and a Strategy Game.
Respawn is back at it
Respawn Entertainment, a studio that made its reputation by releasing top games like Apex Legends, Titanfall and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, is leading the production of these projects.
Rejoice, a new game in the Star Wars Jedi series. Of the three games, this is the one I’m most excited about. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order delivered an amazing and emotional story, super fun gameplay, tons of exploration, the ability to perfect your combat skills and rewarding you for doing so. If done properly, this one might become a favorite amongst the very demanding Star Wars fans.
“Building on the previous successes of our EA relationship, this new collaboration highlights the trust and mutual respect shared between the world-class teams at EA, Respawn and Lucasfilm Games,” said Sean Shoptaw, SVP, Walt Disney Games.
“We are huge fans of Star Wars here at Respawn and we’re thrilled to work with Lucasfilm Games on new titles that we have wanted to make for years,” said Zampella, group GM and founder of Respawn.
What are the three new upcoming games
So, we’re getting a new action-adventure game, an FPS and a Strategy game. These 3 titles join Star Wars Eclipse, Star Wars Lego: The Skywalker Saga, and Star Wars: Hunters for the brand-new games set to release in the years to come.
There’s also an unnamed Star Wars project from Ubisoft. We have almost no details about it but it’s supposedly an open-world experience and story-driven. It’s probably too early to know anything else.
Also, Star Wars: The Old Republic is getting a new expansion. Legacy of the Sith is set to release on February 15, 2022.
And of course, one of the most acclaimed RPGs, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is getting a remake. We only saw a teaser at Sony’s PlayStation Showcase in September 2021 but everyone got so hyped that a couple of years of waiting are totally fine for most of us.
Love Shooters? How about a new Star Wars FPS
If you’re a Star Wars fan and can’t get your hands on a good shooter then you’re going to be thrilled. Apex Legends has become one of the most played and praised games in the genre.
“Working with Lucasfilm Games on a new FPS in the Star Wars galaxy is a dream come true for me, as this is a story I have always wanted to tell“, said Peter Hirschmann, game director at Respawn.
It is also worth mentioning that Peter was a VP of development at LucasArts and also an executive producer on the original Star Wars Battlefront games. That makes me feel hopeful for this new Star Wars FPS.
We can only expect very nice gameplay, good combat mechanics and some non-traditional ways to defeat your enemies combined with stunning visuals and interesting characters.
Fan of more complex games? How about a new Strategy Star Wars title?
And last but not least, the third title is a Star Wars strategy game. This one is being developed through a collaboration with Bit Reactor. A recently formed studio created by veterans of the industry who worked on titles like Elder Scrolls Online and Civilization.
In this case, we can only speculate about what kind of game it’s going to be. I don’t think it’s a real-time strategy game like Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds as that genre has almost disappeared.
I also doubt they take a similar approach as Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes. At the end of the day knowing the genre tells us almost nothing but after knowing the background of the team behind it, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a new, exciting and very challenging experience.
Whether you like shooters, strategy games, story-driven, RPGs, MMOs, VR, or even Space Combat, Star Wars has a game for you!
The future looks very promising and I can’t wait for everything that will be shown(hopefully) at Stars Celebration in May 2022.
While you wait, grab your blaster, lightsaber, or ship and jump into any of the Star Wars games that are available. It’ll make the wait easier and you’re going to have a blast!
Concluding Thoughts
EA has a bad reputation when it comes to Star Wars video games. Bah, they have bad reputation when it comes to video games. In general.
Yet, two years ago they did something that surprised and amazed many of us – they allowed Respawn Entertainment to create a single-player story-driven action game with some RPG elements. And, boy, was Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order a huge success.
To be honest with you, I am a little worried about Respawn now. It seems to me that EA is putting a huge burden on these guys to deliver more high-quality Star Wars content. Will they hold strong and survive the pressure?
Creating a sequel has its perks. You rest on the success of the predecessor. But it has drawbacks as well. The audience has very high expectations based on you previous great creation and will demand a lot more from the second. It’s just how the world of video games is set.
